Just a new thread to see who's watching what at the mo, filmwise... recent discoveries you wanna share, new purchases, recommendations etc!
Just bought a film I'm saving for the weekend, another Tartan Asia Extreme film! Yup, it takes Japanese gore and subtitles to really catch my interest at the moment!
This one is called The Happiness of the Katakuris... anyone seen it? Supposed to be a cross between The Sound of Music and Dawn of the Dead! The hills are alive with the sound of screaming...!

Not been watching too many films of late .... I got hold of a few David Attenbrough DVD boxsets a couple of months ago (Life on Earth, Trials of life etc etc) so when I've had a spare hour or so I've been working through those little treasures.....
I like the sound of the film you've mentioned GG... inspiring me to have a dvd gorefest soon...

I'm on a Bad Film vibe at the moment... Recently watched Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter (yup) and Buckaroo Banzai in the Eighth Dimension.
Oh and Ice Pirates (starring Robert Ulrich if you doubt its naffness from the title).
imdb anyone of them - I just can't get enough diabolically naff celluloid!

I,m not a big movie buff,I,m kind of disappointed in most films I see, but I still do enjoy a lot of them. Nothing comes to mind right now.
I would like to ask, maybe a stupid question,if any one saw the Evil Dead Series?

Buckaroo Banzai isn't that the one were the kids are playing a video game which is actually a recruiting device for some sort of space corps? Not that I've seen it, I'm just guessing!

EVIL DEAD??? EVIL DEAD??? EVIL DEAD??? EVIL DEAD??? EVIL DEAD??? EVIL DEAD??? EVIL DEAD??? EVIL DEAD??? EVIL DEAD??? EVIL DEAD??? EVIL DEAD???
yep... up there in my all time top 10. The second film is by far the best, and probably the best film ever made - I'm not kidding, but there aren't too many people out there who whould agree with this, but I know they couldn't disagree with the fact that there is nothing in that film that doesn't need to be there, and some of the slapstick is the best I have ever seen smile.gif

Rixy...
Bukaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension came out in 1984 and is something of a cult... It stars Peter Weller, Clancy Brown, Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow, Christopher Lloyd and a bunch of others...
The titular Banzai is a Rock Star/Neurosurgeon/Racing Driver/Theoretical Physicist/Sharp Shooter who figures out a way to make his car travel through solid rock via the 8th Dimension... Trouble is the 8th Dimension was a prison for an Alien Despot and his cronies and now they've escaped and the President (who's put his back out) needs Banzai to stop the despot escaping from Earth or else the people who put him in the 8th dimension will destroy the Earth and they only have 24 hours in which to do it!
*And Breath*
Worth watching once if only for some of the great lines. smile.gif

I've went and got the special edition of the original Universal Monster movies, Dracula, Frankenstien and the wolfman. Cool to watch them all over again. Heard that Universal will be coming out with a box set of Creature from the black lagoon, Invisible Man and the Mummy. I wish you could get the Hammer films in a DVD box set.

... has anyone of you guys watched Kingdom Hospital? I didn't catch it on the tv, but notice the DVDs available now -- it seems to be a little Twin Peakesque, but I read quite a few negative reviews in the press.... not sure if its worth the £35 outlay.
Another TV series about to get the DVD treatment is Life and Loves of the She Devil, which I recall watching when I was younger and remember it was quite freaky -- not sure if it will have dated but it'll be far better than the film version, based on the Fay Wheldon novel.

I've just ordered from play.com the original series first season for only £15.99... so that should arrive on my mat very soon as well.....

George & I saw Alien vs Predator & Hero this past weekend. Also saw Blade II he had on dvd. All 3 were good, but out of them all, Hero was my fav. Very artistic as Japanese (I think, maybe it was Chinese) movies are, Jet Li was the only name I recognized and it had subtitles. Good Action & storyline(s) too that had color changes with each part. Recommend that one highly. Was going to see Exorcist - the Beginning or the Village, but reviews I have seen and heard on both made us just wait for dvd rental and not waste the 11 buck a pop sans munchies. Next one will be Alexander in November! George saw Troy and although a few discrepancies (heh heh he is Greek!), he enjoyed it.

STARWARS.... Just seen Empire... not happy at all. All of the changes bar 2 I can live with. Firstly, the new Emperor (he looks cool, oK) - in his conversation he hints that Darth is Luke's father, which didn't please me one bit. And the main travesty above all others was changing Boba Fett's accent to sound like Jango Fett - what was the bearded one thinking?? It's just not Boba Fett anymore. My favourite character in the STARWARS universe destroyed....
I don't know, my favourite films, possibly ruined, and from what I hear, there's worse to come... I'm going to cry myself to sleep tonight.

Luckily George & I didn't waste good money on the latest Star Wars and saw it with NetFlix's (a buck something to rent!).. very disappointing. Lucas should have left well enough alone and made his latest two stand alone films and not associated them with the original series (lol, meaning not have made them at all!). Same for Exorcist the Beginning.. you just can't go back in time successfully with a film if the originals are good IMHO.
We are seeing Shaun this weekend and will also see Saw when it comes out. The Grudge also looks good, I think in 'The Ring' sorta way, but we'll see if Geller has her 'Buffy-ness' imprinted in peoples minds.. that will ruin it for folks methinks.

Haven't seen Ring 2 (lol, didn't know there was a 2!), but have seen both English & Japanese versions.
And I don't mean to bash SW fans.. hell I am one, but I honestly didn't think the last two movies were needed as far as the original story goes. He should have done a stand-alone storyline instead. It would have been much better methinks.
And creepy is good! So many movies out in the next few months!

OMG.. you all have to see Shaun of the Dead... hilarious! Gotta love that British Humor! I didn't think they'd be able to successfully merge comedy and zombies.. but oh my.. what a bunch!
Heh ehh, of course you all will guess when you watch it where the safest place to hide from the zombies will be. Wasn't sure if there were any zombies the way it started, but when you see how the main character, Shaun, reacts to things.. you'll see why.
Highly recommend this film for a good time!

George & I saw the Grudge this weekend... one note... don't get into the same theater with a whole mess of teenagers! lol, talk about screaming.. and at the strangest (and less scarier) places!
I think we were the oldest ones there.. me I know by about 27 years!
We're going to see if we can get the Japenese version to see if that is any better, which I'm sure it will be. Mixed on this one as parts were good, but the way they did the storyline just didn't work for me as it was a back & forth thing.. but it didn't merge right.. if you know what I mean. It took a bit to see if it was in the past or the now. I guess it's just that the still/jerky/ring-type movements work better for me as the original. There was an explanation why things were going on, but without giving things away.. the mother should have gone faster than she did.. I don't know. Might have been too that we were in a theater filled with teenagers who screamed at every little thing or the music in parts that prepared you for something happening. It is interesting though what 'Old Wives Tales' go on in other countries.
Anyhoo, it was good I suppose.. we just both wished afterwards that we had seen Saw instead..lol

Ok.. Alexander
Really enjoyed it, great war scenes and portrayal of his 'madness for conquest'. I really think though that there should have been more explanation of the friendships he had as a child growing up.. folks would understand the closeness more.. especially with Hephasion (spelling). Some folks didn't like the innuendos of the relationships the men had back then with other men, so I will say this.. if you can't deal with it.. don't watch the movie or all you will do is blind yourself to the story of Alexander and how powerful he was. Same goes for folks I have seen on other sites/forums who complained about Colin's accent.. cripes, you couldn't really tell.. if that was the case they should have all been Macedonian/Greek and subtitled! A person has to be able to see the story behind the accents, looks, whatever.
I was spoiled too by reading a series of books about him by an Italian author, but Oliver Stone & gang did a fantastic job I thought. Will definately see it againas well as buy the VHS/DVD.

I will know doubt pick the books up again after seeing it on the big stage next week....
Hubris - The Lion The Witch and the Wadrobe is one part of The Chronicles of Narnia written by C S Lewis - a childrens book really, but still enjoyed by many adults, similar to Tolkein and Rowling I suppose. Well worth reading - 7 books in total ..... basically about a Wadrobe, some kids, a lion and a witch getting upto all kinds of shenanigans (a simple synopsis!)

Saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Troy & King Arthur recently. All three good and I really enjoyed KA, nice to see a movie about Arthur where he wasn't portrayed as King of Camelot but as the warrior he was. Excellent fighting scenes too, seeing the fatigue was refreshing and much more realistic to me than someone lugging around armor like it was made of feathers and not getting tired at all.
Cannibal the Musical oie..lol, what drugs were they on when they thought that one up? :)

Saw this film called the Boogeyman, the director apparently did the remake of the Ring and the grudge, so I was a little sceptical. but I watched it and it was quite a good horror film, better than a lot of western horror films anyway. I really have gone off western horror films for Asian horror films. they're just so much better in general, story, acting and directing wise, but this was a pleasant surprise.
I'd probably give it 7 out 10!

Hide & Seek was good Canker, was surprised though regarding the previews.. they started out not showing glimpses of the 'the bad side', which made the movie really good when George & I saw it, but I noticed after it was out a bit they decided to start showing bits.. which could make a person expect to see the bad side. Can't see why they did that. Anyhoo, was a good flick.
Saw Ladder 49 the other day, good one, but I would have liked to have seen more of what firemen do for a living but I understand they do have to put a story in there somewhere :)
Hitch was good too, that Kevin James is a total freak! heh heh, I think he dances worse than I do even!
Got Blow and Donnie Darko in to watch, Trainspotting coming soon. Yeah I know, old movies, but never got around to watching them. Will have to get Cursed now too.
Agree to Asian vs US horror, I enjoyed both the Ring & Grudge Asian than I did US version. George got the series of books too, said they were great and quite different series wise as Ring 2 (which we walked out on btw) had nothing to do with the book. Hour and 10 or so into Ring 2 we knew what the ending was.. very disappointing and waste of money that could have gone to better things!

OMG... you know, you see a trio of movies, like the Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson... then you watch a movie like 'Bad Taste'... and you wonder:
Either he was doing some very strange mind-altering drugs and discovering himself.. or he must have been in Invasion of the Body Snatchers and someone else took over..lol
I don't even know what to say about that movie! Although I think it might fall into the same category as 'Cannibal the Musical' and 'Jesus Christ - Vampire Hunter' LOL!!

He made Bad Taste when he was a student with his mates a camcorder and no budget.
I personally loved it and thought it was pretty well done considering, plus the friends that helped with special effects went on to form Weta Work Shops which worked on most of the stuff in the Frighteners and LOTR including if I'm not mistaken Smeagol/Gollum.
Plus they've just done Kong with him also...
Of all the crappy looking movies of all time this is probably my favourite.

Heh ehh good for you Helm, but my point I was headed to but seemed to have made a left turn at was that he 'has' come a long way!
I didn't know either that he had done "The Frighteners", waiting for that to come out on DVD. And in BT, I knew he was one of the aliens, but didn't know he was ol' whatshisname with his brains leaking out from that flap in his head! I think those scenes were the best.. him fixing his dilemmas and even adding a few other bits in there that didn't belong!

Yeah apparently the frighteners was Hollywood's way of testing him with a budget and seeing what he'd come up with before sanctioning the go ahead for the LOTR triology...
