Okay...so nobody except Tops reads around here? I read every day! Are you all telling me you wouldn't like to read or re-read some Brian Lumley books and discuss them? Well, Lumlian knowledge took a few days to get going and look how that turned out!! I'll just have to hope this takes off too. :D
So what I'm going to do is finish up on Dreamcatcher by Stephen King and then post the name of the BL book I plan to start. I'll read three stories from it (yes, it will be a short story book) and whatever my thoughts on them are...I'll post it here after the specified time is up.
When you see the name of the book I plan to read, you can either read along with me or not. When I've given my thoughts on it, you can either provide some thoughts you had on it or not. If you've read what I'm reading before, feel free to attempt to discuss it from memory. You don't have to reply to this if you plan to join me...or you can!! Doesn't matter...
...I'll be reading and posting anyway!! :D

Fruiting Bodies and Other Fungi
I'll be ready to start by next Wednesday and posting my thoughts the Wednesday after that...that's the 30th and the 6th. smile.gif

Due to certain very important work that needs to be finished, I am going to push the 'start date' back to the original 'post date'...the sixth of June.
Dust off that book or run to the bookstore or simply click on over to Amazon.com. smile.gif Just get this book! I hear it's worth it...we'll see! smile.gif

It's the sixth of June...do you know where you copy of Fruiting Bodies is?
I'm starting tonight, reading three stories, and posting on them next Wednesday...the thirteenth.
The stories I will be reading are picked at random because of their intriguing titles. That's the way I read short story books so that's the way I'll do it here! tongue.gif Here they are...
The Man Who Felt Pain
The Pit-Yakker
The Thin People
I could very well be a one man 'group' but do I feel foolish...?
A little...but ***k it!! :D

Hiya Nathan
Put me down so you're not in a one man group.
I made of a point of reading all off Brian's short story collections before I went to meet him in April, so a lot of them are fresh in my mind.
I'll re-read your 3 selections though and add to your posts next week. See what we come up with.

Nathan,
I've had a thought (hope you don't mind!).
What if people could read at their own speed (such as me as I have a huge mound of books on the go), or even only 1 short a week... then I know I would be more interested as I could give it the time it needs ;) Also rather than picking titles from a book, you could just list the story name, that way people will know if they have it, e.g. The wishperer has a lot of stories that are repeats from books of shorts over here.
I've actually read the stories that you're talking about in the last year, so it wouldn't take much to refresh my memory. I'll certainly either read the Pit Yakker or the Thin People this weekend.
How's that for a start?
Tops.

June 7th, 2001, 09:11 PM
Jase--You da sh** dude!! Thanks!! smile.gif And if you think you can go from your memory, feel free! But I've already got one question on The Man Who Felt Pain that might require some rescanning... :D
Tops--You da sh** too!! smile.gif The only reason I use time restrictions is so no one will post before the week is up and ruin something for someone who hasn't finished. You don't have to be done by the time the week is up, but be prepared for spoilers at that time. I'll be done with all three stories well before the thirteenth, but will hold my toungue just to make sure everyone else has a chance to finish. And the reason I listed the stories was mainly because I knew they could be found elsewhere in other books, magazines, etc...wherever you got 'em...that's cool. smile.gif
Thanks again guys!! smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif
(I was starting to feel little like the baby osrtich from Bugs Bunny that kept sticking his head in the sand saying, "They left me all alone!!" :D)

Also, possibly a good idea would be to have a new thread for each story.... that way I wouldn' get as confused!

Recount those stories from memory, you're joking, aren't you.

I've got one story left to go and will read that tonight.

Ok, I'm in. smile.gif I finished my part of that important project and can read for pleasure again!! yay! :D
Starting at the top of the list tonight...I'll try to have them all done by tomorrow... smile.gif
Nathan
June 12th, 2001, 06:07 PM
Cool Shadoe!! I've already got my post prepared though, so you better hurry! smile.gif
I thought about what you said Tops, but a different thread for each story might be way too many threads...and all of them small. One for each book would be a good idea, but I think we can keep it easy with one thread for all the stories in Fruiting Bodies. We can always start new ones if it does get confusing. smile.gif
I post tomorrow morning. Will everyone be ready? Deano...? You back yet dude? smile.gif

Nathan,
well I'm still at first base as I've only read one of the stories, but that wont stop me ;)
I still think it could get a bit confusing, but like you said we'll see... it's your call, after all it's your thread!
So will the hthread be called "group read - fruiting bodies"?
TOps
Nathan
June 12th, 2001, 10:33 PM
Unless I come up with something more creative...probably so. :D
There are 13 stories in the book, so we'll try the first 7 in one thread and see how it goes from there.

OK so I'll choose one of my favourites from the book... it was a toss up between the Mirror of Nitocris (originally from the caller of the black) and Fruiting bodies.
Well Fruiting bodies won.
Tere you go ;)
Nathan
June 14th, 2001, 05:55 PM
The Man Who Photographed Beardsley
Fruiting Bodies
...and a short one...The Deep-Sea Conch.
And Shadoe's choice...
That will leave only six stories to go before we can start A Coven of Vampires... :D Think you'll have it by then Canker? Wanna play?
Just to move this along a bit quicker, I'll be posting on these four (whatever the fourth might be) next Wednesday instead of Friday.

Unknown to me at the time of my earlier post, The Cyprus Shell is a story that goes along with The Deep-Sea Conch.
Luckily for me, Shadoe hasn't picked the fourth story yet...so here are our four stories to read by Wednesday...
Fruiting Bodies
The Man Who Photographed Beardsley

Hi Tops,
I think you mean DAGON'S BELL
That would be a good choice, as most stories are short. smile.gif
topol_sheap
June 19th, 2001, 05:56 PM
Hi Deano (how are you and how are things?),
You're correct... so many books, and so many short storiesm to choose from.... Dagon's Bell sounds to me like a very good idea, it's been a while since I looked at that!
Cheers for the correction,
TOps
Nathan
June 19th, 2001, 06:15 PM
Dagon's Bell is one that I'm working on getting. Can we do another one first? I had a shoddy paperback copy 'till about a month ago and sold it to spur me to seek out a better edition.
I do have No Sharks in the Med though, if you really want to read it soon. smile.gif
...and looking through the 'storybooks' that I do have, some of the titles look kinda familiar! By the time I read the last book, I might only need to read two or three stories!
Jason of Khem
June 19th, 2001, 09:35 PM
Nathan
As an idea!
So this doesn't get too confusing with lots of messages between everyone, do you want to select the book we'll read next, and just read all the stories in sequence.
That way there won't be lots of posts flying about with every one suggesting different stories from the same collection.
You can then list the particular stories we'll be covering for that week. We won't be jumping around the place and people can join in or miss a week if they want to.
If this works out OK, we can maybe in future have a round-robin for people to choose which other books to read.
Jason
Nathan
June 19th, 2001, 10:10 PM
Ohhhh the pressure!!
...but I can do it...sure. smile.gif I just didn't want it to seem like no one had a choice in the matter. Though too many Chiefs and not enough Indians does tend to get out of hand.
So Chief N8 say...A Coven of Vampires shall be next! Ifum no like, I bashum heads, take scalp. :D
Do you think one story a night would be too hard? Maybe one every other night? That way we'd be discussing one at a time...might go quicker too. I can do it, easy...how 'bout yous guys? smile.gif
Lagula Longarm
June 19th, 2001, 11:12 PM
Ok let me get this right.....we'll read Fruiting bodies a story or two every other day, then A Coven of Vampires
That sounds good to me.... :D

June 20th, 2001, 06:10 PM

Okay...the first Group Read went pretty well I'd say, considering the depletion of The Aerie. Who's up for the next one? I believe it was A Coven of Vampires that was next on the list.
One story every other day. Let's start with The House of the Temple...thoughts posted on Friday the 6th.
For those of you not participating this time, be on the hunt for Demogorgon if you want to be in on the next one in a couple of weeks...that is, if you don't already have it. It's about time we tried a longer one...and I've been wanting to reread this one. smile.gif When I first read it, my brain was on Deadspawn, which was forthcoming. I don't remember much about it. :(

Hiya Nathan
Yep the first book read went OK. Good inter-action between Board members. OK Coven is the next collection, I'll read Temple tonight.
Not read Demogorgon for years. It'll be good to re-visit it as our first chosen novel.
It's also good to see that the books picked for the reading group so far aren't from the Necro-series. A small step in wiping away the popular perception that Brian only writes vampire stories.

No problem Tops. As with anyone else out there, feel free to jump in and read the stories whenever you're able or want to.
I might as well reiterate also that if you remember the story well enough from previous adventures, you too (U2?) can jump in at any time and give a thought or answer a question. Sometimes the questions don't necessarily require reading anyway. Some of you just know stuff.
And Jase? Hee hee...I'm glad you like my choices. smile.gif But fear not! The Necroscope cometh...with a twist. :D (hopefully.)

Okay...Just so I don't have to post after each story, (and also because I keep forgetting) here's the itinerary for the rest of A Coven of Vampires. The days that follow are the post days...
Monday the 16th--The Kiss of the Lamia
Wednesday--The Strange Years and The Thief Immortal
Friday--The Thing From the Blasted Hetah
Monday the 23rd--Uzzi and Haggopian
Wednesday--The Picnickers and Zack Phalanx is Vlad the Impaler!
That should round out the book. Demogorgon will officially begin on Thursday the 26th. smile.gif

Actually, nothing is required of you! Well...except reading! smile.gif
It's called a Group Read, and that's all I really expect...to read it with me...share my experience.
If you do happen to read something you deem worthy of a post (or a question you might have) then hop right in, little bunny. smile.gif
If you see something in my ramblings you'd like to respond to, that's welcome too.
If you want to write a synopsis...be my guest.
If you want to play by memory...
Shoot...anything goes except reviews. I think I remember that not being allowed here. I just try to read through and take little notes on what I want to say as I go along...questions, thoughts, whatever... smile.gif
The main thing is the reading of the book. It's just a way to sort of share the experience of a good book with others and possibly gain some insight into things you might miss or the way in which others might view something totally differently than you.
Does that make sense? Probably not. Here's a one word summary...READ! smile.gif
Who else gonna participate? Anyone? smile.gif

I'd just like to thank all those who participated in my little adventure and say that I have thoroughly enjoyed reading these stories. I'd have enjoyed them on my own just as much, but I think that I will retain my memory of them much more so having done this and shared it with you all.
If anyone out there reads these stories in the future and would like to respond to the comments posted in the various threads, feel free. There are questions I had that have yet to be answered and I look forward to the thoughts of others in the future.
Anyone in the future who wants to suggest another book to do this with...that is welcomed as well. smile.gif For now though...I've got some other reading to do.

It was a great idea Nathan :) Reading the past Group Read's have made my mouth water for the other books of Brian's that I will read. Thanks too for letting me do my rambling as well with Demogorgon!
Have got a few books to read myself, finishing the Dreamland series, the Mercedes Lackey book thats patiently awaiting and the LOTR books too that Jase sent me among many, many others... its an happily endless process!
I have to say, above movies, tv, audio & the newer E-Books... there is nothing like getting comfortable and having a book in your hands and your imagination flowing with the author as you go into their world!

Been a great ride and having the chance of re-reading some of older Brian's work and discussing it with others.
Like others, my reading back-list is getting a bit silly, but I'll slip in an old book of Brian's that I haven't read for years from time to time along with new additions to my collection.

Ok - I want to be sure on this - we are starting Hero tonight, right?
And because of real life - let's give everyone a week to read it, with responses and thoughts coming next monday, the 20th. Sound good? smile.gif

Sounds much better Shadoe, hopefully I'll be able to get it read by then... if I don't get distracted! :) And I was assuming we are starting on the first book also. Would make sense to do it that way.

Who's up for a Group Read involving the Necroscope books?
No thoughts or lengthy posts required for this one. And no time limits...I've been saving a new twist on it for these.
Details to follow pending participation... smile.gif

I'm not attempting anything. smile.gif
I got the idea from another site where they have Group Reads. They choose a book. They set a time limit and a "don't post before" date and they all read the book! At the same time. And then discuss it.
SK has a lot more books that stand alone than does BL, while all connecting in some way. I guess that's why more people are involved with it...more speculation and hypothesis. I guess there's just more to talk about in them.
But I wouldn't have thought so when I started these. I can find a million things to talk about in BL's books. Especially the short stories! (Which I hadn't yet read when this all began...)
The main thing is that the books get read...and I thought it was cool to be reading at the same time as others. Wondering what they see, feel, take with them, etc...
This new one is so simple it's scary. Read Necroscope and name the current chapter. I didn't even read the first chapter to name it. I bet Pote (Luvaduck) didn't read the second either! It'll probably be necessary to read them from here on out though. smile.gif
Was I that vague in my innitial explanations?

Any chance of getting the group read going again? Anyone...?
Nathan
February 19th, 2002, 05:32 PM
I'm game if anyone else is...
I'm currently taking a break from a third trip through my King collection with Koontz' new book, One Door Away from Heaven, but I was planning on extending my break long enough to read a recently aquired copy of Khai of Ancient Khem.
I also have Caller of the Black and Beneath the Moors to get through. Oh! And we never made it to the last two Dreamlands books.
You guys choose. I'll go along with whatever. Heck, I'll even reread something.

whats the point? everytime someone says anything critical on a book, the post usually gets "pulled"?????? for being negative. what fun and purpose is a group read when it gets restricted to be a pure "glory fest advert for a certain book". its beyond me...
Goth Girl
February 19th, 2002, 09:04 PM
Well, I thought the point was a discussion on the book in question? Everyone gets something different from every book, and has different views and opinions of things going on in the book.
I haven't been the most regular participant in this thread, but I have enjoyed reading other people's views on some of the books, which have broadened my views on some of my favourite books, and have picked up on nuances that I may have missed.
Surely we're all intelligent enough (and no, of course I don't include myself!) to discuss a book without it having to be a criticism or a glory fest? smile.gif
Nathan
February 20th, 2002, 01:48 AM
It's never been that hard for me to come up with the good points on BL's books.
EDIT--If you don't wanna play... don't. Why make it awkward for others?

I don't know if you saw my original post, VD, but I edited it.
After rereading your post, I don't feel like you're very deserving of my placating tones or tactics.
Your tone was definately not very friendly, and I'm having enough trouble getting people interested in this without your bitterness.
So if you wanna play, fine. I'd be happy to have you. I'd even hear you out on all this criticism you've been storing up so angrily. I for one would be fascinated to see what exactly it is that bothers you so about these (IMHO) amazing tales.

here here!
I kept my tongue quiet and I still will. The Group read thread is to discuss what you thought of the section we are reading. How you interpreted it and how it compares to others. It is in no way a praising or a bashing of any book.
Simple.
If you don't like a certain book - by all means don't perticipate in the group read. If you do like it, then do participate.
Simple.
So are we to finish the Dreamlands then? smile.gif

much to the contrary, last time i participated in a group read for demogorgon, my views were clearly not welcome and my postings pulled. the powers that be, felt that there was no place for critisism on this board. hence the reason for my previous posting. im FOR readings, as long as the forum accepts postive and negative critisism, hence the purpose of the group read, to create a balanced discussion, not a glory fest.
Oh and nathan get my name right... its VonD or vondarkmoor, not VD smile.gif

Click here VonD (http://www.brianlumley.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=000088), and you will find that not only were your posts left for all to see, they both contain what I would term negative constructive criticism.
I remember the HOD situation but that was (you must admit) a little different. You weren't so nice and objective with that one. Plus, it wasn't even part of a Group Read!
I think a little leeway will be shown when it comes to a group discussion and what might be posted within. But to just come along and rip a book and say nothing about the good points too was probably not the best idea.
And I'm sorry I abbreviated your name incorrectly... poor punctuation and mispellings seem to be a problem for me...

I'd be interested in the group read if we can put petty arguments aside. As you know I may drop out as I did last time, as you moved on to novels, and I have plenty I still have to read that isn't BL (hope you don't mind the abreviation) related. SO how about Iced on Aran as it's short stories;)
What do you reckon guys?

In the already existing Dreamlands thread (http://www.brianlumley.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=000087), we'd only made it through Hero and Ship of Dreams.
Would you all mind if we hit Mad Moon of Dreams before moving on to Iced on Aran?
And when should posting time be if this is okay with you? Monday? Tuesday?
Whatchoo think?
