Eric von darkmoor
March 13th, 2001, 04:42 PM
I dont think this threads been done before. But to promote the usage of the old grey matter, im setting this up.

If the necroscope series was to be made into a film, who would you cast for the roles?

if we deal with the first book only and see how this goes we can expand the thread into the other parts of the 13.

a few ideas for the main characters. excuse my spelling as i dont have the books near me at the moment.

dragonsoni (necromancer)
harry as a child
harry grown up
harrys ghostly mother
brenda
thibor the wallach
thibor frecenzy
faethor frecenzy
max batu

anyone want to start this off?

I would cast Gary Oldman as Dragosani.
I know he played Drac, but he plays the evil part really well, i also pictured him as Dragosani when i read Necroscope.

Her looks would work but you think she could be nasty enough? The image doesn't seem to fit...

How about Cameron Diaz...with a wig? She wears wigs well and she's got the same full mouth. And she can be nasty!! :D

Or whatsername from Thelma and Louise...the redhead? She can be nasty too. :D

Little Harry- The kid off of Jerry Mcquire
Faethor- Gary Oldman
Sir Keenan Gromley- Sean Connery
Vicktor Shuskin?-Bob Hoskins
Dragosani-Nicholas Cage
Thibor-Clancy Brown

Harry's Ma-Bonnie Bedelia
It's a start maybe?

I would cast Anthony Hopkins as a corpse.
The only problem I have with a Necroscope film is the fact that much of the book would be gutted. The film, I fear, would only have the title of the original work(and character names) in common. Remember "Interview with a Vampire"?

In film, most of the time, product rules over quality.

Hey he, ressurect that thread!! ;)

Lady Karen - Nicole Kidman redface.gif
Dragosani- Ray Park (Darth Maul)
Thibor - Liam Neeson

Harry - Corey Haim (Is he still around?)

Nicole Kidman????!!! Corey Haims???!!!

How about Heather Graham as Lady Karen?
Overall tall redhead Nicole might pass as a weak Lady Devetaki but not Lady Karen. *L*

Has anyone suggested who might play as Shaitan or Shaithas? Might have spelled that wrong

COREY HAIM????????????????

Storm
August 14th, 2001, 05:32 PM
How about Zek Foener maybe?

Canker, I forgot Tyler Mane was a wrestler, but it brought to mind another wrestler called Triple H, don't know if anoyone's seen him, but he'd make a pretty good Thibor me thinks.

Canker
August 14th, 2001, 05:56 PM
I've never seen Triple H but I have heard of him. I'm not a wrestling fan myself. ;)

Famke Jannsen?..... Hmmmmmm She is a hotty isn't she. :D But I thought Zek was a blonde?

She is a very tall girl and would make a good Wamphryi of some sort....Sheilar?, Ursula?, Devetaki?......I'd fit her in somewhere...but that's the dog in me. :D :D

Finally able to post!

You guys and girls have some great picks! Here are my picks. Please keep in mind, some of my picks are based simply on envisioning a character and not necessarily trying to match words to image. Bear with me, your input in appreciated.

Harry Keogh: Johnny Depp or Giles (from Buffy TV show)
Jake Cutter: Hugh Jackman
Liz: Kate Beckinsale (from Underworld and Van Helsing)
Canker Canison would need to be fully CGI.
Ben Trask: Brian Cox (Stryker from X Men 2)
Gustav Turchin: Nigel Bennett (google the name and watch La Femme Nikita: The Series, he plays a great Russian spy)
Bonnie Jean Mirlu: Natascha McElhone (Diedre, from the movie Ronin starring Robert DeNiro)
Shaitan: The head vampire dude from the movie John Carpenter's Vampires, he's got the look, handsome, evil, drinks blood, etc... ;p

What do you think so far?

Hugh Jackman and Johnny Depp get my vote... throw in Vin Diesel as a Wamphyri Lord (any Wamphyri!) and I'm in paradise!

But please, not Kate Beckinsale... while I would love to see some British talent in the film, KB has done too many of the same roles recently.

I think Anthony Stewart Head (Giles) might be a little old for Harry, even as the Alec Kyle Harry.

But I don't have any better suggestions... film and TV stars never seem to quite match up to my mental pictures!

I just hope that the casting stays true to the character descriptions in the book, unlike Interview with the Vampire... Armand went from being a young fresh-faced auburn-haired teenager into Antonio Banderas (neither young, fresh-faced or indeed auburn!)

Hubris
January 11th, 2005, 06:38 PM
I always picture someone more dark and exotic for BJ Mirlu. More like Thandie Newton, I think she would do nicely. And Harry and Alec Kyle would both have to be done by people I've never seen before(or very few times) to convince me.

topol_sheap
January 11th, 2005, 08:45 PM
I want to see Ed Norton in there somewhere... that would be good.

and while we're at it how about Ricky Gervais as Harry... he's a bit old and a bit fat, but he might work as Alec Kyle... of course I could just be messing with you all!

Now I'm waiting for the flames...

My take on Casting of Necroscope....

Gregor Borrowitz - Rade Serbedzija- boris the blade in snatch Who can disagree if you know of whom i speak?

Harry Keough - someone unkown since he's only going to be in one of the movies. Doughy eyes and almost a pushover until he cast a cold glare.

Alec Kyle - <-------Most Important Character to Cast Because of YOU KNOW WHAT!!!!! He's the guy we should be worried about being casted properly. He needs to be hansome but slightly overwieght, he needs to be likable but imperfect. So what should Johnny Depp or Collin Farrel be Alec. NO!!!! Big Names are overrated. A story loses its depth to mass of such actors. Ask Archimedes........

Boris Dragasoni- Cillian Murphy- jim from 28 days later Young with slippery eyes. Thats whats needed for Boooorrrrrrrissss.......

Thibor - This one i'm goin' with a personal favorite more than what's right.....Hey, I'm entitled to it people can argue Peter "big budget" Jackson should direct.....heh heh...

Ron Pearlman, for a big guy he can act. Most importantly he can be fatherly and cruel. I'm not speaking of that hellboy nonsense but of most of the films i've seen him in. Since he'd be narrating alot of Vamphyri his voice would be most excellent.

Malinari
January 22nd, 2005, 10:49 PM
Right then, I'm only gonna go on about who should play the Harry's. The kid from the 6th sense would be good for Harry Keogh as a child but the 6th sense kid probably isn't so small anymore tongue.gif He'd be good to play the pre-Alec Kyle 21 year old Harry. I also agree that Jhonny Depp should play Harry-Kyle 'cos he has dark brown eyes... well he did in Pirates of the Caribbean. Oh yeah, Cameron Diaz for Zek as well.

Hi! I like all the suggestions, but Gary Oldman is Dragosani. What about Stuart Townsen (? Lestat in Queen of the Damned) for something. He's so seductive and beautiful. I think Christopher Walken should be in there, too, if he could loose the NY accent.

I personally can live without a movie. An weekly hour long tv drama series would be more appropriate than anything. I am an american and I have to say that most headline actors are'nt good enough for Mr. Lumley's characters. The only actor i'll stick by that I listed is....

its not easy picking a cast for the film ,and we all got different views how each should look .....sometimes you see a film and think hey i know someone else who would have played that role better

but i do think it has to have a lot of british influence for obvious reasons, and would rather the british film industry was making the film instead of hollywood, but alas it doesnt have the huge resources hollywood can throw, and this film is going to take some special effects to rival anything that has gone before it .

the big test is how the wamphyri are going to to be done effects wise without it looking like raw head rex ,a story about a mythical monster by the writer clive barker which was ruined effects wise,
and which clive barker was excluded from any input how the monster would look.jus hope that brian isnt pushed out like he was ,and has a lot to say and have has much close contact with director and special effect teams alike as possible,

have been re-reading the series and i think it's already been mentioned but i can really picture the guy from queen of the damned as Dragosani. Even imagined a poster of him looking all evil with 'Necromancer' underneath and some non-descript guy as Harry with 'Necroscope' and some sort of tagline like 'Who will win'.
And there's gotta be a way to fit Bruce 'the chin' Campbell in as well! ;)

Vincent Perez or Stuart T? Cause now that you mention it, VP would be an EXCELLENT Dragosani. Stuart is too 'meh' if you ask me.

March 14th, 2005, 01:55 AM
I've only seen Townsend as Lestat and I don't even think that Lestat is on the same level as Dragosani. I can't see him switchin from portraying Lestat's pretty boy vampire who in comparison to Dragosani is like a little bully just playing at being evil to becoming Dragosani who actually is the real thing. I could be understimating the actor though. I do tend to live in a book.

Wicked Gypsy
April 9th, 2005, 04:20 AM
I think Marton Csokos would make a GREAT Dragosani, He played the terrorist Leader of "Anarchy 99" in XXX. He's a great actor for the part. Gormley should be played by Sir Ian McKellan, Ewan McGregor as Alec Kyle, And Orlando Bloom as Harry. This would make a Fantastic nucleus for the cast.

TheGardenGnome
April 19th, 2005, 05:47 PM
Ed Norton as the older harry would be excellent IMHO. He has great range and is an under rated actor. Unfortunately since Harry becomes Kyle, Ed doesn't fit my mind's eye of Kyle. So he wouldn't last past the first movie which is a shame. As to who would play Kyle, that's a tough one.
One thing is for sure, Brian has to make some sort of walk-on role in the movie. If not, we'll be greatly disappointed!!!!!

hiya I'm a long time Lumlian, but brand-spanking new to the boards. And I'm psych'd about the movie, granted that they keep it true to the book as possible. I guess my dream team for the Necroscope book movies would be:

Faethor: Donald Sutherland
Thibor: Kiefer Sutherland
Alec Kyle: Sam Niel (Played Alan Grant in Jurassic Park)
Big Harry: Jonny Lee Miller (played Dade Murphy in Hackers)
Little Harry: Haley Jole Osmund
Dragosani:
Juilian Bodescu: Jonny Depp
Ben Trask: Anthony Stewart Head
Darcy Clarke: Alan Tudyk (Wat in A Knights Tale)
Lady Karen: Angelina Jolie
Zek FoenerMila Jovovich

Thats all I got for now I will try to come up with some others and post 'em to ya.

Thanks for listening.

If I was making a Necroscope movie I'd condense the first 2 books into an hour and jump straight in at The Source.

HARRY - Rhys Ifans
KYLE - Sean Bean
ZEK - Famke Janssen
DRAGOSANI - MIchael Massee (the villain from the first season of 24)

LADY KAREN - Sigourney Weaver
SHAITHIS - The Undertaker (believe me it would work)

In fact the more I think about it the more I believe all the Wamphyri lords were meant to be played by WWE wrestlers.

THE DWELLER - Marc Dacascos (from the Crying Freeman film)

The film should be at least 150 - 180 mins long and from there become an epic series, as the Harry Potter movies are.
I'm not a Harry Potter fan, I just think the Necroscope movies should be done on the same scale.

In an ideal world I'd love to see Peter Jackson pick us the series an give it the full LOTR treatment, but essentially the books are very adult orientated and any producer would find it difficult to splash out on such a huge budget.

I do however have high hopes for the film(s), and seriously hope that justice is done to the series.

As far as special effects go, the advent of LOTR has ushered in a new era in combining CGI and prosthetics, which Necroscope could fully exploit, and be utterly convincing.

Fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed. to condense the first two books is crazy your a loony

Why?
I just don't think they would make very good films by themselves.

From The Source onwards is where the business is at.

I personally would hate them to condense the first two. Besisdes the vampire world trilogy they were my favourite books in the series. I think these two are the ones that have to be as close to the books as possible, more so than later ones. Theres so much to explain and so much going on. Harry needs to be introduced properly with his childhood, avenging his mother etc, you need to explain his powers, indeed all powers of all members of e-branch. Then the russian side of things needs to be explained, we need to see the ascension of Dragosani from man to Wamphyri and also introduce Thibor. Then you've got all the action, plenty of gore and stuff, necromancy, murder, dead things killing living things. Ahhh so much great stuff and thats just one book. If you condednsed two into an hour and then jumped into the source I fear the great majority of mere mortals who know nothing of Necroscope would overload their brains trying to work out whats going on and their heads would actually explode!

I totally agree Elior smile.gif there's nothing worse than a film supposing it's audience knows the characters before the movie starts.

christ2810
September 12th, 2005, 09:14 AM
Maybe so but you're looking purely from a fan's point of view.
I desperately want the film to be succesful, and I'd hate to see a mainstream audience walk away thinking "christ, that was boring".

I can almost imagine the reviews - "you've got to read the books to understand".

You can squeeze a hell of a lot of information into an hour of screen time, and there's no reason why some of the finer points can't be incorporated into later movies.

The Lord Of The Rings movies missed a fair bit from the beginning of the book, and it wasn't detrimental to the final product at all.

All I'm saying is, the main part of the whole Necroscope saga revolves around the Vampire World, and the Sunside/Starside wars should be the main focus of the movies.

All that comes before is merely set up for The Source as far as I'm concerned - and that's not taking anything away from the first two books - it's just that as great as they are, I don't think a lot of it would transfer into interesting cinema.
Sure, Dragosani's ascension should play a major part, along with Harry learning of the Moebius Strip. But the Yulian Bodescu saga is a little long winded and although it could create a neat set-piece, it doesn't really have much relevance to the later novels.

It's the age old battle of trying to please all of the people all of the time.
Obviously, the more hardcore fans will balk at the mere thought of omitting so much of the story, but sometimes less is more - especially when it comes to movies.

Try looking at the bigger picture and maybe you'll see where I'm coming from.

September 12th, 2005, 09:54 PM
I can totally see where you're coming from smile.gif and i'm not saying that you're wrong! All i am saying is I don't agree with you. The reason why they could leave so much out of the Lord of the rings was because it was so well read for generations and a vast amount of people knew the story, vaguely if not totally, anyway. With Necroscope, which I would presume would garner an adult rating, even with it's popularity the vast majority will never have heard of it.
All I am saying is that I would like as much characterisation as in the book so you know where Harry is coming from and what motivated him to do what he did.
Over the years I feel the best films are those that followed the book / comic in essence. I am in no way saying i'm right it's just my personal preference and sorry if you thought I was not taking your opinion into account. I feel you have a valid point too, it would be nice for to jump in at an action point rather like George Lucas did in Star Wars at episode 4. the only thing that worries me is the mess they'd make of going back if they ever decided to ... just look at Star Wars episode 1 ---- lololol
Anyway I hope we can agree to disagree smile.gif

OK fair comment JP.
I'm just glad I can finally vent my spleen about what is surely the greatest horror/fantasy saga of our time.
The Necroscope series makes Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles pale in comparison.
Although I think Neil Jordan did a stellar job of adapting Interview With The Vampire.

You made a very good point about jumping right into an action scene at the start.
Maybe they could use the Yulian Bodescu massacre as a set up and tell Harry's back story in flashback mode.
Just an idea to hook you in right from the start.

An even MORE extreme idea would be to make Necroscope 1 & 2 as a prequel - how controversial!

Does anyone have ANY information regarding the Necroscope film?
Is there a director on board?
Is there even a script?
We've done all this debating and no one seems to have a clue yet.

If I was to choose a director to make the film it would be Alex Proyas, of The Crow and Dark City fame.
I think his visual imagery and style is just what Necroscope conjures up in my mind.

Keep posting - it's very interesting to hear other peoples ideas!

September 13th, 2005, 09:10 AM
Yeah, what John Paul said. Plus in my opinion, the first two books were just as exciting as the source and if they were done right theres no way people would think they were boring. And thats what it comes down to really isn't it. Doing them right. Any Necroscope movie would be great if it was done right. But then again 'right' is only a matter of opinion as well I suppose. Personally I like your thinking christ2819 on Alex Proyas. I've never seen Dark City but The Crow had a dark feeling to it which is how i'd like Necroscope to feel. Even darker was Sin City. Who was that? Rodriguez? That sort of darkness suits the Wamphryi. Also the music from Sin City was very grim and foreboding and the narrative worked really well. I reckon that style would do Necroscope Justice.

John & Paul
September 14th, 2005, 12:34 AM
You've never seen Dark City Elior? Damn you'd better rent it and watch it..I think it's brilliant.. one of the first DVD's I bought many moons ago.. If you liked the Crow and Sin City you'd love Dark City I'm sure.

christ2810
September 15th, 2005, 06:01 AM
Dark City certainly has the feel of what I'd like a Necroscope film to have.
The claustrophobic darkness, impending dread, and deep, deep mystery.
The Sin City comparison though, is spot on. Aside from the (intended) comic book feel of the movie, it has a structure and design that would encapsulate Necroscope perfectly. Maybe Rodriguez would be the perfect director?
If Alex Proyas wasn't available of course!

On the other hand, the movie Stargate was all I imagined The Source to be.
I definitely believe the producers were influenced by it in some way.

As far as music goes, I could plump for the easy option and say I'd like Danny Elfman to do it, but after some thought, Alan Silvestri would be the man I'd choose.
His work on The Abyss was phenomenal.

Oh, and Elior - don't listen to what J&P said - don't rent Dark City, BUY Dark City! You won't regret it. I'm gonna watch it again now, I've almost forgotten how good it is.

I think Jack Nicholas would be an awesome Canker...of course you'd have to die his hair, but he's played some awesome evil characters before.

I honestly think they should look for a new face to play Harry, though. We need to have a performer we can grow to love, just as we did Harry. But maybe Ed Norton for Alec Kyle??? What do you all think?

lol yeah that's who I meant...

Was also thinking Scarlet Johansen might make an awesome Wrathra...she's got the right look to her if she dyed her hair like she did for Superman Returns. If not, maybe as Zek?

I read earlier where someone thought the same person should play Nathan and Nestor, but clearly the books say though they are twins, Nathan was pale colored, where Nestor was more gypsy looking...

:D Dragonsoni (necromancer), letz see, why not Brad Pitt, and as for Harry keogh, why not use Christan Slater? I think I remeber reading in one of Brians Books that Harry was described as blonde, thin, but very quick and agile in appearance. The head of the Russian E-branch, why not jack Nickelson? But Never Nicholas Cage for any role in any of these flicks, God, he iz by all means a Movie killer, not to mention a one hit wonder..... he killed the ghost rider bit, dude sucks....

Sticking Sean Connery's head in a jar might be fun, but not very loyal to the script, at all!

Unless we cast him as one of the army of dead guys when Harry attacks the chateau, some of 'em are pieces of bodies rather than the full body so it might work...
