I was just wondering what kind of job do the fine thralls and Lts and Lords and ladys have out in the real world?

Right now I work as a Security Guard/Administrative assistant at night for a contractor with the DOD in Southern Maryland. I actually don't do much... surf the net... homework for computer classes... read horror stories for a few hours. I'm here just in case something goes wrong with an experimental aircraft (called the V-22) during the hours when there aren't too many people on base. Not exactly the most challanging job in the world, but it could be worse.

Job...well - my dream profession is full-time webmaster of a popular site - wait, I've got that! http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/smile.gif

What actually pays the bills is an 8 to 5 restoration job. I restore antiques and other oddities as well as other wood projects - basically, whatever the customer wants. Then I come home and plop down in front of this ol' computer and play.

I've also done computer consulting work and tutoring on the side for fun. That's me in a nutshell. Any questions?

I have quite a bizarre job - I'm the production manager for a publishing company that makes personals columns for newspapers all over England. "Ugly bloke seeks slim attractive female..." that sort of stuff. Don't know how I ended up in this job, as I studied Microbiology and Marketing at university! http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/redface.gif

Potempkin, your job sounds cool, but I don't think much of your taste in Pringles (I like the ones in the green tube!)

GG,

Oops! Those were the ones I meant -- the Sour Cream and Onion ones. I've corrected this important blunder in my profile now.

Funny that Scarlet oHorror mentioned Pringles in her First time thread. I wonder if there's any correlation between an affection for Lumley and addictive potato snacks...
As I gaze across the panorama of stacked empty tubes I am reminded of mile high aeries, and manta shaped flyers. Come to think about it, the Pringle vessel itself represents the Vampire world as on the one side we have the English forces of good and on the other the dastardly fun-sucking French.

What happened??? I was typing away here and my screen reloaded and erased everything I typed. Oh well, I'm not doing all THAT again. Here's what I do in a nutshell - I work for a publishing company in southern Florida. We put out a catalog full of other catalogs for various companies. I'm assistant to the programmer here. I also help out in other depts, such as data entry taking orders etc etc. Seems I'm the only person here who has the balls to change the fluorescent lights haha (people here get scared when they hear pops and see sparks fly). It's not too bad, though I think I'd like to run my own pc support center, making house calls to people's homes, either that or get the writing thing going. Maybe it would be easier to rob a few banks and retire, eh?

The Faceless One
February 16th, 2000, 02:51 AM
What is my job? Hmmmm.....
Well, I've got quite a few. Take your pick.

First and foremost would be world traveler. I know that sounds a bit cliche, but that is what I do. I've been to just about every little corner of the world and back again. Sometimes for fun, sometimes for work. The fact that I like to roam around (and I also like to keep my butt in front of my hearth in my home in the mountains for long periods, too) is probably due to the fact that I hardly ever travelled when I was a youth. My family was low middle class, yet I received the best education, and that took up most of the excess money we had. We went all over the east coast when I was a little kid, visiting relatives, site seeing, etc. The frequency of these trips sharply declined as I got older. So, since then, I have had this burning urge to see the world, and so I got into Archaeology and Anthropology in college. Now, I travel all over the world, and I mostly do work for Museums, magazines, the discovery channel (off and on, for those of you in the states), and of course (very rich) private collectors. Some of the interesting baubles I pick up on my extremely frequent excursions I often auction on someplace like ebay. I also collect alot of things from my trips, so my basement has been transformed into my own personal museum of wonders, with artifacts running the gamut of human history. I wouldn't even dare to guess how much it is worth. It could be priceless to some people. Others might just consider it junk with sentimental value. Considering most of these pieces are one of a kind, I would vouch for priceless. That hardly matters though, I am not going to sell them. The crowning piece of my collection is a mummy that I acquired in egypt. He wasn't a pharaoh or a high priest, just a simple architect. I picked him up a few years ago in egypt, when I was doing an excavation for a museum in Turkey (it really bit the big one. I am never working for turks again). I was getting into an arguement with the Egyptian Bureau of Foreign Affairs, because I was raising objections about the Egyptians building some kind of resort or something in near an ancient quarry. The authorities planned on digging up the graves of dozens of men to do this. I objected on moral grounds. "And why should you be raising such objections," they sniffed,"Don't you rob the dead and lay their bodies on slabs for the public to oogle at?"

That really got my dander up, and when I found out one of the officials in charge of the operation was going to try and sell the mummies for profit, I managed to get the majority of them to private collectors (who paid for them by making donations to selected charities), and public institutions (like museums). So I got the last laugh.

But, I decided to take one of the mummies with me. He didn't have much, just the typical things they bury with a middle class individual, nothing big and fancy. But now, he has a nice air tight glass case to keep him safe, and since he was originally interred near an outcropping of rock from a canyon, I thought he might like to stay at my home in the mountains. Better than being sold to someone who couldn't take care of his body and coffin.

Right now I am currently at my own home, and I am just figuring out how to properly write a computer program with Visual Basic. I never really used computers that much, except when using them to help map out dig sites. I guess I better learn how to use them now, or I'll really be in the dark ages. :E

Still, I don't travel as much as I used to. I still do it every few months or so, but lately I have (as I have said) been learning to write computer programs.

And I also would like to teach at college or University. I applied to a few colleges already, and some of them rejected me saying I was "Too young". Having a teacher who was only a little older than the students wouldn't promote respect for said teacher in the class room. What a load.

Heh heh..this is a tad off the beaten path, but I remembered a story that happened in my childhood. Picture being in the year 1968, ok..well some of you can't do that. Anyhoo, we were asked by our teacher to do a report one weekend on what we wanted to be when we grew up.

I asked the only person I could think of at the time what great job would make me alot of money, and would ensure me a lifetime position...my Dad.

Getting that answer I proceeded to write down what I was going to be, and proud of myself I went to bed, then followed that with having a great weekend like any child does.

Come Monday am, I stood in front of the class like all the others reading my report.. 'What I want to be when I grow up is..' to make a rambling story short..it was a Mortician. Moral of the story? Before you decide on money or longevity alone..find out what the heck you are wanting to be before you say it in class.

I actually did think about that too for a while.
