View Full Version : Server Move

Just a quick note to let everyone know - we will be moving the site to a new server today or tomorrow and the site may be down. I am going to do my best to make sure all messages are kept and current, but if any of you remember a few years back when we did this, there was a bit of a delay in posting since the permissions needed reset, so please bear with me as I get this changeover done.
This move is giving us more space and will also allow us to move to a new database driven board later in the year.

Looks like everything went as planned and we only had very limited downtime. Eveyone's profiles and settings should still be the same, but please check them out to be sure and let me know if there were any issues.
If there is any major problems, we might have to revert back to the backup I have which was current as of this afternoon - but hopefully that won't be an issue.
let me know what you all think of the functions and whether or not this server seems or is any faster.

Tops, you seem to be the only geezer visiting. We have spoken before! Remember Clancy Brown. Where the hell is everyone? This is such a better server. A damned site (sic) better than the one I'm using here at work. This MS thing is soooooooo slow. it's like wading through a bucket of tar with Deep Sea Diving boots on!! Man, the drudge! Still it is friday, and i get to see The Lady Mel tonite and we can go out and in to play. Am I as mad as a box of frogs. Oh yes - you'd better believe it!!! grin.gif tongue.gif

I find it hard to believe I have only two other geeks on here that care about this... I mean - c'mon, this was pretty sweet, a huge increase in size: 250MB of storage to 750MB; A smooth transition: no one seems to have lost their posts or profiles or ANY topics on the Board and it happened within a 12 hour span of the start of the move; And back to the size thing - well, there were 2-3 times in the past 6 months where the size of the Board was actually cutting into our server space and I had to get rid of some older tech topics because I couldn't run maintenance on the board because we had no spare room for temp files. Ok, I know..as long as you all show up and it works - who cares about that stuff? tongue.gif Ah well... The end result is the same - we're on a better setup and we can move to a better board later this year after i figure out one i am happy with. Ah.. speaking of that - another topic idea...

Oh well, ignorance is bliss. I'm going to the pub - COS I CAN  - it's my half day. With the good Lady Mel of course. Maybe someone will spring a surprise and carry on this discussion over the weekend. blush.gif Cheers Guys & Gals.

*shrugs*
Wasn't having problems before so.....
But that is a pretty big leap in a short amount of time. I've been on boards where smaller 'upgrades' (which turned out worse than before) took longer.
Props

Heh heh the Wolfie knows by now (surely..lol, after what 6 years?) that this gal thinks he is the best webmaster around and so full confidence in whatever he decides to do here is always given, even if it seems silent!

As usual it's all mumbo-jumbo to me too!
Hey Shadoe, now that there's more "space" you should create two separate threads for stuph like this...
Just make the one for people like me say something like, "board'll be down for awhile... be faster when it comes back up (ya stoopid gits)."

Quick update - might be jumping servers again - this one has an older version of MySQL on it and it won't run the new MB we are planning on going with.. soo.... maybe another day or so of no posting...

Dave, I can't post in the retreat... something about abnormal permissions on the cdi file... probably more than likely they forgot to chmod something....

I was able to post. Try again. It might not show up immediately as I had the board's cache cleared.

Ok - A few of the thread files were chmoded wrong - I got those fixed and now all should be good. It was weird - only the last two or three posts in each forum were wrong...who knows.

This may just be a test, but since the update, I can not post. If it goes through, well..........never mind my rambling!

Everyone's posts are showing up - but they might be delayed in your browser. I had to clear the board's stored pages as well as rebuild all the metadata, which could have affected how things show up in your browser.
Does this make sense? If not, well, just give it a few days, or go into your profile and reset the cookies and new post indicators - might help as well. Probably not, but I'm not happy with how this last move went down, so you all know. I am trying to make the best of it though. It's all for the best in the future, trust me.

Like I said, forget my ramblings. Things are much faster now and I have no difficulty posting. Whatever I did in re-setting worked. Thanks for the advise Shadoe.
