This has got the gray matter working .... as a Fulci and Argento fan I'm trying to think of some good effort from that era ....

At the moment 'near dark' springs to mind ... but is that really classed as low budget???

Here's a new one I just invented... "JB - She's ALIIIIIIVE!!" Nice to see ya hon!

One of the worst has gotta be that George Hamilton spoof, "Love at First Bite" and one of the best (although I have no idea on it's budget, it just looks cheap!) is "Cronos".

Trying to think through my vid/DVD collection for others, but too tired to think straight today!

GG - I remember that un' - it was a real stinker.... Can anyone remember 'Blackula'? - I am sure that was its title .. another rather tacky 70s effort I think.

'Return to Salems Lot' certainly looked a rather cheap low budget affair ....

I don't know about low budget, but a cheesy vampire flick I liked was Fright Night.

Lupa the Ancient
February 17th, 2003, 12:24 PM
A personal favourite - Zoltan, Hound of Dracula.

I also really liked the 'salems lot mini series (not the butchered video film version).....

Fright Night was very cheesy, Roddy McDowell et al, but I agree very enjoyable....

All the Hammer films ... especially Dracula Prince of darkness and Vampire Circus....

I think I best stop .. I could go on all day!! :D

how about Dracula - Prince of Darkness... now that was all style and no content!

I love Hammer - any Hammer! It's totally cheesetastic but good for a late night in an a bottle of red!

I also love the really old Dracula, the one with Bela Lugosi as the Count, pure class! (Not sure which class but class all the same)

Nice ta see you guys too - I know, long time no see, eh?

Thought of another one... it's really weird & it has Cage in it... I cannot recall the name... I've never seen the beginning, so I'm not sure whether he's a nutcase pretending to be a vampire, or if he really is one...

Oh!!! And one of my all-time fav's is "My Best Friend is a Vampire"! Classic!

hammer films are wicked... countess dracula has to be one of the chessiest - a ham-fest one might call it.

Oh and wasn't there a dodgy lesbian vampire film with grace jones?

Goth Girl

I have a book at home that lists almost every vampire film ever (well, until the book was printed in the early 90s... I think FFC's version of Dracula just about made it in). Has nice little 'bat ratings' for each film!

Sadly enough I made it my mission to try watch them all, however got bored with watching so many cheap/bad films and gave up years ago! Would love to see some the Chinese hopping vampire films though.

Guess I should dig this book out, would be a great source of info for threads like this.. might even make it into another quiz thread, for general vamp films, if anyone's up for it?

Sounds like a good one to me GG .... anything to get the olde gray matter working while sat at my desk!!!

Just out of curiosity - was there a film called 'blackula'? mentioned in your book, or was it a figment of my imagination??

A1 - there was a film Blacula ,I think it was made in the 70's.. you could check out http://www.imbd.com for more info.

Cheers Tops ... I always forget that site - altough the link you put on transposed the B and D and sent me to a dodgy dateline site ..... thanks anyway I am meeting a blonde Buffy lookalike tonight at 8.00pm --- who needs Blacula?!?!!? :D

Goth Girl

Yup, there was a Blacula, and also a sequel to it, although I can't remember the name, something like Blacula Strikes again, or Return of Blacula, whatever!

The one that springs to mind for me has to be the Lance Henrikson flick (think it was made for TV, at least it has that look to it) Near Dark... Another, which I can't remember the title of, starred an american soap actor as a 'cop battling his demons, can only come out at night and really wants to eat cooked meat...' or some such - was a series pilot, and cornier than the jolly green giant!

Tops I don't know about one with Grace Jones but Hammer did a dodgy Vampire film (one of the many) with lesbians in at called Lust for a Vampire. It was set in a girls school.

I know it's not a vampire film but I had to tell you that one of my all time favourite cheesy horror films was An American Werewolf in London, It's this topic, it's bringing back nostalgia from when I used to go bargain hunting in old second hand video shops, I found lots of good stuff for under a fiver!

February 20th, 2003, 09:01 PM
vampires, lesbians and school girls? whatever next smile.gif

It might not have had the lesbians like I thought, but I think the film I was talking about was Vamp, and as for Amercian Werewolf in London... "don't go onto the moors"... fantastic smile.gif

February 20th, 2003, 09:06 PM
That's - Stay to path, don't go on t'k moors!... Good ole Brian Glover...

(BTW, moors has 2 syllables in Yorkshire, alreet? tongue.gif )

And Highlabder - was relatively low budget, had characters living a long time feeding off the life-force (ok pedants, quickening) of others... a vamp by any other name?

Having only just read I am Legend again, can anyone tell me if there was ever a film made of the book ?
The only thing I can remember which was related was that awful Charlton Heston flick the Omega man ...now that has to rate as one of the worst (is there such a word) films of all time. ;)

Lupa the Ancient
February 21st, 2003, 09:53 AM
To my knowledge only The Omega Man bares any resemblance to that CLASSIC novel.... (and it was pretty crap!)

Reckon its over to GG to check in her book.....

Sorry to say that The Omega Man is the film version of I Am Legend, even though they have nothing in common.
Charlton Heston - Put his vest on

Oops forgot to add, my low budget Vamp film is "Carry On Screaming"

Mindless Movie Trivia Moment... There was going to be another adaptation of the book starring Big Arnie as the Last Man on Earth and Ridley Scott was penned in as director - but that movie hung on the success of the film Mr Scott was making at the time which was, unfortunately, GI Jane...

I think you can guess what did (or rather didn't) happen next...

OK, as for "I am Legend" there is a new movie in the works. Supposedely Will Smith will play the title character...don't know how I feel about that, was originally supposed to be Arnold S. in the title role but he turned it down for something..maybe for T3 or one of his other amazingly original projects.

As for bad Vampire movies, And I swear I am not making this up, the other night I was unable to sleep and about 3AM TNT had a movie on I had never heard of, it starred Keith Carradine as Dracula in the old west and was called "Billy the Kid Versus Dracula" REALLY bad. Looked to have ben shot using light filters for night and all hte old Western movie sets.

Billy the Kid vs Dracula?

And I thought I'd seen every dodgy vamp flick, I'm going to have to hunt that little gem (in the rough) out!

And welcome - have fun!

1964's Italian-produced "The Last Man on Earth" ("L'Ultimo Uomo Della Terra") was the first attempt to bring "I Am Legend" to the screen. It starred Vincent Price in the lead role.

I am Legend - the man in the title role should be Edward Norton - that's who I'd think of. just a thought!

LL just bought me "Lifeforce" t'other day.

This has to qualify in this thread. I must say though, I actually enjoyed the film

Alien vampires, dodgy SAS men. It has it all

Dark Mark

I have a soft spot for that film dodgy though it may be. I thought it had a real Quatermas feel about it and the lead vampire (Mathilda May) was to die for.

Goth Girl

Dammit, must've taken my vampire film book home... could've found out more about the Billy the Kid film!

Wonder if it's as good as "Vampires at Sundown - The Retreat" which had one of the Carradines in it too, shooting vamps with wooden bullets!

Going back to I Am Legend, I agree with Tops about Edward Norton!

Just read a review of the script for I am Legend and it sounds really good and thingy Mann who did Ali is the director and apparently Will Smith is up for the lead (not sure how that will go down)

Weird thing is it's a book I've never read but I'm hoping to rectify that soon.

I remember bringing up LifeForce in another thread - or at least I think I did?

Anyways - top film - topless alien vamps wandering through the deserted streets of London town... Great score and rates 3 gorganzolas on the cheese scale! tongue.gif

The Mad American
July 11th, 2003, 05:58 PM
Ah yes, I too have a soft spot for Lifeforce.

I don't know if I would put it into the catagory of low budget though...Maybe it was just those amazing 1980 special effects that make me think that.

GG I am also looking for the Billy the Kid V Dracula, if I find anything I will put it in this string.

And I must say, WooHoo!! My people! Having a conversation about Lifeforce and cheesy Vamp films. How cool is that?

The Mad American
July 11th, 2003, 08:50 PM
GG, go to www.imdb.com (http://www.imdb.com) and do a search for Billy the Kid versus Dracula, they actually have it.
And I was mistaken, it was John Carradine playing Drac not Keith...They all look the same to me anyway.

July 11th, 2003, 09:01 PM
you sound surpirsed when you say "they actually have it"... I'm surprised that your surprised smile.gif

The Mad American
July 14th, 2003, 02:03 PM
I guess I shouldn't have been surprised but I always expect that it won't be as easy as going to a known site and finding what you are looking for. Oh well.....

if I understand you correctly... are you saying that imdb is "unknown"??? now I really am surprised!

The Mad American
July 14th, 2003, 04:58 PM
No,no, no Tops. I meant that IMDB was a known, but I always expect that it won't be as easy as going to a known site and finding what you are looking for. Hopefully this clears up some of the surprise factor there.

Enjoy.

The Little Vampire is an underrated low budget film IMO, it has Richard E Grant as a vampire dad and a whole herd of vampire cows, what more could one ask for?

Red Willow
July 15th, 2003, 05:01 PM
Heehee- i love the vampire cows! The little boy (whose name currently escapes me and the DVD's so far away in the next room, John...something, JM? never mind)is so cute in his little cape!

Hey everybody!
I've got another to add, did anyone say this one yet?
Bordello of Blood-----it does not get much more chessy or screwed up than that!

The Mad American
July 15th, 2003, 09:21 PM
I agree, Bordello of Blood fits right in..It did have Dennis Miller in it so that was a plus but he looked like he didn't know why he was there fro most of the movie.

Is that the Tales from the Crypt film?

If so, spooky coincidence... it's on British TV tonight (ITV, 11.20(?) if anyone's interested!)... I'd never heard of it til I read the paper this morning!

Due to morbid curiosity and the fact that it's impossible to sleep in this darn heat I watched Bordello of blood last night on ITV and yep it was the worsed ham and cheese sandwich I ever had to swallow but it did have semi naked chicks in it so not all bad then :D

I went out for a curry with friends, and forgot to set the video beforehand... didn't get home til it was almost finished

I'll try to catch it some other time, especially if it's got the JB seal of approval!

Started watching it but I'd been tidying my room (huge feat I'm telling you!) and so was very tired and fell asleep. GRRR! I alwasy fall asleep when I wanna watch something but can't get to sleep when there's nothing on!
