HI all,
thought I would start a new topic for film in 2006... nice and shiny and short.
What have I been watching?
well I saw Kong, very good, and the dino wrestling is awesome.
Saw constantine, but missed most of it with my mother chattering through it. will watch again soon!
anything else of note? well dunno. lets see what next year brings.

Erm... those are 2005 films? :-P
Anyhoo, seen many new and many old but stand-outs are:
Kingdom of Heaven
Constantine
The Brothers Grimm
Unleashed
Sin City
House of Flying Daggers
Ladder 49
And many oldies.. too many to put down :)

Of the three films I wanted to see this year - Batman Begins, Serenity & Saw II - I only got to see the former. It wasn't bad... I quite enjoyed The Descent, not as good as Dog Soldiers but nicely claustrophobic all the same.
This coming year there's not much I've heard about, only the return of Supes - interesting to see what Bryan Singer does with it.

inetrested in x3, by that could be a bag of poo...
saw both serenity and saw II. liked em both, although seing serenity just after firefly made it seem more like an extended episode than anything else :(

Hey! I'm no troublemaker! :-P Only Drive-Thru Posting... heh heh Ohh Dog Soldiers was surprisingly very good. Will wait for Serenity for DVD release. Would rather Firefly be back but from what I hear happens in the movie.. not sure how they would work that.
Hadn't seen Saw yet

Saw Kong and loved it, bit long though...
Erm.....saw The Wedding Crashers which was very funny in parts but ultimately a stupid movie, but hey Will Farrel cameo's in it which is always a hoot...
Also saw Crash, quite an alright film, if a little basic and it was really just trying to show that every single person in the whole wide world is just a filthy racist no matter what they say or think

Oh yeah and this year definately looking forward to Superman Returns, which bizzarely isn't a remake but a continuation of the Christopher Reeve Movies

Was not a big fan of the Batman movies but i did like Batman Begains.
The best film of the year..Crash.

oh forgot about batman begins, along with sin city probably my 2 favourites of the last year:)
as for superman reborn, looking forward to that, and as it's a continuation of reeves films, I'm hoping they don't mention nuclear man.
also I forgot about pirates 2 smile.gif I just saw the first one again the other day, it's still as good as ever - lets hope they don't screw it up!

Saw the trailer for pirates 2, it looks pretty amazing, there are all sorts of sea monsters and beasts crashing about and even a demony looking Captain Barbossa back from Davey Jone's locker. Oh plus JD doing his drunken shuffle about the deck of the Black Pearl, what more could you want from a film...

Just finished watching The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
Different. A court room drama horror story.
I like it,I thought the Emily character was done nicely by the actress.

Looking forward to "Hostel" and the DVD release of "A History of Violence"...
I've got a stack of DVD's two foot thick that I still need to watch for the first time...The Machinist, The Jacket, Raging Bull, Das Boot...
One I find a lot of people seem to have looked over is "Memento". Another is "Amecian History X" Both excellent.

The Jacket was good, i enjoyed it
Goth Girl
January 4th, 2006, 12:52 PM
And The Machinist is a great film too.
My pile of DVDs to watch got bigger over Xmas rather than smaller (spent too much time on the Playstation rather than watching films)... a huge stack of Japanese and Korean films!

I enjoyed Batman Begins too and am also looking forward to the new Superman film.
I didn't know they were making a Pirates 2 but I would like to see it when it comes out, I loved the first one.

Saw a poster for X Men 3 yesterday. Bring it on!
Quite a few good DVD releases coming up soon... Devils Rejects, Steamboy, One Night In Mongkok, Nightwatch, Howl's Moving Castle and... series 2 of the fantastic surreal sitcom, The Mighty Boosh.
That stack of DVDs to watch ain't getting any smaller!

Finally saw Serenity, 'twas good but it does take out the 'what if' element on if Joss is going to try and bring Firefly out try for another network in the future.
Ohh GG... seen some ..erm.. interesting Japanese films, I tell ya if you want to watch some good horror ones & for something that will make me even cringe (and it takes alot let me tell you!) try the last one:
Ichi the Killer
Battle Royale (I think there is a sequel too)
Visitor Q... this one got me lol
Goth Girl
January 13th, 2006, 05:38 PM
Ema, way ahead of you there luv! I have all of those! Visitor Q is very strange indeed... I think the only stranger one I've ever seen is Gozu... it shares a certain, ummmmmm, "squirty" quality with Visitor Q, LOL!
Battle Royale is quite possibly my favourite film (better than the sequel) and Ichi the Killer is just gross!
I'd also recommend Oldboy (which is allegedly being remade by Hollywood, although given the theme of the film, I really can't see how!), Audition (yeah, girl power! not for the squeamish!) and for something more light-hearted, Save The Green Planet (Japanese horror/sci-fi/comedy at it's best!)
I also saw a review of a mad Jap film called The Calamari Wrestler, about... well, about a giant pro-wrestling squid, what else! Looks toooooo funny!
Ema
January 14th, 2006, 01:59 AM
LOL! Wrestling Squid that ought to be a gas! I erm.. when Audition was going on I didn't quite pay attention to it very much :) Will have to watch that one again.
And I'll check out those others too. And thank you Hollywood, but I'll catch the Japanese version of Oldboy since you seem to muck up remakes when it comes to Japenese films! Loved the Japanese versions of the Grudge & the Ring much better.. it's like taking a Hitchcock film and making a remake out of it and missing the 'essence' of his ways that he put into them.
Heh heh Japanese Horror is so much more! Wish they'd show more foreign films around here, go go Netflicks though for carrying most of them!

I'm kinda lucky as one of my best mates works for a DVD distribution company, and gets lots of advance releases... so this weekend I acquired advance copies of One Night in Mongkok and Vital, a month before they're released, yeah!

Standouts for the last year for me were saw 2, land of the dead and the best of all, sin city. Can't wait till they release sin city 2.
Ema and GG if you like Japanese horror you should check out versus. Its sort of Japanese zombie film, with classic B grade acting and some great gore. I really dig Japanese horror, loved Battle Royale, although I didn't like any of the ring movies, USA or Japanese. Gonna have to try and find some of the others you've mentioned. Also love manga too. Fist of the north star rules if you've never seen it.
Goth Girl
January 19th, 2006, 12:55 PM
Versus is cool, although for Japanese zombie films I prefer Junk and Wild Zero. Zombie-slaying rock stars, too funny!
Keen on Manga too, eagerly awaiting Ghost In The Shell 2, love the first one. Me and the old guy are having an anime weekend this weekend, got loads to watch, of varying quality!

Not scary, no, just tense... in a similar way that Silence of the Lambs was tense rather than scary.

Oh my, just saw SawII yesterday.. good work! But I couldn't watch the first scene lol, nothin' with the eyes!!
I wonder now what they will do with Saw III since one of the production heads died. I know they were going to film a third one, but haven't seen anything about it.
I dont think we can get Wolf Creek here yet, but I have it in my queue.

I saw Saw II a few weeks ago. Wow, nice movie. Great sequel! It really pulled everything together.
Something I am looking forward to that I just saw a preview for the other day is Silent Hill. I have never played the video game, but everyone I have ever talked to said it was a really scary game. The movie looks promising too. It opens here in a few weeks. I can't wait.

I STILL haven't watched Saw2 yet, despite having it on DVD... just haven't had the time recently.
But I did find time to watch the Takashi Miike episode of 'Masters of Horror'... ewwwww, grim! One of those 'watch through the fingers' films! Hopefully it will be released on DVD soon, others in the 'Masters of Horror' series are coming out at the mo.

Wow, Wolf Creek was a good one! One of those sit up in your seat kinda movies, the director did great with showing how remote Australia can get which added to the rest of the story..
'Hmmmmmmhehheh' lol, Mick was great with his 'sure I look harmless but ohh look ..this is a knife' type of character.

Going back to real films (snigger!), if anyone enjoyed Nightwatch (the remake of which is just about to be released on DVD in the UK), then check out the sequel, Daywatch, which is also out now on DVD (Region 1 format only). I think it's available from www.redsundvd.com (http://www.redsundvd.com) (no, I don't work for them!)
This is the follow-up to the original version of Nightwatch... not sure if they'll remake Daywatch for cinema release.

Got round to watching it (Saw II) last night. Didn't enjoy it as much as first but then again expectations were much higher - still plenty of deliciously cringing moments though...
Now a big fan of the Amazon rental wotsit - had a ton of films out that I wouldn't have spent money to go and see and don't want to waste £10 to buy - most have been shite but hey, at least I didn't have to walk down the road and have my choices judged by local spotty inbreds!

Finally watched SawII last night and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Different to the first one of course but as we now know the rules it was fun trying to figure out what would happen before it did. Loved the ending.
Can't say if it was better or worse than the first but as a sequal I thought it was great

Night watch is a cracking film, К сожалению, я пока не говорю по-русски, but dubbed was good as well - a cross between Highlander, Matrix (in a good way) and every adventure yarn since time immemorial... Hope you enjoy...

Damn dodgy DVDs from Hawaii!
The filmage was Gozu on Friday night ("got milk..."!) and Old Boy on Saturday night, one of the bestest films ever. Lady Vengeance, by the same director, is out now on DVD and has been getting great reviews.
I rather enjoyed Silent Hill... is it just me, or were the zombie girls rather sexy? smile.gif

well the thing is I enjoyed it, but knew I shouldn't. it's bad in a rather good way... I think it could have been better... I think they made a couple of mistakes that would have made it nastier... and the fact they left it open in a freddy way was a cop out....
oh well, what's next???

Silent Hill was good....but confusing to the two I went with. The ending anyway. They were a bit squeamish too. Silly men.
It was gory, it was scary (in a surprise ya sort of way), it was loud. Me liked a lot. As for the ending, I don't really see it as a copout. If they don't make a SH2, it's a perfect ending because it leaves questions and confusion and makes it all that much creepier. If there is a SH2, the ending is a very good lead-in to it.
The Aristocrats is HILARIOUS. Anyone who likes dirty humour and comedy in general would like this flick. It's done documentary style (well, it is almost a documentary) but it doesn't leave you wanting. However, don't watch this with someone who doesn't like dirty/raunchy humour, they really won't like it.

Finally saw Lady Vengeance at the weekend, the final film in Park Chan-Wook's revenge trilogy (Old Boy and Sympathy for Mr Vengeance being the other two). Very good film, although still not quite as good as Old Boy (but a lot better than SfMV, which was a bit too slow). The Koreans do nasty so well!
ShadoeWolfe
May 28th, 2006, 09:01 PM
ok - here is the Wolfe's update on the last few films I have caught.
King Kong - Nicely done, but too long. My ass hurt by the time I got out of the show and I was in a theater with nice seats. The action was great and the CG was done beautifully, but the end was just too ridiculous. There is no way anyone could stand at the top of the Empire State building and not get blown off from the winds. Although, having said that, there's no way an ape would wrestle with dinopsaurs either, so I guess I should kinda expect it. smile.gif
Silent Hill - went in with high expectations and left withan empty feeling. Too many holes in the plot, too many things not explained. And from what I've read online, it didn't even stay that true to the video game, but not having played it, i can't say. The effects were nice, but that was the high point of the film.
MI3 - had to see it even though it pained me helping support psycho-boy Cruise. The action scenes were intense and nicely shot, but there was too much love story for it to be a "spy movie." Although, I went back and rewatched the first two movies and that idiot Hunt got himself into trouble in each movie because of women. You would think he would have learned.
X-Men 3 - Absolutely amazing. Just saw it last night as well as the midnight showing on Thursday night. This is the first movie I have seen twice in the theater since the Episode ! came out, and that was just because I hadn't had a Star Wars fix in so long. The storyline is good in Xmen and the effect and action are eye-catching. Wolverine shows us how the regenerative process for the Wamphyri can be done very realistic now. If you haven't seen it yet - make sure you wait through the credits. There is a bonus scene you don't want to miss! grin.gif
Ok - i think that wraps me up for the last few months on my movie watching. Looking forward to Pirates of the Carribean 2 next month. I'll let you know how that one runs if I remember to! smile.gif

I finally got around to seeing Silent Hill this weekend. I thought it was good considering it came from a video game. Atleast it did manage to have some suspense thrown in, unlike most game movies I have seen. The story while interesting did seem rather video game-ish, but it still worked. I did not have any expectations going in and I was entertained. I think it is worth seeing once, though once may be all.

She doesn't normally watch horror flicks. She just happened to be in the room when myself and my horror-loving aunt were watching it. She couldn't or just wouldn't get up and stop watching. Needless to say, she wasn't pleased that she watched it, but for whatever reason wouldn't stop. I'm guessing she won't even try to watch the first.
Forgot to mention: watched Transporter 2, The Visitation and the tv-adaptation-movie of Koontz's Frankenstein. The first was amusing to say the least. Extremely over-the-top. The second was stupid. The third was pretty much the first book on screen. Has the third book in that series even come out yet?

Yeah GG, wasn't that a good movie? I read the book when it first came out and thought it would make a good one. Interesting how different cultures work and how a person being narrow-minded would think of them as being nothing but a glorified hooker and not that it was a much better way of life for some women in that time.
Gotta say, for beautiful films though, nothing beats the Japanese.

Superman... been there done that smile.gif It's a beautiful special effect extravaganza.
Unfortunately, as with the last couple of Singer films (Xmen and Xmen 2) I didn't feel like I cared enough about the characters, at over 2 hours long, I felt I wanted to know more about how lex got out of prision, and what the hell superman was really doing - it missed a lot of explanation of what what really going on.
and the whole "superman saves the earth" that you got with the previous films seems to have been skirted over.
there is only one reason to see it. the feeling you get when you see the credits at the beginning and hear the superman theme - it was so much like being 4 all over again smile.gif
Not a bad film, but certainly not a great film. I'll still be waiting for the next spidey installment - Raimi seems to be the only director on the block who is able to mix action with character development smile.gif (Can I mention evil dead one more time?)

Sam Raimi is a God!!! I don't think I'll ever see a superhero movie that, for all the changes, stayed as closely to the characterisations and feel of the comics book as the spidey movies do.

How in the world can you remake the Evil Dead movies? The story is stupid. The only reason it is good is because it is so bad and cheesy. How can you remake that? But an Evil Dead 4 would be really cool.
And in case anyone cares, Evil Dead was filmed not too far from me. smile.gif

Am debating whether my need to see Warrior King (sequel to the excellent Ong Bak) is greater than my lethargy in going to the cinema!
Warrior King vs lazing in the garden. Hmmmm...!

Shame my portable DVD player isn't Region 1, otherwise I'd be able to watch it in the garden (which is what I do most evenings at the moment)

John, I agree it is possibly the best of the batman films... I think along with spider-man it's the best of all the super hero films smile.gif

I agree. Batman Begins and Spiderman are great movies. They have renewed my faith in super hero films.

Just saw Nochnoy Dozor (Night Watch) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0403358/), got the DVD and decided to see/keep the Russian version with English subtitles which I tend to do with foreign films as dubbing (most times) is not very good and kinda takes away from a film imho.
Have to say I enjoyed it, also ordered the books by Sergei Lukyanenko too, although only 2 are available atm. It's an interesting twist on Vampires, Shapeshifters, Witches and the like. A Good vs Evil sort that have both sides, Light and Dark, keeping tabs on each other so that they don't break a truce that was made, lol they even have warrants out for someone who has accidently (or on purpose) killed another from the other side . Have to say though if you aren't a fan of foreign films and are expecting a 'Hollywood' type of movie you will be disappointed, but you will also be missing out on a good film (as many tend to do unfortunately) if you don't expand and watch other genres.
It's also a movie where you have to pay attention to what's going on too or you can get a bit lost. The storyline is interesting enough for me to order his books, as I mentioned above. Looking forward to reading the books.
Oh, here's something about the book from Wiki:
In the night watch story world there exists a magical realm that exists beneath the surface of all things which is referred to as Gloom (or Twilight in other translations). The actions in the novels centers around a group of people referred to as the Others - human beings who tapped into the Gloom and gained incredible abilities. But the Gloom doesn't offer its gifts freely, feeding off the strength of those Others who enter it. If sufficiently weakened, they are consumed, never to return to the ordinary world. It also forces those entering it for the first time to choose between the Light and the Dark side in a process called initiation. Such a choice is usually final.
This division had always existed between the Others. Those of the Light believed it was their duty to help the weak and the helpless. Those of the Dark shunned all obligations. They did what they wanted, regardless of morals, and consequences. For many millennia, the two sides fought a vicious battle. Both were willing to use any means that would lead them to victory. But eventually they realized that if they continued their battle, neither side would survive. So the leaders of both sides forged the Grand Treaty - a set of laws to govern the way the Others used their powers. The Light Others created the Night Watch, to ensure that the Dark Others would not violate the Treaty. The Dark Others created the Day Watch, to ensure that the Light Others would not violate the Treaty. And the Inquisition, a group composed of both Dark and Light Others donning grey mantles, was created to ensure that neither side became too powerful.
Since then, the Night Watch and the Day Watch kept their eyes on each other, diligently policing every violation of the treaty. But just because the battle was over didn't mean the war ended. The old leaders continued to plot, using humanity and the Others as their pawns. Only time will tell which side would prevail.

The sequel, Daywatch, is available in it's original format from www.redsundvd.com (Region 1)... I've had this for months and not got round to watching it, but with 10 days off work over Xmas, I have time to watch lots of films (stockpiling DVDs at the moment, I have 34 films to watch so far, as well as Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, Peep Show series 3, Family Guy season 5, and King of the Hill season 4 and 5!)
And I agree with you... subbed is much better than dubbed! Dubs always seem to be completely hammed up and ruin the feel of a film completely. Subtitles are the way to go!

Ohh will look at that site then Deb, thanks! I did check out the Wiki on the film and there is alot of the book which isn't in, taken out, other stuff put in, etc. as is usual with films from books.. mainly to appease the US 'Hollywood' audience I reckon. I'll see if there isn't an original UK Night Watch too. Hmm, although not sure what region my Comp/DVD player can do.
Pity that we can't get the great foreign films as easily, and the ones we do get all torn up before they release them.
I hear though that Daywatch is even better, especially when you get the gist of the storyline from the first.
Oh heh ehh I am region 1. Hmm didn't find either on that site, and Amazon only has region 5 for Daywatch. Oh well, will just have to wait.

Red Sun DVD is great... it gets all the foreign releases before they're even shown at the cinema in most places! I got the sequel to Ong Bak (Tom Yum Goong, or Warrior King as it was renamed!) months before it was released at the cinema here.
It's especially great for Asian stuff... makes me glad I have a multi-region DVD player! :)
(Thanks for the email btw, great photo!)

Yeah I saw alot that interested me, will just have to keep an eye out and make sure Region 1 is included!
Ohh I have Warrior King too, if it's the same one we are both talking about, they made a sequel? Great fight scenes in that one!

I believe that there will be a third in the series and that given the sucess of the first two it will be filmed in english with a bigger budget. Hopefully they will keep the feel of the first two.

Just saw Da Vinci Code too. Hadn't read the book, but may just do that too. I liked it, it kept my interest to the end and did a good job on a conspiracy theory (lol had to look carefully at some paintings, albeit on the net!). 'Course this too comes from an agnostic who thinks the bible is only a good 'story' from the get-go. Heh heh God could very well be a woman!

very few books make a good film as your own imagination is taken away when you watch the film version of the book

Yeah Joeann. I meant the film as well. Having to watch Tom Hanks (surely a new Cockney Rhymin' Slang contender there) squirm thru that drivel, was embarrassing enough. :p

Sometimes the worst actual movies are usually the best movies. Mars Attacks is one of them.
Payback could be another.

Saw Night Watch last night, thought it was possibly one of the worst films I've seen in ages, some really good effects etc but the premise and story were just stupid and childish.......thought whoever wrote it lacked any kind of genuine imagination and that it was just old story's and ideas thrown together and not very convincingly
