Yeh I did buy the revised edition .... I have the release date for number 5 as 4 November -- the reissuse of Wastelands is due out later this month with The Wizard and the Glass is out early October --- are the release dates different in the USA to Britain? I was hoping to time it quite well but now ain't too sure.....

The limited hardcover edition can be ordered directly from Grant (the publisher) and received by around mid-September.
I don't know if the general public can order yet, but if you bought a copy of Wizard & Glass from them years ago they'll sell you Wolves of the Calla.
I think the deadline for the 'prefered customers' has passed though.

Had to put Imajica back on the shelf as I was losing the will to live, so just started Northern Lights by Philip Pullman. Bit confused at first as I thought it was about the Blackpool illuminations.

I managed to get through the last few pages of imajica the other day - very pleased, but it felt like I had run a marathon... as someone said to me before I finished "I bet you wish every sentence is the last"... I wished it... way too long. not bad though... I should have bought the 2 book edition, and that way I might have been better off with it.
Now back to Vampire World for the first time in ? years.
Later,

Think I'm the freak who loved every moment of Imajica, I was really sad when it ended :( . But I guess we all have different tastes. I'm re-reading The lost years at the moment, haven't got far though as I should be writing so I'm limiting myself.
I really want the psychomech (sp) series  it's unbearable the agony of waiting

A couple of years ago I paid dearly for the graphic novel version of Rawhead Rex... quite worth it, though, when you see the look on people's faces upon perusing it!
Probably one of the most graphic of graphic novels... the center page is a double depicting Rex reclining on the ground with a partially eaten body at his side, eating entrails like spaghetti!

Well my copy of Khai of Ancient Khem came and it was in surprisingly top nick for a 23 yr old book, just a bit of discolouration to the pages, other than that it's perfect.
As for what I thought of it I don't think I could say without doing it a huge injustice, I could probably write entire essays on it and still not convey how awesomely magnificent a story it was, loved it loved it loved it.
Now my number one Brian book, even above Necroscope which I would normally consider a sacrilege if it wasn't by the same author.
If they were to ever make a movie of any of Brian's works this would be the one I would choose above all others, CLASSIC.
Sorry A1 wont be purchasing the hard back Khai now as I'm very happy with my copy smile.gif

Anno Dracula is indeed excellent, I prefer it to the later stories because of the Victorian setting, and use of popular characters of the period.
Haven't read The Bloody Red Baron as yet as both are out of print and I don't know anyone who can lend me a copy (or do I? ;) )
Has anyone been on one of 'The Ripper' walks around the capital and are they to be recommended?

The Great and Secret Show is (IMO) the best Barker book out there. Its sequel, Everville, is a bit of a let-down though.
As for American Gods, it's a decent enough book, I just couldn't get past his terrible language skills.

The great and Secret Show is awesome. As N8 said Everville is a bit pants, but not bad (we can expect the third and final part of this in about 2010).
In my opinion the best Barker book I have read (I've not read them all yet) is Weaveworld.
Currently I'm reading Northern Lights by Philip Pullman (which is going to be a classic - thanks Py and Black for pushing me on this), and LOTR FOTR. i've decided, while reading wolves of the calla, that stephen king doesn't write the dark towers. when you read It or christine or regular king books, you can almost see and hear the stephen king voice or essence or what have you. when you read the tower books, it's like a completely different person. don't get me wrong, i know he wrote them, but it's like he's some one else when he does. maybe the crimson king.
The Ginger Wookie
January 10th, 2004, 01:28 AM
Yeah Botch I agree. Either that or hes going mad. I think his concept for the Dark Tower is unlike anything I've read before. Plus the way it seems to be invading all his other works. It's amazing. It's really is like watching a Universe be born. An awesome look into the mind of a great writer. Rather intimidating though.

Very astute observation there.
There is a lot of speculation running around that SK is the Crimson King, sitting high atop The Tower. It has already been given away that he will put in an appearance in upcoming installments, we just don't know exactly what capacity it will be that he appears.

It was a little unsatisfactory at the end as loads of huge chunks were left hanging and unexplained, but I was placated by the fact that on scouring the internet I discovered Mr Barker has the 3rd and final book of the Art in the pipeline, and it's supposed be a monster of a book. Silmirillion is worth reading, in someways its better than the Hobbit and the Lord of Rings, in other places it isn't. It has multiple story lines going on at the same time from several different charcters, well quite a few different characters, view points. It has a few characters from Lord of the rings in, but I'm not telling you who, that would be no fun smile.gif
Haven't read the Unfinished tales though, though I want to.

Sophie Sophie, when you get into the Wheel of time, we will have to discuss your thoughts. I have some thoughts on that series and don't want to express them until you are in and hooked. Oh yeah, if you like the Wheel of Time you most definately need to read the Song of Fire and Ice series by George R.R. Martin, in my opinion it is far superior to the Wheel series.

Sophie, when you get into the Wheel of time, we will have to discuss your thoughts. I have some thoughts on that series and don't want to express them until you are in and hooked. Oh yeah, if you like the Wheel of Time you most definately need to read the Song of Fire and Ice series by George R.R. Martin, in my opinion it is far superior to the Wheel series. [/QB]ok, when I get one or two books in, I'll message ya. I allways give a series the first three books a read before either dismissing it or reading on. I'll tell the bf about the other series you mentioned.

Sophie I love the Wheel of Time it's a fantastic series and I found myself compulsively buying the next book when it came out, until now and they seem a long time in comming. It does piss me off somewhat though when they change the covers part way through the series, most irritating!

Finished Psychomech, Hero of Dreams and House of Doors over the last two months.
I loved Psychomech, and I'm really curious to see what will happen in the next two.
I liked Hero of Dreams which the lovely GG bought me for Christams, but not as much as Psychomech. I found it took me a long time to get into it, though I do want to read the next ones in that series. How many are there in the Hero and Eldin series?
The House of doors was great as well, I liked one a lot as well.
Just slowly making my way through the First of the wheel of time books, haven't had much time lately to read it though.

Sophie - You should really enjoy Psychamok. I thought it was the best of the three. Psychosphere seemed a bit of a connector as opposed to a story of its own, but that's generally the way with those "tweener" books. The Last Aerie is one of the few exceptions to that rule that I've found.
The first time I read the Hero books I was taking them too seriously and didn't enjoy them as much as I have in subsequent readings. Go into them like you're reading an adventure serial or even a comic book.
To me, Hero and Eldin are Lumley's tongue in cheek, over-the-top super hero type guys. It's really very entertaining when you look at 'em like that.
As for my own reading lately, I've been catching up on my Koontz (for some reason I don't read his when they're released anymore... he's getting a little weak. :( ), and just started my second readof the Tarra Khash stories.

Well since I have been unable to get Vampyhrric Rites by Simon Clark because it is unavailable right now in the states, and becasue I have been unable to find anything else that tickles my fancy right now, I'm picking up my copy of Swan Song by Robert McCammon.
I read this book back in 1987 and remmebed that I enjoyed in better than The Stand by Steven King so I figured I'd give it a go again after 17 years. grin.gif

Mccammons They Thirst is a great epic vampire story. the opening chapter is a real chiller. Imagine Salems Lot transposed to Los Angeles and you get the idea. You must all read this, it rocks. And it's pretty damn scary.
One of the humans uses a hair spray flame thrower on a vampire. I'd first read it when I was about 14. I thought that idea was great and decided to recreate it in the bathroom. LOL I burnt my mums bathroom curtains down. I packed a bag and prepared to leave home. Was I bollocked!! too right. blush.gif blush.gif blush.gif

I hope my old tattered version of They Thirst is still around then, if it's out of print.

But that was before I'd read Wizard and Glass... with all the tie-ins to the latter DT books, Insomnia now makes much more sense...

Agree with nathan. I picked up insomnia on an off chance. It's rare I read any Stephen king books outside of the Dark Tower series, and the Talisman (which was co written but anyway). Luckily I read insomnia after I read up to the Wizard and the Glass, and yes it would not be so great if you don't know the interlocking plot from the DT series. On it's own it's not fantastic, average, but with all those little DT references it makes it a hell of lot more enjoyable. I allways remember the boy with his picture from insomnia... but yeah not giving anything away tongue.gif
