I'm just wondering because I am 17, and I none of my friends will even try to read Necroscope, because it is too long. Should I give up, or are there other teenagers on this board?

Although you are 17 Thrall SimonK, you are well ahead of your peers. Be proud that you have the patience and desire to read these great works of Brian Lumley. I am 27 and I just started to read this series about 9 months ago. So far I am about 80 pages away from finishing Blood Wars. I think that the age isn't important, it's the intelligence and maturity within one's self. So don't be afraid to be different. Choose the path least traveled. Until next time fell Thrall.
Happy Raiding,

I'm 22, and I still go through that problem with most of my friends. Age might not have anything to do with it. It might just be a personality issues. I was a teenager when I started reading Brian Lumley also. Age shouldn't matter anyway. Nice to meet you.

SimonK I think you should read the book no mather what your friends say it's a great book. And reading is fun more fun then most crappy tv shows there is well.. more fun then any imho.. Anyway, I'm 20, but I still feel young! http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/wink.gif I'll turn 21 this year too *sighs* Getting old, have to go look for a nice cane soon.. and as for reading, I have to agree with some others, age really dont mather..

I've got to agree with Fenris that if you enjoy reading, by all means read (especially if it's a great book). I'm 32 and most of the people I work with just don't read anything, which I find odd because I read almost anything. There is a major chunk of society that just sits in front of the "idiot box" - which is ok, because that's how I make the $$$ to buy my books http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/smile.gif
I think I was around 8 or 9 when I made my first trip to the library in town where I grew up. But now, I don't like to have to take the books back, so I'm amassing a collection.

I'm 29 but feel like 18. I have all that adult stuff to worry about like mortgages, work, losing my hair(just kidding), but I still live life to the fullest..I usually read at night when I go to bed...it puts me to sleep...also I have found that my dreams sometimes relate to what I am reading. I know this sounds crazy but I have actually had dreams about Starside, E-Branch and this one recurring dream where I don't know how I got to the edge of a swamp.........

I'm 24... going on 2400...
I was put onto Lumley by my Dad when I was 15... since when I've introduced my sister, some friends, friends families and just about anybody else who'll listen to me for more than 5 minutes.
'Trust me, these books arer great,' I'll say, 'If you do nothing else then read the first couple of chapters, if you don't like it - fair enough...' That usually works, they know I won't leave them alone until they've read at least the first few pages, but that is more than enough... http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/cool.gif

I don't think I wanted to read series that dragged on and on....but this series, each book is a work of art and totaly engrossing I'm on my fourth read. just started the source.

Age is of no importance. Rather the time you live in. I started reading Brian's work before I even realized it. I read one of the titus crow stories..the first one. Then 2 years later at 19 I picked up necroscope. My mother gave it to me. I was hooked. I am going to be 28 next month, and find I still wait anxiously for each book as it comes out. Computers weren't for ordering or reading books then. Now alot of people, young people are missing out on improving their imagination from lack of reading time. So if your reading that now, well, it shows you prefer to enjoy a good book over a video game. Just keep reading, if they don't want to read...it can only be their loss. Not yours.

I'm 30 and love Brian's work, as well as other horror writers such as James Herbert, Clive Barker, Graham Masterton etc.
I started reading the Necroscope series when I was 23 and so far have never looked back. I agree that age doesn't matter so long as we like the books and Brian keeps writing them.
I must admit though to loving TV and computer games just as much, many an evening I have agonised over starting a new book, watching an episode of the x-files or playing a good game of Halflife, decisions decisions????

i strarted reading when i was like 17.
The strangest thing was i had no idea what i was getting into.
The first series that i read was the lost years, Like i said i had no idea what i was getting into. I bought the book mainly because i was leaving on a train within the next couple of hours and just needed something to pass the time. it was like finding a golden needle in a haystack by accident. im 22 now and i have been reading ever since.
I then went on to read the vampire world series and then finally i was able to find the necroscope series.I did it totaly in reverse.
what were the first books that everyone else read???

Don't give up on your friends. I only started reading when I was 20, 24 now, and I only started because my friend wouldn't shutup about Rice's Vampire books. A year an a half later I found the Necroscope on one of my moms shelves and then It was my turn to annoy the crap out of him. Guess which ones he liked better http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/smile.gif

I've only read the Wamphyri books until now, but other posts on this board have convinced me to read the rest of Brians work (especially demogorgon, boy have you made me curious!!)

I turned 18 on April 16th. I have been reading Lumley since I was 16. That was when I first read Necroscope. Since then I have read all 11 current Necroscope books, Demogorgon, House of Doors, Maze of Worlds, the first 2 volumes of Titus Crow, and have begun the Psychomech Trilogy.. And in my old age Lumley will be one of those authors I still remember

39 years plus here :) First read Brian's works in the early '80s then in the later '80s I stopped reading- life got too busy. I regret that now. I have read 13 Brian Lumley books so far this year, several Clive Barker, a few Ramsey Campbel and several others...life's still busy, but I make the time to read now!

but even though i bought him Necroscope 3 and all of Vampire world books for his birthday he still hasn't got into it, I think he read about 20 pages of Necroscope 3 and that was it.

I'm always the youngest person on a messageboard about this sort of thing. I'm 16 and I started reading BL's work early this year, though I've read 4 of his books so far and am hoping to get more soon. I really like the way he blended a whole bunch of different genres into the books. Definitly one of the best authors I've read. My friends, on the other hand, look at me like I'm crazy and won't touch the books. Odd behavior for a group of crazy gamers, but oh well.

I'll probably be talking about Brian Lumley to people until I'm 64.
Maybe by then we would have seen every Necroscope book made into a some of the best movies we've ever seen.

Hey Simonk, I'm 17 (plus 10) and I flat-out refuse to get any older. As far as getting flak for the crime of *gasp* reading, I've got one for you. I was on lunch at one of my old jobs reading a H.P. Lovecraft book and I had an adult, an old enough to vote, father of children adult actually ask me:
"How can you read?" I knew it wasn't a matter of literacy either. Some people seem to think books are either vessels for pictures or simply a waste of time. At the risk of sounding condesending, I also find these people are generally folks who have had their immaginations destroyed by TV!!!! Oh well, I guess we'll all have to be content to "see" amazing people and places, rather than discuss the merits of yesterdays episode of The Gerry Springer Show, The Real World, ect...
I hope I didn't offend anyone with that last crack. http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/frown.gif

I'm 27...just had my birthday April 2. That's not over the hill....right?
Umm...I've introduced many people to Brian's work and many of them choose not to read it because of the horror nature. "I won't be able to sleep after reading that stuff!", was a quote I heard a few times. It seems odd to us but there are many people out there that can't stomach the scary side of the imagination...the side Brian brings out.

Hi everyone, I'm new here - just found this website.
I'm a 21 year old film student, I got into Lumley through Lovecraft and came to love his broad spectrum of ideas better. Not that one has to definitely be better than the other, they're enjoyable on different levels.
My favorite in the (original) Necroscope series was the 5th one, I thought the ending was awesome!

I'm 27. Been an avid reader since, well, since I could read I guess. Now, I read whatever is handy. Read all the Necroscopes three times, ( except for Invaders, only done that one twice. ). I myself have bugged three friends into reading Necroscope. They are big Sci-Fi readers but after they finally relented and read about Harry. That was it. All three of them have read the entire series to date.

I'm 26, and I started Necroscope at age 19, while I was in the US Navy. When the ship was out at sea, reading was scarce, (as was time to read), so when I finished a book, I'd give it to a small ship's library. Several shipmates ranging from 19 to 31 would tell me that Necroscope was F'in awesome, do I have the next one? Necroscope is for smart people.

21 here! Doing my best to remain a student and avoid entering the real world! I rather like the sound of Professional Student, don't you?
My friend suggested I read Necroscope after I started complaining to him about how wimpy the Anne Rice vampires are. To be honest, he made it seem like a rather stupid series (he's not much good at describing things), so I put it off for a while.
Finally, I picked up the first book, if only to get him to shutup about it. I had a hard time getting into it at first, but once I did I was hooked. Now, about two months later, I am up to Bloodwars and mostly through it. I love this series!!!

i'm 24. avid reader my whole life. started reading stephen king in 5th grade (what's that, 11-12 yrs old). i first was exposed to the Necroscope series by picking up Deadspeak in paperback in a grocery store on a trip. after i finished that, i immediately started at one and caught up. ever since then i've been buying them as soon as they hit paperback (which is usually when i'd find out the new book was out) with the exception of Lost Years and the first E branch book. as a matter of fact, i'm buying the new E branch tonite off of barnes and noble or amazon.
(hmmm, i think i smell a skunk out in the backyard). i've read the entire series back to back several times. in the past six months, i've started reading Lumley's Mythos stories. right now i'm in the last third of HP Lovecraft's(who i've been reading for about three years) Dream Cycle (just starting Case of Charles Dexter Ward).
i always try to get my friends to read the Necroscope series. 4 out of 5 bite, 3 of those 4 read the entire series and fall in love.

I am 26 years old and i started reading Clive Barkers "books of blood" when I was 18.
The same year i finished all the books Clive had written, hence I started on a book with a great looking cover and a great sounding titel-The Necroscope- I had never before heard about Brian Lumley, but it did'nt take very long to get hooked. At the minute I have finished all of Brians books and they are well stored in my bookshelf. I still hav'nt gotten hold of the E-branch series cause the shops here in the nothern regions ain't much good, but it's great hearing about it here on the net.
My missus is also a big fan as I introduced her to The Necroscope earlier this year, she's already finished with Lost Years 2.
These pages have been my salvation until I get hold of the rest of Brians books.

Well, it's nice to know that there is younger people still reading books. I got hooked on horror books in 10th grade English when we read Carrie(Stephen King) in class and that was back in 76. I started reading BL's books in the mid 80's and have managed to collect most that is available in HC. I find that it is very rare to find another female of my age(40) that gets into horror books or movies. Luckily, my son(16) has been reading some of my books(PB only) and has started to appreciate BL's originality.

I am 28 years and have been reading BL since I was 18 years old. So far I have only read the Necroscope series. I have the same problem convincing my girlfriend to start reading the series, but no luck so far. Keep trying on your friends and until they turn around enjoy them yourself

Well, I started reading when I was 13 with a wonderful young lady named Poppy Z. Brite. A few close friends joined in on her books with me. I started in on Lumley at about 16 & haven't really been able to put them down. Now I'm 20 and still reading but the last friend I tried to get to read the Necroscope had to put it down because it kiept giving her nightmares. I found that quite encouraging, since I love to scare and horrify most of my friends!

I'm 18 years old. I started reading the Necroscope series @ 13. I've read plenty of good books, but nothing keeps me as entertained as the Necroscope series.

I am 22, a friend of mine got me hooked on this series. I started reading about 3 months ago and already am on Blood Wars. I have not been able to stop reading since. I also can't wait till I can read the rest. Don't let your friends bother you. If you want to read it then read it. You picked a good author and series to read. HAVE FUN!!!

Mimi is a cool ID as long as a group of you don't get together and scream (my sense of humor is not what it used to be).
I'm 34 and picked up a PB House of Doors too long ago to remember. Still got the bugger, and still re-read it every couple of years. Started Necroscope thereafter and have gone though them in order, for the most part as they were published (Damn Brian and his cliffhangers!)

I'm almost 16, and began reading Necroscope by just picking it off the shelf in Barnes and Noble. Haven't put the books down yet.

Well, I started into reading novels of the "horror" genre back in 7th grade. Never heard of Lumley until I had just begun 9th grade. I was 14 at the time. It was The House of Doors. But I couldn't find the first Necroscope novel when I went to bookstores (Nearest bookstore is 20 miles away and quite a distance for someone who had no means of transportation.) for quite a long time. The summer I finished 9th grade in fact. I had found all of the others that were out at the time but not Necroscope. (I'm the type of person that must read a series in the correct order. MUST.) I finally found it when I was in Alaska on vacation. I read that and half of Vamphyri! (Wamphyri!) by the time I got back to California. (About 5 or 6 days later.) I've been hooked since and have read 40 of his novels/collections/booklets...and then discovered and read everything by Lovecraft.

Well I must say I am impressed... I am 31 years old and I have been fortunate enough to have a close circle of peers that not only read but that do it with zeal. One day while hanging out in an Airport (of all places) I found this weird looking book with a skull on the front, I bought it to give to my friend who was waiting for his flight. He devoured the book and recomended that I get it for myself, I did and the rest is history. I now own most of Mr. Lumley's works and have yet to find a bad one in the bunch. As for all of the friends or peers that will not or don't read in general... Dare them! Dare them to read the first chapter in any one of your favorite books. I know it sounds silly but many of my fellow readers are readers because I dared them to read one chapter out of Necroscope and tell me why they couldn't finish it. Heck I started a few of them by giving them "Fruiting Bodies and Other Fungi" If they can't find the time to read a whole book do it a short story at a time. I am known for giving books as gifts and I think that they are better for it, and so will all of your friends when you start doing it to them.

I am 19 I recived a copy of the comic version of the first Necroscope when I was 14 I have read that thing countless times until one day a friend told me that he had saw the novel version at a rummage sale the day before so I went and bought it for 75 cents. I think I read it 5 or 6 times in a row. Then later I bought Necroscope 2 and 5 at a casino for 50 cents each. Later I was given 3 and 4 and a brand new copy of the original and then I read the whole set begining to end quite a few times before I was given a copy of Lost Years 1 and then I while I was waiting for Lost Years 2 I discovered the Vampire World trilogy so I bought all of those and reread the whole set again and by then vol 2 was out so I bought it and read it and then desided to read the whole series in order with Lost Years 1 and 2 in the middle. One day I was at a book store and discovered the Psycomech series bought those and read them a couple times and then went back to the Necroscope series AGAIN read it all the way through AGAIN then I found a brand new copy of Maze of the Worlds in a bag along side of the road while changeing a flat tire so I read that. Then started looking for House of Doors while I waited for my copy to arive.....actually I started a series by Terry Brooks called Running with the Demon but that is another story when I finally got my copy of House of Doors and read it I bought Invaders read it then reread the whole series while I waited for Defilers I after I got it and finished it I started over and now I am done again and still have to wait for Avengers

I'm 28, picked up the first Necroscope book when I was in the Army, stationed in Germany, back in '91. Didn't know a damn thing about the book, or Brian Lumley, just that the story sounded good and I liked the cover... I tried three times to read it, but just couldn't get used to all the big (russian) words, guess I was used to the less intelligently-written books. Anyway, once I did get into it, I was hopelessly hooked, and have been ever since. Now, I'm going down that ride a second time http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/smile.gif

Oh man, it's good to be back. Banished to the Icelands due to overwork...
Well I'm a 27, god that's depressing, I started reading Lumley at about 23. I had a very boring job at the time. But I only worked for 15 mins every hour. I picked up Blood Brothers from WHS, experianced a little difficulty understanding the first chapter, then in the space of about 8 weeks finished the Vampire series.
I'm now looking to fulfill my destiny by locating a female hooked into vamps to release a new breed for terror into the world.

Nice to hear from you GG. Hope you're still as lovely as ever.
Breeding is slow. My fav haunt, The Underground, is more a play groung for those who bat for the wrong team. I have nothing against them.. but they do make life a little harder in the dark..not to mention scary.

Hi, I am 23. I started to read BL about 4 months ago and I am on to "Dead Speak" now. I had started to read fiction since grade 3. Yes, I am not kidding. I had more than 400 books now and I had borrow countless of them from library. I think reading is the best habit that once could hope to pick up. Reading can transport you to a different world and help you notice little things in life that you haven't register before. Btw, I picked up my reading habit from my mum. I always remember that she read on the bedside until me and my siblings fell asleep.

I hope the series will continue to surprise me. The first two books were shocking experience for me. I never read anything about vampire like this before. Before I started the Necroscope series, I was into Anne Rice's vampire saga. I thought AR's vampires are so "human" in a way that they experience the same emotion that we all go through but the intensity are so much more. The emotional scars in them are lasting for centuries. Then, after I read started to Necroscope, it brought me to a new world with another unique perspective. Harry's relationship with the dead, the unlimited ESP talents, thrilling spy espionage action, psychotic mind of half vampire, all these pieces were blowing me away with a huge blow into this dark world. I am so glad that my friend suggested me to read this book. This friend of mine is the living talking bible of horror stories. Btw, my mum never told me how good read could be. But, her total concentration and fascination shown on her face make me wondered and inspired me to discover the world of literature.

Hi! I'm 27, and I first started when I was 18.. I was working a long night shift and getting totally bored, when I spotted a battered old copy of Necroscope 2 tucked away on a shelf. I thought 'Oh well, It'll pass the time if nothing else'... Suffice it to say not a lot of work got done that night! Since then I have read all 13 books, and loved every bit of them all! (may have to replace my paperbacks now though, they're fairly tatty from the multiple re-reads!) I got a couple of friends reading them as well and we're all completely hooked! http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Alex...this topic was actually started over a year ago. It might just be the oldest and the one posted to by the most people, now that 'Whats everyone reading now or lately' is gone. (The oldest one at the top that is.)
I just brought it back up for new people... http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/smile.gif

I am 17,until June 20, I'll be 18, and I started reading the series with "The Last Aerie" at age 12. At that time, it was the bright orange cover which attracted me, and the word "vampire" on the back cover...I was sold. Anything you want to know about any kind of vampires, just come to me and I will satisfy!

I have been reading Mr Lumley's works since his first appearence in DAW books in the early 70's. He is one of small handful of authors that I read every new work as it appears on the shelves.
Oh, by the way, I'm 43.
