what I liked the most about the new version was Estella Warren... what a babe! Did you notice near the end the really bad continuity error??? All the way through she has the strap thing to hide her cleavage, and then near the end she loses for one shot, and then it's back smile.gif But hey I see she will have a long career!

The apes were great.

The story was, well I dunno really, but it was a little disapointing.

isnt it a historically incorrect re-inactment of the american civil war. rather than the a true repeat of the original plot, thats what i heard in a review of it on TV?

I prefer the original film so I'll give this one a miss.

As everyone knows, the ending of the 1968 film where Charlton Heston comes across the Statue of Liberty and realises he is on Earth, is one of the great cinematic moments.

The reviews I've read in the paper say that there's a twist at the end of the new film. Not comparable to the original's ending, but they don't actually mention what this is.

Can anyone who's seen the film mail me at mr0jg06@yahoo.com so this thread doesn't become a spoiler for any people who are yet to see the film.

Von Darkmoor - this film has been hyped as a re-imagining, whatever that means  and closer to the outline of the 1963 novel.
The studios taking great pains to say it's not a re-make or sequel.

It's one thing if Hollywood do re-makes of crappy Jerry Lewis films, e.g. The Nutty Professor, but another when they make an inferior copy of a decent film.

Charlton Heston - put his vest on

Hear about this from a review of the film.

look for in the new film are a few scenes that are ammusing:

the apes are playing cards and they all yell "cheater, cheater" at one of the ones whos cheating. irony of it: Cheatah was the name of tarzans chimp companion...

Charlton Heston appears in the new film playing the part of an ape, and he repeats the immortal lines "damn you all" taken from when he sees the statue of liberty from the very first film. Heavily made up as an ape most people would miss this.

Proves that Tim Burton has a funny side.

I heard that the ending is supposed to be really good, which one as theres 3 endings they shot. Dont spill the beans i havent seen this yet....

Hmm, this is one I will probably never see. Doesn't want the originals ruined, plus, can see no reason to see it.

Just amazed that Charlton would even want a cameo in this at all... Money Talks

not going to spoil it for anyone just have to say that the ending just doesn't make sense

Eric when u see it, send us an email to explain it to me coz i really don't understand it and i'll tell u why i don't get it

just alot of money, bad acting, great technique (thats where the money went) and a waste of time, like Ema, i wish that i hadn't gone, but i'm going to go rent out the 68 and watch it again

ooh ooh aah!

mark walburg (sP?) who plays the astronaut aka heston. said in an interview that he wished he could have explored his relationship with hellen bonna carters character (chimp). interesting fact, as im sure the film builds on the tension between them as the bikini clad amazon looks on with jealousy? i dont see any problem with them taking it further. as we are only a sligh % difference in dna, well arent we.

mark welbugh's character seems to be a tad thick and dull for a supposed astronaut? perhaps its another unspotted irony i.e. we sent chimps into space in the early 50's during the space race.

i must go and see this film, when i do i will send a few emails on my opinions around.

In answer to Ema's query as to why Charlton Heston agreed to appear in the new version, all I can say is
"Money talks and Monkey walks". BOOM BOOM!

I've heard there's plans afoot for a sequel. In the next film an astronaut crash lands on a planet full of Charlton Hestons. LOL
It's called "Planet of the Cheeky Monkeys".

Now that would be a good one to watch, "Get you hands off me, you damned cheeky monkey".

What a phenomenal waste of time and money. All this film did was remind me how great the original was. I really thought Tim Burton could do no wrong until I suffered this. Dreadful 0/10.

:(

oh thank God, i was beginning to think that i was in the minority

but i still don't get the ending, if someone can explain that to me i might at least have had one minute bit of enjoyment

ok - Here I am to go against the grain. I liked the movie overall. It was an enjoyable stress reliever.

I agree - the ending was weak - I mean, who would leave the babe in hope of seeing if you could 'recreate' the time flux that brought you there? Look how weird it worked...the monkey vanished first and Marky Mark landed first. And who is to say lightning would strike 3 times?

As far as what actually happened in the ending - the only thing i can figure is, he didn't get back to the right parrallel dimension and he went to one where the apes had evolved for some reason on Earth and not the humans.

Who knows....maybe you're all right - maybe it did suck. smile.gif Maybe I was just being nice the night I went to see it because I didn't want to be let down by it. :D

Shadoe

thats what i thought but still it missed the whole point of the original movie

the going back to a parallel dimension was already done in back to the future II and that was good dammit

ah well, if u like it, u like it!

This was based on the book which ends in much the same way.
Thade, who is alive when last we see him, knows that the astronaught's ship is in the swamp. The statue is of Thade. The assumption must be that Thade travelled in time and space to Earth, changing history. Another assumption would be that Tim Burton makes flawed movies.

Just watched this one last night, after a long evening at work it was great to kick back and switch my brain off to.

Forget the lack of character, forget the stuff about the remake/reimagining not living up to the first, forget all that stuff with intelligence etc...

It's a Hollywood movie, OK a Burton movie but still a Hollywood movie. There for popcorn sales and franchising.

It was fun mindless stuff.

And I still reckon that no-one can write a score like Danny Elfman...

Hmmm . . . well, it does sort of make sense. However, I'm also halfway convinced that 25 different people could make 25 different plausible sounding endings as well. But I guess I'll go with this one until I hear one of the other 24! :D

Hmmm.. "that monkey film" again. I preferred the original where King Louis and Baloo did that funny dance. That was an epic...

What?! eh..,Oh! Sorry... THAT monkey movie..., hmm. I thought that the ending was a little haphazard, but I thought that the movie itself was ok.

"No! We can't use the Statue of Liberty again! Lets use another national monument and give it a twist we can justify later"....

Anyhow, I thought Earth WAS the planet of the apes... where is the controversy? Just look around. I'm surrounded by cheeky monkeys all the time!

Note to all Pedants: The interchangeable use of words "monkey" and "ape" is intended solely for humorous purposes and is in no way intended as a slur on the character of either primate genus, living or dead.

On a slightly more serious note, has anyone read the book "Monkey Planet" by Pierre Boulle, which Rod Sterling (ning, ning, ning, ning!) adapted into the first movie??

He also wrote "Bridge over the River Kwai".

Had to back track to this thread as I saw Planet of the Apes for the 1st time on my flight home Monday and I'm not ashamed to say.... I didn't get the ending. I knocked around a few idea re time fluxes etc blah blah blah, but no! Anyway, Pote, the link you put on here doesn't seem to have an explanation anymore, so if ya can remember buddy an email would be most appreciated :D

Storm,
Alas, I don't have a copy of the page. I deleted it a couple of weeks ago when i was making the move to XP, and can find no cache of the site at any search engines. My explanation to the end of the movie is that it is a pointless peice of crap. This may be closer to the truth than any contortions of logic.

The make-up artistry was amazing(ameteur make-up artist speaking!), and the plot was vaguely interesting... but the end was AWFUL!!!! If it got much worse then that, I would have to write a nasty letter to the writer's!
