Just started reading this. I love it already, it's kinda sad to know the next one is the end of the whole series.
Been quite silent for the last month or two. What do people think of the new installment in the series?

Just started it myself. Yeah it's fantastic, only about 100 pages through. Picks off straight where wolves left off. It's a totally amazing story. I don't want it to end yet can't wait for it's conclusion. Please Mr King don't blow it at this stage.
I must admit I've introduced 2 or 3 people to this in the last year. Every single one of them are addicts now. I think this storys sucess has grown mostly from one person telling another. It almost has nothing to do with Stephen King being the author. I think he admits this is bigger than himself. This is going to be a Lord of the Rings phenomenon, as long as he holds it together now till the end. One of the all time great fantasy stories. God I'm sounding like a geek. grin.gif

I've got several things to say on this... but I'm gonna wait till y'all are finished so I don't spoil anything for you or give you any preconceived perceptions one way or the other.

well, you have to wait for me as I still have a way to go until I get to Susannah... I'm guessing it wont be until after I move before I get to Wolves... we'll see, we'll see.
One serious question though, and i don't know if anyone else has noticed this... all the way through the Gunslinger, Roland says "yar" lots (much like my friend Dan), and then in book 2, 3 and so far he book 4, he's not said it once, although a couple of others have said it a couple of times (esp Wizard and Glass). Can anyone shed some light on this?

Well first of all, Tops, the world has moved on. Keep that in mind as it's blamed for many strange changes throughout the series.
Also keep in mind that the world moved on while the gunslinger slept the sleep of centuries following his chat with the man in black at the end of The Gunslinger. That's something that isn't made very clear in the beginning. Even Roland doesn't know how old he actually is or how long he slept.
Tell me, did you read the edition of The Gunslinger that was revised recently, or the original version? Although I like the disjointed feel of the original (it was, after all, written as a serial of five continuing stories for a magazine), a read of the revised version made more sense and was more in keeping with the rest of the series.
I'm really glad you're enjoying it!

I got the revised edition, and I guess you're right about the world moving on, but for Roland's speech to changes that dramatically is hard to believe, so I'll have to believe it had something to do with the lobstrosities.

Heehee... you'll soon see that several manners of speech are adopted by the ka-tet throughout their travels...

Well just finished this.
GODDAMN YOU KING HOW DARE YOU LEAVE ME HANGING LIKE THIS.
This is stunning. I loved it and the gloomy ending feel. I'm genuinely scared for what's going to happen. One, the end of the series, and secondly the fact SK is more than happy to kill off great characters. reading Kings coda you get the feelings he's scared for them too. As he says this thing is writing itself. i feel smaked around, in a good way of course. King's own appearance in this as a character was also very well handled. it could of been a big dissapointment
Is the Dixie Pig, Thunderclap in this world? It seems to be by the preponderance of vampires and even worse nasties. Boy I loved it.
well this baby is still suprising me. I don't want to say good bye to these guys. But all good things.... :(

I should stay well away from this thread... currently reading Wolves of the Calla ;) Can't wait to get to the next one.
So far my favourites of the series are
The Drawing of the Three
Wizard and Glass
Both classics.

I don't intend to give anything away. just little teasers maybe. I'm not sure how he's gonna rap this thing up however. One of the best reading experiences of my life. This and Necroscope. I must indulge in more series. But I've been spoiled so far.
Good recommendation. if you like ongoing stories/series you could do worse than John Conneleys Charlie Bird books. Starts with every dead thing. it's gruesome murder mystery but with a major slice of the supernatural, and great characters, good and bad. Plus Charlie Bird the Detective Hero is something of a necroscope, in that the dead help him along. Great stuff. I definitely recommend it for horror fans too. There's plenty to send shivers down the spine.

you want some other good series?
You could try the Adversary Cycle by F Paul Wilson, and the Repairman Jack sereis by the same author... RMJ isn't finished yet, but it starts and ends with the Adversary cycle.

I've read a couple of these but out of order. The Keep and what I think is the final one. But yeah they were good. Must try and get the rest.
