Since the news of the forthcoming Necroscope game was revealed, I've been wondering how well a video game would convey 'horror'. The millions of players of first person shooters are by now numbed to the sight of bodies in pieces, burning corpses and blood streaked walls.

Such visceral scenes in games no longer convey 'horror' - they have become...mundane.

With these thoughts circling in my head, I was concerned for the 'horror' element of a Necroscope game...

Until, that is, I played the recent release 'Undying'. Sure, its got its share of bodies and ghastly stuff - but its the tension that the game creates that pushes its 'horror' edge to me. Some moments in the game actually had me tense - frightened, even.

I can't remember the last time that a game scared me, or made me jump like that.

If the Necroscope game can carry anything like a similar level of tension, my concerns are gone smile.gif

Have any of you played 'Undying'? What did you think? Have any other games ever made your skin creep?

this game is fairly old..but the first Alone in the Dark, was pretty cool and scary when it came out, if you could ever figure out how to beat the creatures!

7th Guest was a creepy older game, just enough suspense to keep you on the edge of your chair while playing - and looking behind you...

another shortly after that was StoneKeep, I think....the levels were many and I never did get through them all - but it seemed more a kid's game - but scary in it's own right...and hell - I'm still a kid, right? smile.gif

Oks - just a tad off topic...but recently I played the rather hyped (but generally enjoyable) Max Payne. Its an action game, with a rather decent, strong storyline.

***I should point out there are No Spoilers here***

That aside - there are some sequences in the game (especially later on) which were downright disturbing! Don't get me wrong - they were essential to the plot, and it was good to see the use of images and story in this way.

In short - I found aspects of the Max Payne story to be nothing short of 'Horror'.

Worth a look if you like intense action, and an immersive story.

Black and White is a rather large part of the reason why I'll be getting a PC soon! Really looking forward to it, have heard loads of good things about it!

But as for creepy games.... call me a wuss if you like, but when I first got the Alien trilogy on PSX, all those years ago, I very quickly learned not to play it in the dark... not when you have a cat come creeping up on you... it really freaked me out!

back on the topic of scary games:

i tried out the AVP2 demo last night.

You get to play at a marine on lv426, very atmospheric, very dark and very scary. manages to capture the fear and scare elements of the Aliens film very well.

the level is a walk through, doing a scan of the habitat area of the base. at a few points i really got scared, what with aliens leaping out of the darkness. got the heart rate up really high. the bleep bleep of the motion detector and the tell tale blips showing aliens really put the frighteners on me. ended up hiding behind crates like a little frightened boy.

its a must for any fps fan, down load it now and remember...

in space no one can hear you scream...

turn the lights out and play it in the dark with the sound turned up, go on i dare you...

i just cant wait for this to come out. looks amazing.
