View Full Version : Favourite character in the Necroscope books

Dan Greyskull
January 13th, 2004, 08:23 PM
Hey all you Wamphyr fans!!! Now this has most prob been posted b4 on here, if it has, then im sorry! but I thought i'd ask anyway! In the whole Necroscope saga, who is your favourite character of all? Either good or bad! Who takes your fancy? The legendary daddy of necroscope : Harry Keogh? or the first wamphyr Shaitan? the scheming Wratha? or even Harry's son's? Nathan or Nestor?

I cant decide myself! but it would be good on knowing all your thoughts :)

for me it's a tie between the dweller and lady karen. heroes or antiheroes?

Scourge
January 15th, 2004, 09:17 AM
Faethor, he never gave up.
and Canker, because he was bonkers.

On the flipside, the character I hated the most was BJ Mirlu from the lost years. Mah wee man.

Dan Greyskull

Could be any!!!! Heroes or anti-heroes!!

That is a good point about Faether though! - he was the daddy of bad in the Necroscope Saga!

Goth Girl
January 15th, 2004, 04:23 PM
hmmm... I think I'd go with Faethor and Wratha as two of my favourites. Faethor was almost a hero, as he helped Harry kill off other vampires (albeit for his own reasons!).. Wratha was just a babe!

The Dweller is one I like, but would have loved to know more about him.

Canker
January 15th, 2004, 09:12 PM
Canker I loved. but then I loved Radu as well. Must be the Dog-Lord thing grin.gif
Would have been great to know more about the Dweller. Seemed the other Wamphryi knew him pretty good and had a decent fear of him.
Devataki (spelling?) blush.gif
Wratha, Lesk the glut, Dramal Doomsbody, all great characters... hard to decide :(

The Mad American

I tend to lean toward the Dweller and Nathan, something about next generation Necroscopes I guess.

Dan Greyskull
January 16th, 2004, 03:06 PM
Yea...I'd agree in that 'next generation' part! Though - as powerful as the Dweller was (even more than Harry at a point!), we never really got to know him...knew nothing about how the Wamphyr feared him...it does say there were battles...but it would have been good to know more about them and his life when he had his powers(could we hope of a Dweller book?!?!? in the Wamphyr world where some of our fav characters still lived like the lady Karen!...even see more of Lesk the glut!??!!?). But Nathan's a great story - we feel for him in blood-brothers - he thinks he's lost everything in that first raid but, in time, grows strong and very powerful. Like how we see Harry's powers growing through the first Necroscope books - only with Nathan - he's in the world full of Wamphyr! .....and as much as I love a villan (hey - we all do!) ...Nathan would be my Fav. character in the whole series...but its very close between alot others....!!!!!!!!!!

This is a difficult one as there are so many...but if I had to pick one (and I don't) I suppose it would have to .......ahhh I don't know....Dragosani...Faethor...Harry....No I can't pick one, So I'm going to pick a book, I know it's cheating but I don't care:) Necroscope because it's the one that got me hooked on Brians work and the Wamphyri.

Faethors the daddy. I love the way he double crosses everybody. He is also, via Harry, the literal father of all Vampires. I think he would of wreaked some serious damage to vampire and human if he was a starside lord. He's the real brain over brawn character.

BTW has anyone read the Psychomech Trilogy?

Lady Vee, you'll find most people around here have read psychomech, and it can be discussed at length in Other Novels / Short Stories (http://www.brianlumley.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=1). There might not have been a thread about it for a while, but there's no harm in starting one and I am sure there are others who haven't discussed it for a while if ever ;)

My favourite character, hmmm, Thibor or Zek

My fave has got to be Harry, cos of his warmth.
I quite liked Nathan as well, but I didn't feel the love for him that I did for Harry, plus i couldn't stop thinking why didn't Nathan talk to the Dweller.
I would have liked to get to know the Dweller better as well

My favorite ever since I read it, Has to be Radu, why because I loved, His finishing move to Fransico(I know I didn't spell that right).

My other favorite was Nester only friend and ally, Canker. But that's because I was more into werewolves long before I ever heard of Brian Lumley. But Ann Rices books on vampires never gave me the kick that I was use to. But Brian Lumley is a very good writer. I own all but 3 of the necro saga now. But Here in colorado, it's alittle harder to find fastasy books outside of a libery, without ordering them online.

Anyway, back on subtect. Radu is my favorite most because of his finish move(I guess is what you can call it). Canker because he's more like me, then any other character I have found in his books. Meaning Loves music, and is far weird then most of his kind.

That's a pretty strange picture you've painted of yourself there Arkatin, likening yourself to Canker, I'm sure you'll fit in nicely here!

Back to topic - I still can't decide!

Of course this one's difficult for there are so many amazing characters. But if I had to narrow it down.........I'd have to go with Faethor. Mostly because of unrelenting will to continue in some way. Also he's one of few to make Harry keep his guard up even after death.

For the hero, I would have to say Nathan. He was full vulnerability, naive as hell, but powerful in the end.
For the villian, it would have to be Radu Lykan, due to the cohones he showed as an ascending lord and the way he dispatched of Francesco Ferenzcy.

I'm new here and to Necroscope. But Faethor, by far is my favorite. He took a horrible situation and turned it to his favor by will alone and continued to struggle to the very end. Personally I would have been crying like a baby.

Let's see, my favorite Necroscope/Vampire World/E-Branch characters.

I loved Darcy Clark, Ben Trask and of course Harry but who doesn't love Harry?

Favorite Wamphyri of all was Canker though. I just loved his 'crazy like a fox' madness.

I also grew quite attached to Nathan by the end of the Vampire World trilogy.

Still not sure if I like Jake Cutter or not. I think I'm due for a reread of the E-Branch Trilogy. Maybe after NaNoWriMo I'll have time for it. =)

It appears I am the only one who sees it this way. But my favorite character in all the books is none other than Lardis Lidesci. He is so strong, and other than having some "seer's blood" he is only Human... or Szgany rather. He is smart, quick, and never forgets. And even through his intense hatred of all things Vampire, he sees the possibilities for the future in the end.

He is a Survivor. And thus, he is the greatest.

It seems I've neglected this thread, and most of the others, so I thought i'd leave my mark.
Strange as it might sound the charecter I felt the most affinity for was Jake Cutter, he lacked the innocence and warmth of the other Necroscopes and seemed to walk a wonderfully grey line between good and evil.

I agree I think Jake is my fav also he is raw edged and believes in street justice but also has that deep human side full of emotion that he tries not to let surface but just cant keep it beat down

I would have liked to know more about the Dweller also, maybe everyone together could talk Brian into doing a "Dweller - The Lost Years Saga" ??? Would be neat to see how he built The Garden, and where all he had been before he and his mother ended up on Sunside/Starside!!!

This may be boring...but good ole' Harry Keogh. His character is so amazing...I love following him through all of his innocence in Necroscope, then watching him turn into this godly Wamphyri! And his "beliefs" I've always loved, one being "eye for an eye." And! His main drive was always love. Be it his love for Brenda all the way to Lady Karen, or even the dead (not literally love them.)

Of course I liked Harry, but I'm sure just about everyone likes Harry. He's the hero after all. Okay and the fact that he was spying on his teachers and all. That's when I decided I liked him. And I hold a particular fondness for Dragosani(I'd have to I stole his name didn't I?), he's what addicted me to the books in the first place. Watching him in the first chapter tear a body apart was kind of fun and it was one of those things where I would have wanted to be there to see it, you know just to see what the inside of the human body actually looks like up close and everything. Not because I'm sick or anything like that. But I can't say they're my favorites. I think the one single character I loved the most in all the books were Vavara and Nana Kiklu becuase they're tenactios and go for what they want. I mean Vavara took over a nunery and converted them to being completely on the oppostite side of their faith. And as for Nana she wanted children and she wanted Harry and she'd have been damned before letting anything get in here way. It's rather a shame Harry didn't find out about his sons, but then Nana wouldn't have wanted him to know either, I don't think. I liked that she made her choices and stuck by them come hell, hight water, or other people's critism.

A question asked and answered in the wrong place and re-WHAMPed in the right place… hey Tops, did I find the right place this time?? blush.gif

MMMMM... my fave outta the Necro sagas... the Keoghs (Harry then Nathan on that count for all the reasons stated so far)?

My most fave E-Branch operative would have to be Darcy Clarke... he was such a dude, I always felt sorry for him when Harry turned off his talent.... but I was so jackked off with him for his actions in the lost years, turns out b4 (but after lol) Harry did it to him, it made a nice twist for me. Trevor Jordan with an honerable mention.

Fave Russian branch is definatly Zek... then to be teamed up with Jazz ... perfection in a couple eh?

Villians, I think Dragosani has that hands down, but BJ was.. ummm nasty..umm loving. Well she’s the biggest villan in my eyes ‘cause she messed up Harry the most, I think.

Canker would have to be my fave Whamphyri... ahhh sweet is so not the right word. Harry as Whamphyri... god imagen if he submitted to his leach. Wratha the risen was also a most formidable Lady... hell hath no fury like a Lady scorned. The last Drakul what a nasty one too.

Angelo played the best protoplasmic flesh part lol

… so tru about Harry Jnr, I’m dying to know him better!! Maybe a ‘Where he was lost years’…

Frost D nice call on Lardis… he is truly one of the immortal humans of the story along with Nana (thanks jade) I'd say they would have to be the most strongest of any humanity that survives within the saga

I'd go with the popular recognition of Faethor. He's "negotiations" with Harry well brilliant to read, the old dog just kept on pushing and prodding looking for every advantage he could gather even long lost to beyond dust.

Yet he still accepted his destruction at the time with a kind of pathos that was entirely unseen by any of the other Whampyri. And well he did fall in love to at least some extent.

He above all the other vamps, seemed to show no effort in being a fiend, he didn't go out of his way to be a monster. He was fiendish no doubt but not in the revelling way that the starside Whampyri and thibor were. His evil was more natural and concievable then theres.

Azazel005
April 18th, 2005, 06:50 AM
Darcy was a great character, I think his death was the saddest in the books for mine.

On top of having a really intriguing "power", one that really kept you wondering constantly how much protection it would afford him how far exactly could he push it, he also had a really strong sense of doing the right thing.

I'd have loved to see his power pushed further, how far would he be able to ignore his gut instincts, the need to get the hell out before the power seemingly had to make minor miracles happen to keep him in the game.

Of course by the end of the fifth book the description "possibly the words most non-descript man" started to grate a little....[ tongue.gif ]

Faethor was by far my favourite Wamphyrii. He was so scheming and so smooth. His recollection of his rampaging across Europe during the crusades helped endear him to my slightly darker side.

On the other side, always had a soft spot for Lardis and Darcy.

Kalixt Shawxo

Favorite Hero... has to be without a doubt.....

(insert drumroll here)

Lardis Lidesci!

Look at all he had been through, the loss of his family, protecting his clan of Szgany, never letting ANY threat go...and always being prepared to fight the Wamphyri! As a man, he was feared and respected by many a Lord and Lady who went up against him... if they admitted it or not.

Favorite Villian... way too many I really did like, but I think Canker edges out ahead by a nose. The way that the "dog" part of him I think affected the Vampire in him, He seemed to have characteristics that others did not.. loyalty for one. Had he not been insane, he might have actually evolved into a Vampire who did NOT possess all the evil of the Wamphyi.

Hmm, shades of the Dweller, who while being a Vampire because of an infected Wolf, he controlled his Vampirism...I think not only because of his great mental capacity, but from the Wolf in him as well. I now have to throw my hat in the ring of people who want more info about the Dweller.

I like villains more than heroeses, maybe because I am so evil and twisted?

Feathor rocks, but why nobody mentioned Devetaki, she was evil, cunning and had style. I love how she defeated Turkuv Tzonov. She would have Nathan too, but he cheated.

Harry Keogh favourite human\good guy hands down.

Ah, but so much harder to choose a fav Wamphyri. After much deliberation I have to go with the old devil Faethor. So evil, so cunning, so... Wamphyri! I would love to know more about Faethors life. Also loved Thibor, Shaithis, Nestor and Canker, well loved them all really.

If not Harry, it would have to be one of the Wamphyri (I think I still like Faethor the most, but its ever changing). I'm a bad guy type of guy.

I don't think I can spike it down to just one...

-Obviously, Harry is in the list.
-Faethor is, too. The story he tells Harry about his "final" death during the air raid stands out among the great sidebars in the series. So does the final confrontation between him and Thibor. His tenacity and cunning is second only (if even then) to Shaithis. Also, let's not forget that he's the only one who manages to really best Harry by infecting him.
-Always had a soft spot for Jazz, too. Just a good all-'round character..
-F. Mobius...pivotal character, however short a time he was "on-screen". No more time than was spent with him, he stands out as a fully developed character in my mind.
-Max Batu. Not sure why, but I always liked him. Something about a bad guy who meets a bad end that makes you feel sorry for him...touching. He had a lot depth.
-Lardis, obviously.

Oddly enough, for my fav Wamphyri, I was gonna say Fess Ferenc (cos he's freakin' massive!!!) then I just thought, Bugger, Shaitan ate his head... So, Shaitan it is! - He is the first after all.

The heros are harder for me, Darcy for his Guardian Angel, Trask because he can't abide lies and/or liars - for which I sympathise, Goodly for knowing what's coming and when!, Chung, because he's probably never lost his car keys! and all the telepaths the branch has had and probably will have. And that's not even counting Harry and Nathan.

But think about this. Would you really I mean REALLY want ANY of those abillities if the dangers came hand in hand with them?, I for one could get by without them - I've done all right so far ;)

Fave character has to be without a shadow of a doubt - Lardis. He has a no bullsh*t, kick ass, no nonsense string em up attitude - Top geezer! As for Wamphyri Favourites - I keep having recurring dreams of Shaithar the Hagridden!!!! Sounds fantastic - But the one who takes the (dog)biscuit as far as they are concerned has to be Canker. Completely Barking Mad! -

Well not really got a fave cos they're all brilliant but I think for me Darcy was definately one of the best and I literally swore at Harry and the book when he locked-up Darcy's talent as I could see what was going to happen. I hated Harry at that moment but forgave him again by the end.

There are so many wonderful characters though that I really can't just select a single one but that was the most moving part in the Necroscope series for me.

That's the best thing about Brians books, it's hard to choose a favourite, I'd have to say Harry for my choice but mainly because he was 'born' down the road from me. The rest of the characters, even the nasty ones, are very charismatic and likeable even with their faults.

Whoa.....what a task! Harry, yes......I hated to see him die. But as far as E-Branch goes, Darcy without a doubt. But as a collective they were so interesting! They were all great. As for Wamphyri - I really got a kick out of Canker and I thought Lady Karen was classic.

Not many REAL dislikes except BJ Mirlu. That "wee" thing bit about drove me nuts! There may be some hope for Scott St. John, but he just didn't grab me like the other Necroscopes.

I hope notice is taken about the interest in The Dweller, because I found him fascinating. There's a whole hunk missing in that saga - which hopefully is being saved for a future series??

Sorry I have to disagree about BJ yes the wee thing was a little irritating but that woman was insane every time harry did something she did not like she would just hypnotise him again I really felt for the poor bloke.

Feathor has got to be one of my favourites. Dragosani too.
As for good guys I like Sir Keenan and Darcy, and Harry obviously.

Since I have only been through the first five books. I need to say Harry Koegh was my favorite and not having him in Blood Brothers kinda made it disappointing.

Is Harry in any other books other than the first five books?

On this page you can find all the book covers and blurbs. That may be a little help :D

But of course you'll meet Harry again. But how and when? You'll see

One of my favorite characters in the Necroscope saga is the ancient grandfather of all werewolves, Radu Lykan.

I wanted him to (un)live on, and on, and on...

Of the good guys, Harry (of course) and Nathan were my favorites. More Nathan than Harry, though because I felt Nathan was far more compelling. Of the bad guys, Nestor and Wrathra. They're lust/romance took the cake for me!

Man, Lesk The Glut is the most memorable for me, any twisted soul mad enough to take on his own warrior, after commanding it to fight him to the death, is a frigging legend.
I've always thought a few short stories based on some of the lesser mentioned characters, particularly Wamphyri, would be great. A story or two on the exploits of Lesk, would be, well, awesome.
