I really, really hope no one decides to make a movie out of any of the necroscope books, because it would most likely turn out to be a cheesy b movie that might make it to usa up all night. although I would like to see a visual interpretation of the wamphyri.

A movie would be extremely cool. The story lends itself well for movies. It could be done, if well executed. The problem with horrormovies is, that there tends to be too much humour in them. It should be vicious, brooding and bloody (eeh, like Necroscope?).
And the rating problem. The movie should be made for adult audiences (the only way).
I think the first evil dead movie is one of the coolest horrors ever made. Damn scary stuff there. Now someone should make Necroscope into a movie with today's possibilities in the effects department.
Let's hope it will be made and i agree with you, that it would be a damn shame if it turns out like a cheesy b-movie.

I agree that it should not be made into a movie. It just seems to me that it would not do any justice to the book and vice versa. There is just too much detail, histroy, characters, etc....... that it would take more than 3 hours just to get a good story line. Not that I don't want to see it done. If someone had all the right staff, special effects people, directors, actors etc... then it might be possible, but to get all of this stuff right it would cost you a wad of cash.

Hmm..isn't that movie "Evil Dead" the one where that guy's hand was possessed and trying to kill him? If so..sorry but that was the funniest movie I have ever seen, I just couldn't see the horror in it.

As for the movie. I agree that it would have to be a lengthy movie in order to even touch the detail that Brian gets through his books. I had "TV/Cable Mini-Series" run through my head, but that would ruin it being splattered throughout with commercials. But on the other hand, you could spread it out two, three days. And then doing that, even with cable I'm sure you could do that, you could have the movie sold all in one, like Braveheart, or whatever, two, three video sets.

Rambling again I am sure.. :-

<font color="#990000">The movie that you are thinking of is Evil Dead II: dead by dawn. Very funny movie, but it has been said to be the only movie that only has things that it needs. No extra bits that are not needed.....

I could ramble on about the evil dead trilogy fot a couple of days, but I am sure that no one would care..............

A good place to find out about movies is:
The internet Movie Database (http://www.imdb.com/) It really is the most comprehensive guide that I have found out there.....(I am not marketing their site either!)

I think I may have to start a new topic elsewhere now as I have had an IDEA!!!</font>

Oh ok you think that there is to much detial in the story to make a movie remember that a movie can show about 20 pages worth of writing in about 4 mins!!!! Even less when it is nothing but dialong!

What about a serial? YOu know the used to do that back in the old days! Also the movie doesnt have to the expenisive! In the movie aliens they only had like 4 or 5 human suits to work with.

I am all for a movie as long as brian rights or co-rights the script! and working with the production crew

Hi All,
The entire series could make fantastic films if it's done right. I think suggesting that it 'would be bad' just because other films have been massacred isn't entirely true. It simply needs to be done the right way, by the right people, without compromising. Firstly, you'd need to get Brian in on the script. Working with a professional script writer or writers. Secondly concentrating on ONLY the first book...make that into a two hour movie, don't try to get the whole lot into one movie. When I say without compromising I mean without compromising. Anne Rice's book became an instant hit when the movie was released, it didn't only make the movie worthwhile doing, it also gave her novels record sales...and lets face it...compared with Brian Lumley she might as well have been my eight year old daughter. There obviously would need to be a lot of discussion as to the rating, personally of course you'd have to say R 18+, but, if you read the rules of censorship you can get away with quite a lot in an MA 15+ movie (the only way a professional film company would take it on). If it wasn't going to be done properly, obviously noone here wants to see a tacky version put out. Which leads me to money. I don't know whether Brian hears what's said on here or not, but I hope some of it filters down to him...mostly because he does an absolutely fantastic job, he is the ultimate horror/fantasy novelist. We don't want to see his books turned into the trashy movies Stephen King seems to have turned to. Anyhow...money...what if...and I know this is conjectural...don't know if it's ever been done before, but...what if the movie itself was floated on the stock exchange? Anyone around the world could buy shares in the movie. This wouldn't fund the entire movie, but would most likely get the ear of the big movie producers. I guess the main question then is...is there enough Brian Lumley followers out there who'd buy a share in his movie? I mean a legal share too...where you own x% of the movie takings. There's very few movies that don't end up making profits...and done properly this could snowball into something very special. Given that you've already got the starting point of a story which is by far the best vampire story ever written, it's not ALL blood and guts all our horror, Brian knows how to build characters and I know that if he was to work on the script that a movie could be made to do justice to his work. At the moment, there's a select few people (on a global scale) who are aware of his work, I'm one of them, you're one of them, but there are literally millions who haven't discovered his genius. Just because they haven't picked his book up off the shelf doesn't mean they can't share in the story. Let's not be selfish and say but it will destroy 'my' vision. After all, you will still keep your vision, you'll just be sharing in someone elses...and if it's Brian's...then...I want to see it! Love to hear some feedback from this, so send me email or post replies here (or both preferably). As for who plays Lardis...definitely Harrison Ford!! Oh..and Wratha or Lady Karen has to be Catherine Zeta Jones.

This movie would have to be done in anumber of movies, c'mon the starwars saga isn't even complete yet and people love it.
it wouod have to have a global appeal though and im not quite sure that it would happen.
But i know of many people that would certainly buy it just for the sake that it had the words Brian lumley on it

A movie, hmmmm. Well on balance yes. The first necroscope book would make a great movie on it's own and would provide a forum in which a screenplay and direction could be developed for the later books. Violence and sex could be used or limited with out any detrimental effect on such a powerful story. The stories are basically character based so the actors would have to be top class although not necessarily famous. Any film would require major input from Brian himself and the net is the obvious tool for reader input. No low budget film(s) could do these books justice. A classy production is the only real option. The big issue would be getting a director brave enough and a studio with the guts to back him/her all the way.(we're talking the 'Lord of The Rings' of horror here)

I've said it before...
I'll say it again....

Film(s) would be a bad idea.

Oks Im no Film Expert, and all this is just my simple views on the matter, so put me right by all means http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/smile.gif

I could rattle on for ages about BL's input and money and all the other positive things that could make the films into a success, but in my humble opinion, a film could never do the book justice.
No way could a film company content itself with just doing 'one' book in a film - we'd get some dodgy amalgam.
I think a Series of Films, whilst sounding like a good idea in theory, would falter in consistency from film to film.

As much as I'd (we'd)love BL to make multi-mega £ thru film making, methinks it would be best left buried, so to speak....

While i love the Necroscope series, a movie would be an entriely bad idea. The books are great, but what makes them great is the ability to use your imagination. Imagining what the Whampyri, their homeland, and their aeries look like is left to your part of the suspense. Having these things portrayed according to someone else's imagination is like stealing thoughts if you will. Leave it be and you will keep your adoring fans.

I think that the Necroscope Series should be made into a movies, as long as the script stayed true to the books. I do agree that it should be a series of movies to do true justice for the books. I don't know about you, but I would love to see how Hollywood would portray Harry using the Mobius Continuum.

WillK,
I do think the Necroscope series could be done into a movie. It would probably have to be more than 13 movies long. Since I think that some of the books would have to be split up. If Lumley himself was in on everything and didn't fold like Anne Rice, then it could be done. I would love to see his complete visual interpretation of the series. But it would cost bucu bucks, probably more than Star Wars to really do it justice. Computer graphics combined with good old fashioned special fx would really bring out everything. Your idea of helping to pay for it through stocks is excellent! Considering how many of us already spend so much money getting old hard backs and such, we could probably pull off a good chunk and get it the attention it needs. You should email him with the idea and/or take a poll to see how many of us would be willing to buy shares and how much. Maybe we can help get this thing off the ground!

i love the trilogy of John Clancy movies (hunt for red october, patriot games, & clear and present danger) BUT i haven't read the actual books yet. with 'Interview With a Vampire' i saw the movie before i read the book. where as with the Stephen King film adaptations, specifically 'Salems Lot (actually my mom & sister made me watch that when i was five but read the book at twelve and saw the movie a second time shortly thereafter) and The Stand, i have read the books first and really was annoyed at the blending or outright omission of characters and scenes. i try to make it a rule to avoid movies based upon books i've already read. right now i'm reading the anthology "Dream Cycle of H.P.Lovecraft". before i get to 'The Case of Charles Dexter Ward' i am going to see the movie 'the Resurrected', which i've heard is one of the few good adaptations of HPL. seeing the movie first and then reading story help remove the annoyance i tend to suffer. i'm willing to bet about half of you could have the same problem seeing the movie after reading the story. and i know if you're reading this you read at least one, if not all, of the Necroscope books.
we all have our own very different mental images of people, places and events which take place between the covers of each and every Necroscope novel. for christ's sake my Harry doesn't even have an english accent, my Sir Keenan Gormley is my dad, and my Mary Keogh has my mother's voice. my Starside is the Bighorn Mtns. in Wyoming, USA. Stephen King addressed such complaints in one interview by comparing his readers to a kid who has a balonga sandwich in his lunch everyday, until one day he gets a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and says "what the hell is this?! i'm not going to eat this carp!" i for one am, regretably, one of those little kids.
BUT i do admit, it is unbelievably fun to talk about who i think would fit this role or that role. and i absolutely love reading everyone's ideas as to which actors and actresses fit their mental images of BL's characters. after all, isn't the purpose of this messageboard just an exchange of ideas.
but that's just my opinion, i could be wrong.

I think a Necroscopse movie is an excellent idea.

Best directors for it would have to be Tim Burton, Tarantino or John Woo for the action http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/smile.gif

Lotsa CGI effects http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/smile.gif

For one thing I think Anthony Hoppkins would make a great Lardis. And as for Mel Gibson,I think he might be a good Ben .I 've seen all of Mel's movies and I think he would pull off a good Ben.as for the others i'm still working that out.

Just make it an Anime series.

season 1 necroscope

season 2 Wamphyri

etc.

it costs almost nothing on special effects and most anime (henti at least) can do tenticle...... intimacies, with out blinking.

you just need a good animation house to do it. and thought Don Bluth did a great bit of eye candy with Titan AE. I think the job should go to an out of country house. One that has a good rep in anime already and can deal with the subject matter effectivly. Let's face it if it WAS done in the US or Britian it would be kiddie-fied beyond belief.

So then the options are make a huge budgeted Movie with fx out the @$$.

Or make a big budget English anime that would be true to the novels.

if it did get big screen then most of the things in the novels would have to be cut for time and content.

there is a ton of stuff you can get away with in anime. rent some like Evangelion and find out.

PS. it should NEVER appear anywhere on Cartoon Network.

How dare you even suggest such Blasphemy!...No mere cartoon could protray the excellence of this series...and quite frankly seeing Harry as a big, teary-eyed cartoon character would kill me.

Ohh God, another person that thinks that Anime is just "a cartoon" it is the Ideal format. make sure you get some decent voice actors that can carry it off and your sorted.

if you think Anime isn't very good at portraying emotion.. watch grave of the fire flys!.

Anime as an idea for the movie(s)is just excellant...and it wouldn't cost nearly as much as if you used flesh and blood acters....on another note, using the stock exchange as a crutch is just brilliant! my warm regards to the author of the idea...

I agree with you totally,Tonka!

I'd love to see a live action version of the series. I don't think it will happen or I would not live to see the final movie. Animation but please not Anime!

hi, guys. I know I'm new here, but I still wish to express my opinion on the idea of making the necroscope books into a movie. I have tried to read your posts in the various topics, but must admit I didnt get to read all of them (running out of time today. lol) and I think that its alright to make my feelings known on this issue. For one thing, it is very true that movies can take several pages of text and turn it into a few minutes of action footage. The downside of this, however, is that the author must leave his vision in the hands of "geniuses" who may elaborate on his work, or even detract from it. Too often, a wonderful work of fiction is simply mutilated onscreen, and I couldnt bear to sit through the mutilation of Harry Keogh. I have come to love that character above all others in the Necroscope series. Also, who would be dark enough to act in the film? I see you have all considered the various aspects of the film-making process, especially in regard to the actors who might be able to properly portray our beloved characters. Unfortunately, I dont think Holly wood is up to the task of researching the books and matching up actors to accurately represent on film the personalities we've been able to envision thanks to Brian Lumley's creativity. I wish there was some way to make this work, but unfortunately I dont think it could. The various aspects of this particular series of books simply cannot be captured on film, no matter how much we wish it could. In order to make a Necroscope movie, several things must be offered up for sacrifice: character depth, seriousness and believability of the work, the reputation of the writer (usually tarnished by bad movies made from good books), etc, etc. I'm very sorry, but, although part of me would love to see this as a blockbuster hit, still I must say that I would rather read and re-read the books time and again than sit through a Hollywood horror flick.

Having read this section i find that most people have viable reasons for and against a necroscope movie.
Having said this I believe that all movies before production are liable to go through the same process of pros and cons.
I personaly would like to see a trilogy of movies made and think it would do justice after all it is working for THE MATRIX which as a film did not have a fan base already established through litrature. But at the end of the day it is none of our concern it is BL's, so what does he think?
I also feel i could play a tremendous Radu Lycan.

Just to put my 2p worth in I would have to say that while I would love to see a movie made of the necroscope series it would probably end up being a disappointment, like so many other books made in to films. The film people {similar to the little people that live in the tv} can't get the atmosphere right.
