Everything else seemed to be getting updated to the new year so I thought I would do the same with the film thread. :)

Nothing really exciting out there right now in the theater, but this summer I have to say I'm looking forward to some sequels: Fantastic Four, Spider Man, Pirates, and you can't forget Hostel. hard to imagine they can make another one and have it be worse than the first, but I'm looking forward to it.

How about everyone else? DVD releases you're looking forward to this year or anything else I haven't mentioned or don't know about?

Well. Just finished reading Hannibal Rising and allegedly there's a film due out at the end of Feb, so am tentatively looking forward to that. Apart from that, I expect there'll be too much drivel and not enough style - as usual. Ever the optimist.

is the book any good - I've seen a trailer for hannibal rising... I didn't like the book or the film hannibal mind you.

as for films, last one I saw was Lion King on dvd - I love that film - seriously.

was going to see Rocky the other day, but fiancee (sp? she's a she) had a migraine so we didn't go.

looking forward to spiderman and 300 right now. I'll see pirates 3, but only for completeness - didn't really enjoy pirates 2 enough to care if you know what I mean...

anything else on the horizon? don't know... although if asking about dvd, I finished the buffy/angel 9 month marathon - could have been so much better... currently in the middle of BSG series 2 (not strictly films, but they are dvd ;) )

I know what you mean about Pirates - The first one was a complete story while it was very obvious that the second was filmed at the same time as the third, leaving you needing to see the third to feel like you finished the story from the second. Much, unfortunately, like the Matrix second and third installments.

As for Buffy and Angel, Best Buy over here was having a blowout with each season only costing $19.99 on DVD. Amber went a little crazy and bought all of Angel and is getting ready to start in on them - I don't think she will be waiting for me though! :D

Angel was only a bust because the feckers canceld it half way through and they just bodged the end......bast*rds!!!

Wanted to see a new film version of Buffy and Angel one that would finish it properly and see Angel being redeemed and ending up with the Buffster....I'm welling up just thinking about it :(

Always thought I would end up with the Buffster... but then she got all scrawny in season 7 - not enough meat on her bones. :p Is this off-topic? heh heh

I think because there is mention of a film in there that although it isn't to be made it's still a film in essence and therefore we are still on topic so in essence no....yes.......oh I dont know anymore!!!!!!!
We were on topic and then off it but I'm sure we'll find are way back home in time for supper Toto we just gotta keep on trucking.....

Cannnnnn't wait for Spidey3 though, I loved the Venom storylines from the comics and cartoons...........and yes I still wear my Spiderman PJ's too bed :o

I like the idea of an Angel film for closure though ;)

Tops, the book was very well researched and I think is on a par with 'Lambs'. It gets to the very essence of how he became what he did. I won't throw any spoilers though. Read it. You might enjoy this one, as opposed to Hannibal.

Shame on you Tom, scaring all the kiddies like that!

Hanniabal the book was good till the end and the film was pap!

Can't be assed with Hanibal Rising though as I think they covered his formative years enough in Hanibal...plus it's all just a cash in, Hanibal Lector was a great bit part in 2 great books Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs, he was also good in the films SOTL and Manhunter (much better than the new version Red Dragon IMHO)

But they cheapened and diluted his appeal for me by making him the main focus

...and 300 right now.

Tom, I read the book The Spartan by Valerio Massimo Manfredi (based on Leonidas and the 300 warriors (plus 6500 some odd allies but they held for the end) for the fight against the Persians), although I don't think the movie itself is based on that particular book, I hope it's close to being as good.

Anyhoo, if you ever get a chance, read that book and his Alexander series as well. Myself I am also looking forward to seeing 300.

I can't wait for 300!!

I seen the original film when I was but A young lad and it always stuck with me as one of my favorite movies.
As I type I will write down the author and title of the above mentioned book and will attempt to find, buy and read.

The film (300) is based on the 300 comic book by Frank Miller - he was responsible for Sin City. I love the work of Frank Miller, and his work does lend itself very nicely to the big screen.

If you haven't read 300 I recommend giving it a try... I believe it was based on the book you mention Ema (Leonidas and the 300). :)

Not many up-and-coming films grabbing my interest at the mo, with the exception of Hostel 2, whenever that may be. Watched another Eli Roth film at the weekend, 2001 Maniacs, starring Robert Englund. Sick and funny, my kinda film!

Otherwise on DVD, I really enjoyed the TV series Carnivale... well worth watching, even if it only ran for 2 seasons. And am currently waiting for more series of King of the Hill to come out. GIVE ME MORE!!!!!

I am eagerly awaiting Hanibal Rising, I have to say the book was great, very touching and it went into much greater detail about his formative years than any other book, can almost sympathise with what he did in later years!

As for Buffy, I finished collecting those a while ago and they rock, I want to get Angel in DVD too but I won't be able to afford them for a while being on maternity leave shortly!

I am really obsessing about vietnam war films at the mo, not sure why but I am loving Platoon, We were Soldiers, Casualties of War and my father has leant me some more to watch.

There is a new Sarah Michelle Gellar Film due out this year but I can't for the life of me remember the title just now!

I think the title is The Return, and it looks like the Grudge with a twist, but I've only seen the trailer so I can't say for sure. :)

Every review I've read about Hannibal Rising has been absolutely dire. I don't generally pay much heed to reviews, but when they're all so damning I might be persuaded to give it a miss!

On the other hand, I can't wait to see the latest offering from Simon Pegg, Hot Fuzz... hoping my peepers will be up to staring at a cinema screen this weekend!

The return does actually look quite good, Hannibal rising the book was definitley better then Hannibal but I don't think I could sit stilll long enough to watch the film esp since reviews are not good!!

I watched Shaun of the dead for about the millionth time over the weekend and I so cannot wait to see Hot Fuzz but again I don't think I can sit still long enough in a cinema without needing to go to the loo!!!!

Simon Pegg makes me laugh so much I think everything he does is pure gold!!!!!

How are your eyes now GG?? Everything okay with you honey???

My eyes are great Sue honey, healing really well... how's your belly *grin*

Still haven't been to see Hot Fuzz yet, though more because I'm broke than because of my eyes (serves me right for buying a £1000 new drum kit :()

Saw a hilarious film on DVD last week... Evil Aliens, a very cheesy horror/sci-fi film. I never thought I'd EVER watch a horror film with music by The Wurzels, but there ya go...!

not impressed

just wasn't as funny as Shaun of the Dead, which is somehting I was worried about.

Some very amusing bits, but most of those were in the trailer!

SOTD. Top film. I'll never look at a Dire Straits album again without wanting to hurl it across the back garden.

Just seen The Departed. Should've been called The Deported. Nuff said. Scorsese deserved the oscar for Goodfellas, not this crap. :(

Did anyone else go and see Hot Fuzz? I haven't seen it yet but I've heard it's dissapointing from other people too, maybe it was hyped too much?

I'm also looking forward to Spiderman 3.

I've heard that someone is in the process of making a film of I am Legend, has anyone else heard this?

Chris Banks
March 9th, 2007, 09:08 AM
Am staying awat from Hot Fuzz. All I've heard is double negativity about it, so I guess a million lemmings can't be wrong, figuratively speaking, of course.

Sharon - I am Legend. Not heard that news but sounds VERY interesting. Shall try & investigate & let the board know more if I find owt out!!! .

Not seen ANY of the Spidey films, so no comment. Am going to watch Borat this weekend though. Should be a laugh?:D

They've tried several times to do I am Legend Silv, the last time Will Smith was penciled in and Ang Lee was in the seat but it stalled and never made it too far...then some other foreign guy picked it up but then Francis Lawrence was appointed to the project and Will Smith was retained in the lead and there currently filming and it's due for release around the end of the year....

Cant wait for spidey3 and still want too see Hot Fuzz, Reckon people are dissapointed because Shaun was such a suprisingly good film and people expect the same kind of impact, which is impossible as your expecting it

Saw a snide copy of 300 in Caernarfon last night. Looks like I might have to go and see it 'properly' - at the flicks! (Hey, remember them??) It's all Spartans and Thermopylae. Great stuff - escapist to the max :D :D . Cheesy. I think Tops would love it, being Cheesemaster Generalissimo.

Read a review for it before I went on Sunday and it put me off, apparently it's the most stupid film of the year!!!

I didn't go...

Goth Girl

All the reviews I've read of 300 have been dreadful, but all my friends who have seen it say it's fab. Who to believe... a bunch of jaded film reviewers who have probably very different tastes to me, or a bunch of people I hang around with because we have very similar tastes? Hmmm!

Not that I have time to go to the cinema, guess this will be yet another that I won't get to see til DVD (maybe I'll have gotten through the 50 or so DVDs that I've yet to watch! Damn Final Fantasy!)

Hoping to watch Idiocracy on DVD soon, looks great!

Gah, I'm disappointed to hear Hot Fuzz not as good as Shaun of the Dead which is such an amazing film. My best friend and I are driving 2.5 hrs (one way) to see it next weekend when it's released here in the US.

Hmm, other movies to look forward to... Spidey 3, Shrek 3, Pirates 3 (am I seeing a pattern here?) and, ofcourse, Harry Potte 5.

As for Buffy, there is going to be a graphic novel for "Season 8" which will have the gang all back together.

I went to see 300 and thought it was fantastic. Cheesy, yes but in a good way. There was lots of humour in it as well as lots of gore and I thought it also managed to be quite moving in places.

buffy season 8 is a comic book. It's likely to run to about 30 issues, and should (hopefully) tie up some lose ends. Either way, it's quite amusing so far :D

I went to see Hot Fuzz today. It wasn't as funny as Shaun of the Dead, but then again I've seen more zombie movies than action movies, so I got more of the inside jokes. I still enjoyed myself and will be buying it when it's released on DVD. I wish Spaced was available on DVD for my region.

I think I'll give S3 a miss this time round. A mate of mine whose judgement is usually pretty spot on said it was too long and not as good as the first two!! :(

Helmet Head
May 9th, 2007, 02:58 PM
It wasn't the length that was the prob for me with spidey 3, it just had too much going on and the story line suffered.... I felt they tried to get 3 movies worth of stuff into it so they could close it off for good so they weren't committed to doing anymore.

But they just ended up with loads happening on screen and not a lot of story there, wasn't the best spidey and to be honest I just felt kind of let down by it as I expected it to be so much better...

topol_sheap

I didn't like the Venon or Sandman back stories - they sucked.
