One book out of all thirteen Necroscope books.
No runners-up or draws. Which one's the best and why?

Wamphyri... cos I liked Yulian!

November 9th, 2001, 03:43 AM
I would have to say for me it was Bloodwars. All those different Wamphryi Lords and Ladies... the ruthless bloodletting.... the survival of the Travelers during such a dangerous time. The struggle between Nestor and Nathan and the eventual settling of it.
The book is priceless! :D

Blood Brothers
Feel the slobbering weighty power of that black volume in your hands! We get to explore a new world, delve into wamphyri history and closely follow a burgeoning necroscope. It's the essence of the thirology which is a word I just made up to describe a thirteen volume novel. The battle in Deadspawn began and concluded too quickly. The Vampire World books are a war story -- 3000 pages of battle and 'romance'. Plus Vasagi and Canker! It's a wodge of brillness so good there's two more after it. And the paper is less chewy and doesn't stick to your teeth as much as the other books.

for without the first book there would be no further ones....

Ok then... I'll have to say Blood Brothers as that was the start of the best part of the series! Those three books sunk the hook in so deep that like a leech it is a part of me! :)

No question for me - Deadspawn
Does that weighty tome feel like a tombstone? It certainly signalled a death - or maybe - a change !
It was the end of an era.
We see the Necroscope at the mercy of himself - his magnified emotions. That's a powerful thing.
As Harry's unwelcome tenant begins to exert it's influence on him, do you hear yourself
willing Harry on? What? Not even with Paxton, at the end ? Of course you do !
This book is my favourite, because it is (was) the culmination of the Necroscope saga - it was the end that no-one really expected.
And that tag line from the cover 'Even the Dead are screaming now...'

It would have to be NECROSCOPE as it was when i first met Harry Keogh, Boris Dragosani and the Wamphyri. (i started off liking Dragosani more than Harry but that soon changed :D ) Brings back alot of good memories that surround reading it too. smile.gif
Its really hard to judge the books because they kept getting bigger and better. But this is my favourite.

The Source, it brought the wamphyri to life where in the first 2 there were mere echoes and memories of the thing in the ground.. but the souce brought all there passions into the now..if only it went into more details on the lords of that day i like the sound of lascula longtooth is it can't quite remember. sorry for the change in topic but my favorite series was the vamp world series..the lords and ladies from turgoshiem were kick ass but they wouldn't of stood a chance against any of the original wamphyri, who terrorised the lidesci's..

Hard to choose, but would have to go with The Source... 'cos it was the pivotel story in the whole series - going in depth into the history of the Wamphyri and the Vampire World. A Classic

I am going to have to say Bloodwars. Love all the lords and ladies and all the fighting...
But I do also have a lot of sentimental value attached to The Source as I found it at a used book sale and that was the first of Mr. Lumleys books I read. Hooked me for good.

I did read Necroscope in Order, and like DC agree that if the first wasn't up to it I would of read no further. But I did, and scoured the shelves for the next installment, then, Bang! the Source. Wow!!! What a concept. I'd always loved Lord of the Rings when the Nazgul were around and here was a book full of vampire nazgul. That's where the camparisons stopped, as these weren't just wraith things but fully fleshed beings, with individual characters. Was it my favourite Necroscope though?
Deadspawn was my favourite. Harry although vampire seemed much more vulnerable in this book. It engaged me emotionally much more. I couldn't wait for Harry the vampire to face the Necromancer, Johnny Found. He has been the most evil character in the whole series. it's Deadspawn for me.
Canis the Grey
February 19th, 2004, 06:36 PM
I'm torn, Necroscope I loved because it takes you through the maturation of the phenom, Harry. However, The Source did such a great job of introducing the Vampire World, it instantly jumps to the top. So my decision is ......
The Source!
By the way, it's my first post and I am excited to be here.

Hummmm.....this is such a hard question!
But here we go...My fav book of Necroscope would prob be 'The Source' it was a totally new thing that I hadnt expect....being introduced to the world of Sunside/Starside along with all new characters, good and bad! That book is deff a spark in the works of the books anyway!
BUT....ive just finished re-reading the Vampire world books...and WOW!!!!! I forgot how brill they all are...so for me, its a close one between 'The Source' and the final book in the vampire world 'Blood Wars' I cant decide! they're all great!
One word : breathtaking.

I think I've just melted my brain trying to do this! I choose one, the think of another and then another! I'm going to go with my first instinct and say The Last Aerie, although I agree with every choice everyone else has made so far!
I think it was the one that I found the most difficult to put down (I found them all difficult to put down) because you got the family thing and both worlds going on at the same time, there was just so much going on but it wasn't confusing.

I didn't reply to this topic when it was first on, as I needed to think about this one...
I think it's Deadspawn that's mine. I just love it when Harry turns into a Wamphyri, and the ending and the fact you get to read about sunside/starside and Earth all in one book.
I think my second choices were The Source and The last Aerie, maybe even the lost year books and the final ever Necroscope book Avengers (or maybe not the final ever???)
Brain Melt...
But yeah... DeadSpawn, that's the one I'm going for as the number 1!

As I said in favorite character's. Best book is Lost Year's Volume 2. Because of all the book in necro saga, Radu had the best kill.. Breaking all your bones, then getting tossed into 600 year old piss. Now that is just wrong, but it's a best part of all the books. If I had to choose a second, I'd have to say Dragonasi(Sorry, it's 4am here, and my daughter is asleep, I can't go looking for my books to find proper spelling right now). His kill at begin of Book 1 is second, because it's very detailed, make it seem like you where the one doing the cutting. and not just another reader..
That's the main reason I like Brian Lumley over ann rice any day. Ann rice doesn't get me into the book like Lumley does.

... (pressed button by mistake) . I have read the first 8, I will say Necroscope because the end gave me a particularly massive buzz that made me start the second one straight away (I had it on the shelf) - I wanted to read them all - this feeling has continued.
And after reading the 3 awesome vampire world books and thinking back to Necroscope, it seems far away, dark and special!

The Source.........I would have to say. Mostly because after I had already become dazzled by the story of the Necroscope & the Whamphyri, it introduced a world of Whamphyri. And that blew me away.

Out of all thirteen what was my favorite?
I have to go with Blood Brothers because it was the start of my love with Nathan and went back to Starside/Sunside which I absolutely love.
Though now I'm having second thoughts as The Source is hitting me over the head. Hmm ...

A few people have said it, but...The Last Aerie.
It just has so much of everything in it that make Brian's books as magnetic as they are. I just couldnt put this one down, moreso than the others, there were interesting and varied Wamphyri, the tension throughout, Nestor and Canker, the whole plot was just incredibly...Lumley!
Gotta be the best, but its always been as close as the pages are. Honourable mentions are Deadspeak, Defilers, and of course the original, which incedently ive read the most (3) and am planning on reading again soon ;)

How do you choose one from thirteen ? Tricky but the source was my 1st Lumley encounter as an impressionable teenager and it sticks as my personal favourite, Shaithis has to be the the baddest yet coolest lord ever. p.s how is it pronounced ? i;e Shaythis . . Shythis ? been wondering for years
Dave Black
July 12th, 2005, 07:18 PM
while Im rambling about correct pronunciation how about Wamphyri ? Wam fire ee . . Wam fir eye, save me from my madness
Gajita
July 12th, 2005, 07:37 PM
I pronounce Shaithis as "Shy-Th-Iss" and Wamphyri as "Vam-Fear-Ee". Though i expect the only one with 100% on this would be Mr.Lumley himself!
sdkdmd
July 12th, 2005, 09:28 PM
Gajita is right with vam-fear-ee
that is how Brian pronounces it click here (http://www.brianlumley.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=000159#000000)

I like the storyline of Deadspawn best, but Necroscope is THE favorite book.
Thankfully, when (prolly the source) I first noticed the books, I read the Necroscope first instead of one of the others. I've accidentally read the 2 or 3 book in a series and gotten totally confused before, so it was nice to start at the beginning for once.

I feel like I'm betraying all the other books just picking one. But I'll say Wamphyri! just because it was the first one I read. I remember how I just couldn't put it down. The whole new spin on vampires had me so excited. And once I'd started there were no other vampires in my mind. The Wamphyri were it, and I've never looked back since. I suppose if I had have read any other of the necroscope books first that would be my fav. But it was Wamphyri! and so Wamphyri! will always be incredibly dear to my heart. Loved Thibors story, too.

I like to to think of it as one book released over a course of years. I can't take one without the others...it's like picking a single chapter out of a book. One means nothing without the rest.
I vote for a fictitious ~10,000 page single volume called "The Life and Times of Harry Keogh: Necroscope"

For me it has to be The Source.
Groundbreaking though Necroscope was, The Source aced it IMO by introducing some supberb off-the-hook concepts and characters.
It's a masterpiece of brilliant imagination and an excellent example of 'out of the box' thinking as horror/sci fi writing goes.
Whilst the Vampire World books come a close conjoined 2nd, I hold up The Source as not only my favourite Lumley book, but the most precious item in my library.

My vote would be for 'Neroscope' being the best. Brian laid a very strong foundation for what has become one of the best series of books ever! Being an avid Fantasy reader, it made a refreshing change to visit another genre which is written with such a complex and convincing history backing the story that I almost believed it could be true! BL has created a masterpiece.
Source would be a close runner up in my opinion, as others have mentioned, it's the first time we visit 'homeworld' and experience literally yet another dimension! fantastic!

I wasn't going to reply to this on principal, but I've caved.
But first, a little story.
I came across the Necroscope books in a book store on my way to college one day, I read the back, thought it was interesting, and bought it. I finished within a week (I swear, that's quick for me!) not long after finishing the first one, I was pickin up the second. I went through the whole series like this... (who else almost cried when they finished them?) Anyway, my favourite and why?
It has to be Necroscope. Why?, because I'd thrown myself under a bus without these books. So thank you VERY much Mr Lumley

I too would have to say "Necroscope". Because it was the first, and what really got me into reading. I was never big on reading, but ya go into one bookstore after a few, and see the great artwork, read the back, and next thing ya know...bam....you're hooked.

Maybe I'm in a minority here but ................
It has to be Blood Brothers for me. The vastness of the book (actually, all 3 in this series) and the plots within plots. And of course, Canker, Wratha, Vasagi et al!! Brilliantly mindblowing literature. Thank you Mr L. grin.gif
