Doggedly trying to finish Lord of the Rings. I'm now about 1/3 of the way through The Return of the King. The hardest part is the book weight. I have yet to figure out a good way to read the darned thing without holding it or having it lie on some part of my body. I have to stop every 10 minutes and rest. I think maybe this is what e-books were made for . . . . nah! smile.gif

I wanted to read the book(s) before seeing the first movie in December. However, now I'm afraid I'll be in a comparing mode and usually the book wins out in those contests. I just hope the movie doesn't disappoint. :(

Chaosium has put out a series of trade-paperback books that are collections of Cthulhu mythos stories by different authors. There's something like 30 of them now. I've decided to cycle through them again, beginning with #1: The Hastur Cycle and moving on through the last one I currently possess which is #19: The Nyarlathotep Cycle. #14, my personal favourite, is called Singers Of Strange Songs, A Celebration of Brian Lumley. It has the shorts 'City Out Of Time', 'Cement Surroundings' and 'Spaghetti' by the Master, and eight other stories by writers influenced by him. Great stuff for fans of H.P. Lovecraft AND Brian Lumley, and that's me!

I'm currently adrift...

Having recently finished (for the first time) Stephen King's Dark Tower series, I'm waiting for a couple of books to arrive - James Herbert's 'Others', and Bruce Sterling's 'Schismatrix Plus'.

So I am in that awful position of having 'nothing to read'.

Sith - I know well the Chaosium books of which you speak - my faves have to be the Robert Bloch 'Mysteries of the Worm' and 'Singers'. I've only got about seven of them, but they are good stuff for fans of HPL like myself. smile.gif

I'm just finishing The Spear by James Herbert.

I've been off work for the past 3 weeks on the old "Pat and Mick" and I've been blitzing through my reading back log.

wehey Jase, looks like you were Toms next victim for Harry Potter. A good decision, one that you certainly wont regret... IMHO these books are the finest. at least now if you start reading them, you wont have a confused look on your face when Tom and myself prattle on about them in detail in 2 weeks time.

Anyone who aspires to write, whether a fan of the King or not, should check out On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft.

It's not your normal "how to" book; anal, redundant, and boring. It's very insightful and an interesting read...especially if you are a fan.

It has some very useful tips and inspirational stories. Plus it's short and sweet. smile.gif

I think now I'm gonna jump on the band-wagon and finish up the Harry Potter books...part 3.

Oh btw...I Am Legend was a very good read, but it left me a little depressed. It sure wasn't what I expected...

im currently half way through the new Terry Pratchett book: "the amazing maurice and his educated rodents". which despite being a kids book (well aimed at 8+ market). it is really funny, im sure most of the jokes and underlying story will be missed by the kids. Certainly ive never considered the possibility of taking perhaps the greatest scifi film (aliens) and mixing it up with the oldest fable (pied piper of hamlin)..

well pratchett did and it certainly works... smile.gif

I freely admit that I was very unsure about these so-called 'kids books'.

However.
As so many before me have said, the books are just plain bloody great. Don't ask me why ! Something very soft and cuddly about the whole thing, I think.

My advice. Don't hesitate. Read them !

So thanks to Jase, Vavara, Tops and VonD, for the recommendation smile.gif

I have been hearing about this Kim Newman for a long time from you guys. I've never read anything by her (him?) except short stories in collections bought for the Lumley stories.

Can someone give me the best place to start on her (his?) novels? Are they serials?

Nate,

I started my Kim Newman off with the collection Seven Stars, and then quickly moved on to The Quorum. Most people would recommend Anno Dracula, but it's taken me 18mnths to get it.... mainly because I am lazy... I would recommend (in no order)
Seven Stars
The Quorum
Bad Dreams
The Nightmayor
Where the Bodies are Buried
Life's Lottery (funky choose your opwn adventure!)

I have waiting at home the Anno Dracula books 2 and 3, and am waiting on delivery of number 1... then I'll be reading them faster than you can say cat. I also have Jago to read....

As you'll know quite a lot of his stuff has been anthologised (is that the right word?)...

Tops.

Ps. Reading the Keep by F. Paul Wilson at the moment, which is a really good book...

VonDarkmoor
November 7th, 2001, 07:19 PM
N8 to agree with tom, start with anno dracula. if you get on with this its a good indicator to continue with his others. as myself / tom and a few others have said the books are hard to find. But u can probably get them on abe etc.

ive currently only read "anno dracula", im on for reading the sequel "the bloody red baron". However whilst waiting for it the 2nd too arrive ive been dipping into the 3rd on occassion.

whats really good about them is the alternative history line and of the course the tenacity of the vampire...

Im glad your enjoying HP, just wait until you start the 4th one its the best so far.

Except for the HC's I got from the UK, I do have them off and put in my photo album as they were sent by two good friends! :)

Anyhoo, finished Sorcerer's Stone, well, it is a childrens book lol, and the copy I have is a US version, so it doesn't have the UK way of spelling as I had hoped. Hopefully the movie will be better as I doubt very much I will spend the money on the rest of the series.

Finished 'The Winter King' by Bernard Cornwell (have to get the 2 others in the series!), I must say, interesting book and I did enjoy it, but if anyone else prepares to indulge, just throw out whatever vision you have had for Arthur, Camelot, Lancelot, etc. Because if you have that vision in your head of Knights in Shining Armor & Damsels in Distress, you will be sorely mistaken.

Very good read for those who want to get into the more 'real' days of Britons & Saxons...Wars & Warlords.

a note worthy update:

still reading "the bloody red baron" at lunchtimes when i can.

started reading yesterday evening and finished something like 8 times before starting all over again... odd you may think... its another Kim Newman book called "lifes lottery", kind of adult choose your own adventure book... wierd i hear you cry... if you recall those "fighting fantasy books" of yesteryear.. rolling dice and fighting monsters etc. well its kind of like that but with out the dices and a lot more juicy....

IMHO you dont really need to be a Newman fan to read this, i think it would probably would appeal to anyone whos got more curiosity than they wish they had. Like lifes little events everything has a cause and effect.

a must read...

Having had plenty of festive leave, I tackled the following books over the holiday.

“The last hero” by terry pratchett, nice pictures and a great story. Had some old characters and new ones, plus some of the greatest views of discworld from the moon.

“the honoured enemy” by ray fiest and another chap. Very good and about time we went back to the riftwar. A must read for all fans of the riftwar saga. However I wouldn’t venture into it unless you have read all the riftwar books first, it assumes you know about the series already.

“the northern lights” Phillip Pullman (dark materials trilogy part 1)
“the subtle knife” Phillip Pullman (dark materials trilogy part 2)

These 2 books a probably the best books have read since reading the Harry Potter series. If you like LOTR, CS Lewis, then read the “dark materials” its one of the most original books that I have read in ages.

Im currently on book 3 of the trilogy called “the amber spyglass”, which I can only say is utterly fantastic and better then the previous ones.

I am currently reading another Florida based satire/mystery. This one is by Tim Dorsey called "Hammerhead Ranch Motel". It is a little dis-jointed at times, but it pokes fun drug dealers, psychopaths, tourists, land developers, flea bag hotels, bigots, politicians and television newsmen; all under the shadow of a hurricane. If you like funny books... you'll probably like this one.

Ok - so it's been a while, but since last time I've read:

"The Door into Summer" by Robert Heinlein - nice, fuzzy sci-fi.
"The Alien Years" and "The Tower of Glass" by Robert Silverburg - really good intelligent stuff - I may well be making more room on my shelves for this fella's books.
"Whit" by Iain Banks. Another fantastic trip into the Bank's Hall of Mirrors. Excellent stuff.

There's probably more...but I'm damned if I can remember.

A question for Tops too. "From Hell"? Is it worth the £25 price tag that I saw this week. It looks damn interesting, but I couldn't shell out that kind of money on a feeling...

Get it on amazon.co.uk for £17.50... I thought that the £25 price tag was excessive, but if you've read any alan moore stuff and enjoyed it, then you wont be in bad company. I haven;t finished it yet... it's long, and I am reading some technical books as well and Khai... but what I've read so far is amazing, and the art really suits that era of London... it kind of reminds me of Anno Dracula, although with out Dracula...

Then - shock of shocks - I read something without vampires, or Hideous Alien Gods from Beyond. No magic, no ghoulies or ghosties. It was something of a change of pace for me, I can tell you.
I read Mario Puzo's "The Godfather", and I can't recommend it enough. Really easy read, and a definate "can't put down".

If this post upsets anyone, I will appologise now but......I have just attempted to read Peter Straub's Floating Dragon....what a load of c**p, I had to give up a quater way through, which I hate to do, but I couldn't stand it any longer. The basic story line was Okay, but all the chopping and changing from one family to another over the years bored me witless. Once again sorry to all you people who like Straub, but he's not for me :(

On a brighter note I am now half way through Dagons Bell, aaarrrrggghhhhh now thats more like it :D

Nathan
February 20th, 2002, 05:37 PM
Yup. Straub can be a very boring author.

Even on his collaberations with King you can tell which parts he wrote by how disjointed and rambling they are... of course in Black House they say they took on each other's writing style to throw readers off...

My question is, if Straub can write like King on command, why doesn't he do it all the time? Maybe then he wouldn't need King to help boost his career.

I said in another thread that I'm reading Koontz' new one, One Door Away from Heaven. It's typical but still good.

Beautiful 28 year old woman with problems.

Young handicapped girl with major problems.

A motherless boy on the run from some unseen predator.

A private detective caught up in it all who will most likely fall for the woman and together (after escaping their horrible fates) they will raise the girl as their own.

And of course, the obligatory smarter-than-average dog.
