This hasn't been done in quite this way before, so I thought I would see how this pans out...

Curuently I've been watching:
Gangs of New York
The Mission
One Upon a Time in America
Insomnia

This thread may be a bad idea, but time will only tell!

Been watching the Superman movies with Chrisopher Reeve in cos I've got a little addicted to Smallville recently and they've started using the music from the films which got me a little geeked out and I just had to watch the films again. :D

There is a rather good DVD sale on at HMV at the moment so I have been watching

Spiderman £9.99
Nosferatu - The Vampyre (1979) £7.99
Blue Velvet £3.99

was tempted to watch superman at the weekend (not that I have it) after seeing smallville - which is actually pretty good, and it might even go on my must watch list of weekly TV smile.gif

Note, Goodfellas generally pops up on the TV about 1 a month smile.gif

I too have been taking advantage of HMV's generosity to replace my video collection with DVDs (anyone want an assorted stack of PAL vids, mostly main-stream gothic/horror, give me a yell!)

So recently I've been watching:

Razor Blade Smile
Usual Suspects
Dark City
Men In Black
Natural Born Killers

Also started to collect Buffy DVD boxsets, much to the horror and disgust of my bank balance!

A great source of cheap DVDs (apart from HMV!) is play.com (http://www.playserver5.com/play247.asp?)... got a Bill Bailey DVD for £8, rather than the £20 that HMV wanted for it.

Speaking of BIll Bailey, I saw him at the New Media Age Awards last week at the Grovnor Hotel in Park Lane... very boozy night...

I saw Usual Suspects a couple of weeks back, and I paid very litle for it, but I can't remember where I got it, but it was a place like play... at the time I picked up road to Perdition for a tenner, and that was about a week after the release - all I remember was they were having a massive sale.

I want to be watching LOTR The Two Towers, but I have to wait for that :(

If I'd known, I had a stack of videoes you could have had, but I gave them to charity... I am now one of the only people in the country who doesn't have a video recorder:( or player. It broke, and I didn't replace it as I had a DVD player at the time. I've been gradually getting my old favourites back, though christmas and birthday presents mainly;)

I've gone off topic, but I have the choice of:

Battle Royale, Jay and Silent bob Strike Back, Event Horizon, The Amnimatrix, Dare Devil, and another I can't mention!

Might watch one when I have some other things done this evening*

watched DareDevil last night as I had the night off (GF was out), so no calls, no nothing...

The movie's not too bad, a little thin in places, but the worst thing about it was the guy they chose to play dareDevil (Mr Jenny from the Block), and the choice for Bullseye was a little odd to - farrell didn't cut it....

I'm no big Ben"wooden"Afleck fan but I thought he did pretty well in the role of DD, and as for Colin"Will shag anything"Farell I thought he was brilliant as Bullseye.
It's just my oppinion mind but I thought it was a pretty top film.

Due to Katherine Hepburn passing away earlier this week, watched for the umpteenth time "Bringing Up Baby" and "The Philadelphia Story" co-starring the always excellent Cary Grant. Judy Judy Judy!

Been watching faaaaaaaar too many Dr Who vids as Jon Pertwee has now replaced Paul Weller as my style-icon and I want to fill my wardrobe with velvet smoking jackets, frilly shirts and silk-lined capes.

A mate has lent me a couple of great 60s Hammer films, Christopher Lee in The Devil Rides Out and Messrs Lee and Cushing in She.

Mr Black, you do realise that we now want to see you wearing velvet smoking jacket, frilly shirt and silk-lined cape at KC3?

Just ordered the next Buffy series on DVD... kinda glad there aren't many more to go... I'd be in serious financial trouble if they'd made many more series!

Got several films on VHS that I'm never gonna be able to replace on DVD, much to my annoyance (Killer Tongue and Hardware to name but two)... might have to figure out how to connect my video to my iMac and burn em to DVD... won't be great quality, but at least I'll have a digital copy.

Oh dear, well maybe by the time of KCon 3, my dapper Jon Pertwee phase might have passed and I'll be in Tom Baker mode wearing a floppy brimmed hat and a 14 foot scarf.

The two Hammer films I watched were superb and looking at tonight's BBC1 schedule, will be taping another good Cushing film, "And Now The Screaming Starts" with a great support cast, Steph Beacham, Herbert Lom, Ian Ogilvy and Patrick Magee.

Popped into my local video shop before and they've not got Daredevil in stock yet, so hired Gangs of New York and Dirty Pretty Things.

topol_sheap
July 5th, 2003, 08:33 AM
be very careful when trashing scorsese films.

I thought that gangs , was one of the best films so far this year, and to call it "pointless" is utterly mad... think about it, if gangs didn't do well, then no more psuedo non-commericial flicks would ever come out of Hollywood again, which would be a real shame as other non-mainstream directors wouldn't get a chance.

Also, it's likely that gangs is the last film where you will have fully built sets, rather than CGI. Building beautiful sets for films looks like it might become yet another lost art - a shame really.

You should take into account that Scorsese is one of my favourite film directors, and I've seen most if not all of his work, and understand the motivation behind a lot of it.

Irreversible has a couple of strong scenes in it and to make it even harder to watch it's filmed in dizzy inducing camera angles. The scenes spin round like crazy.

Sorry to hear that not everybody enjoyed Gangs of NY, but then again it would be a hell of a boring place if we all liked the same things! smile.gif

Just been catching up with the mysogynistic, rapist, murderous, quipping Bond flicks (still trying to work XXX out of my system) as well as watching Bowling for Columbine on DVD, it's strangely better than at the cinema, a film that works better when you're able to think about it more.

But fed up with thinking I'm having a day out tomorrow for a Tim Burton fest... Batman, Batman Returns, Sleepy Hollow, Beetlejuice, Ed Wood, Nightmare Before Xmas et al

I'll have you know I watch the cinema masterworks of Mr Jean-Claude Van Damme with a 21st century sense of post-ironic detachment.
The same applies to Hammer, Amicus and Carry On films.
Next to watch is my Dirty Harry DVD box set.

This isn't really my system of catagorising the degree of cheesyness, it's what I've been led to believe by my family.

Personally I would consider anything with Jean Claud Van Damm or Clint Eastwood in it to be far too cheesy to even consider watching for more than 5 seconds, and any Carry on film is a must see, but that's just my oppinion!

Haven't been watching any films lately but I have been watching series 4 of Sex and the City on DVD.

"special effect do not a movie make" - Yoda (sort of)

I think more than just the FF people could learn from that:) I thought FF was a waste of time, I even saw it at the cinema as it was dubbed "the most important special effects movie since the Matrix", it's a shame it didn't mention the plot being poor.... it did look good however :D

As for Phonebooth, I thought it was a cracking film, and Colin Farrell really held the screen well. Not sure if it's one I would watch again, but we'll see about that in due course!

The Princess Bride is a cracking flick - Cary Elwes hamming it up, Wallace Sawn chewing the scenery, that Spaish dude being a dude and Andre the Giant being simply huge!

And you cannot forget Chris Sarandon stealing every scene!

Also watched The Princess Bride again recently as it an excellent and underrated movie.

Went to see POTC again on Sunday which is a fairly rare thing for me to do, I just love the film, thought it was even better second time as I was able to pick out all the details one misses the first time much as I have discovered with the LOTR films.
Hanging on for the extended version of The Two Towers, though I was sorely tempted to purchase the standard release. Got to play with the replica swords a couple of weeks ago with a friend who collects them but I just can't justify a couple of hundred quid expense. November can't come soon enough for me what with Keogh con III, and The Return of the King to look forward to savy

like a mix between shaft and beneath the planet of the apes.
Awful awful awful Heston should have been shot for making the worst addaption of a book into a film ever.
Just hope Will Smith's version is better although I very much doubt it, but I'll hold back on my reservations until I've actually seen seen the movie.

I agree with ya there matey, Omega Man is pretty poor compared to the Classic Matheson book it pertains to be based on...

The force is strong, but at present have NOT purcased the 2 disc Two Towers effort ... its gonna be difficult but with the Delirium Book releases the olde finances will probably succeed in me not parting with my hard earned...

As a fan of the Planet of the Apes I have bought the 14 episode DVD that has just been released ...Love the Piere Boulle novel and the original Heston film, and as a kid always enjoyed the series, so abit of a nostalgic look back... still stands up well I reckon and alongside Starsky & Hutch and The Six Million Dollar Man are great TV series from the 70s.

I've banned myself from watching films til the Xmas break, so I have a pile of new DVD's to watch over the holidays... 28 Days Later (which I'm really looking forward to), House of 1000 Corpses (which I adored at the cinema!), and Pirates of the Caribbean, to list but a few. If anyone has a large Goth-sized spatula to prise me from my sofa by Jan 5, it would really be appreciated! ;)

Though I've ogt a couple of things in my stocking this year which will redeem me - honestly... tongue.gif

I don't understand why you all hate T3 so much... I know it's arnie and it's action, but for this years sequel, it's a good one, which I found inifinitely better than T2... it had a much better story and wasn't based purely on special effects.

As for Christmas pap... I want to see Elf and Bad Santa.

28 Days Later rocks. It's not that depressing, well for a zombie flick.. you want depressing, just watch the middle hour of Dawn of the Dead. I fancy house of a 1000 corpses, but I'm thinking it's not the film to share with my Mrs. She's not a horror fan, not one bit, which is a problem at times!

I want to watch the work print of Alien 3 right now. I'm in the minority when I say it's one of the best of the "trilogy", and I hear the work print is better than the original.

Right, enough of that,

Just watching Dog soldiers again. It's fantastic, funny and scary. There's a bit in it wich also reminds me of a dream when I was a kid. A werewolf rolling my mums head in it's mouth as it peered under the table where I had hidden. I'll never forget that dream. Am looking forward to borrowing back my dads xmas pressie. Sopranos 4 dvd. I repressed the urge to unwrap and watch it before he got it. I have the 1st series of 6 feet under to watch yet. Sitting on my shelf waiting is also The Elephant Man. The real Elephant man staring at me through the hole in the hessian sack, and Jacko thinks he's got the bones, Ha!

all three of the dead movies are incredible, i love them all. and if you really want depressing, watch requiem for a dream. damn, but if that isn't the most depressing movie ever. and, tops, i also enjoyed t3, saw it on the plane on the way to kcIII. alien is my second fav trilogy, after the REAL star wars movies. oh, and the soon to be tlor trilogy. evil dead trilogy is up there as well.

ummm... T3 was watchable, wasn't the worst film I have seen, though I would have liked a bit more story line than endless car chases!

Also wanted to hurl the contents of my stomach at Claire Danes, for being a piss poor actor, and annoying bint at that. Didn't understand the fact that the guy who played John was very good at the role... then there was Claire Danes (shudders).

Anyway I still prefer the other two. T2 will allways be my favourite, but we'll see what the next Terminator film will be like.

Botch, I somehow forgot this string of posts. I finally did watch Donnie Darko and I liked it very much.

You could really look at it a couple different ways, and either way you look at it, it makes you think and thats always a good thing isn't it?

I thought the Quadrilogy was great. I loved the original concept for alien 3. Very unusual, what do other people think. The effects for 3 were the weakest of all the films though. The puppet superimposed just didn't work. I know we've been spoiled by films like LOTR but aliens still works now. I would of thought they could of digitally balanced those effects, as this is a definitive collection.

I was happy enough with Alien 3, it's a great film and the idea behind it is great. It's not alien, no, but in my eyes it's the better of the sequels, if only for bringing us the suspense back:) Fincher is a truly awesome director, and I don't think he's scratched the surface yet.

Just watched Pirates of the Caribbean, saw it with youngsters over xmas - cracking film, and much funnier without the young ones:)

The Ginger Wookie
January 25th, 2004, 02:42 AM
Did you see the original idea on the extras disc. about the wooden planet. Went deeply into the idea of the alien as the devil. The planet was being run my monks. There was a scene where the monks get dragged down through their latrines. It just sounded so original. Plus there was going to be some cool Hieronymous Bosch dream imagery. I liked 3, don't get me wrong, but as usual interesting ideas were jettisoned by the studio bods. Yet to see Pirates of the Carribbean, although I can borrow a copy. Does it have swords in?

topol_sheap
January 25th, 2004, 09:53 AM
yes it has swords in it - it's got pirates, and a pirate without a sword is like a tapestry maker wihout some tapestry to make.

Not got round to watching the crazy amount of extras on the quadrilogy yet... haven't seen all the films either, just too much to do. BUt I did manage to see Alien Ressurection again - mainly to see if it was a bad as I remember, and I was pleasantly surprised by the new cut (well ending apart). It's a lot more gruesome than I remember. Or could it be that cut?

As for the Alien Director's Cut, I saw that at the cinema very recently, and it was great, want to see it on dvd, but perhaps it's just too soon to go there!

I watched Scooby Doo the movie the other night, I've heard lots of bad stuff about it but if you consider that it's taken from a cartoon, therefore not supposed to be serious and you also consider that it has Rowan Atkinson in it, therefore not to be taken serious it's actually pretty good.

They've managed to find someone who sounds just like Shaggy and the way that Scooby Doo and a lot of the background was put in was incredible, I didn't realise at all that a lot of the background stuff wasn't really there.

Just watched City of God. I've a strong feeling this is going to reside in my all time top 5 films for a long time. A fantastic, masterful film, beautifully told. Disturbing in the extreme, as its based on a truth which according to the attached documentary is worse by far than the film. Absolutely blew me away. I've decided Hollywood is too flabby and needs to be put on a health farm if it's gonna compete with the lean, mean filmakers coming out of the rest of the world. In a word an almost perfect film.
