Last evening, driving home from camp, I caught a bit of the show "LOVE LINE" on my car radio. The featured guest was a popular horror writer/film maker who will remain nameless (most assuredly not our Master, and not that KING fellow). This gent sat in on the usual antics of the hosts which included degrading and insulting troubled young folk seeking advice on various personal/sexually oriented subjects. "CB"(as I will call this famous fellow) did expose his sexual preference and shared some details which I thought could be detrimental to his popularity in some circles. Let me be very clear in stating that I do not prejudge anything but prejudice itself, but all people do not think and feel alike. On the flipside of negative feelings of prejudice lies the Zealous Devotion to a person, ideal, or thing...which I think somewhat describes how we feel about our Master and his works. This is also the definition of a "CULT". Cult is a 4-letter word, often invoking prejudice itself. But that same definition can describe any number of sacred ideals: Religion, Marital Union, etc. To make a short story long, as I usually manage to do, my point is this:
The notion of making Mr Lumley's works into Movies scares me. A lucrative idea, but at what cost. This "CB" fellow has become caught up in his own hype and IMHO ...reckless where his career is concerned. Mr. Lumley is obviously superior to "the competition" by both his talent and virtue. He is our "Hero", our "Champion", and we will support whatever decision he makes concerning HIS works. My selfish side wishes for movies, but my maternal side wishes to "Protect" the Master from the cruel and crazy world of the film industry and all that that implies.
I hope that this little catharsis provokes rebuttal. I welcome your suggestions with enthusiasm ;)

Your thoughts on making Brian's books into films are valid and welcome - we all here have differing opinions on the subject and always welcome more voices...

Do you sense a 'however' coming on?

We aren't here to pass judgement (however couched) either each other or other authors.

But aside from that - welcome!

I used to think I wanted BL's books made into movies, but after seeing some other thoughts on it around here over the last few months, I don't think I do anymore.

It's not that I think it'll go to his head or turn him into some 'SuperAuthor' that can't be touched by the "little people." I just don't think it can be done right! Oh it might scare a bunch of people out there that are used to your typical "romantic" vampire, and it might even be a big hit. But I've yet to see a movie that fully meets the expectations of the true fans. The ones that read the books.

And what would they do if they could get it right? Which story would they tell? There are so many different ways it could be done, but the only way that would be good enough for me would be to perfectly and precisely make thirteen full blown three hour pictures. Think it can be done?

Me either...that's why I say 'vice'. smile.gif

But if an acceptable picture ever is made, I don't think Brian would do anything to make us grumble about. He seems to be a very humbled (while yet proud) man and writer...and you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

(No offense about that last comment, Sir!!) :D

What a can of worms opened, WHEW! Let me once again emphasize that I am not passing judgment(however couched), but I know how vicious the press and the public can be, esp. here in America. How many Politicians, Musicians, Actors, even Religious Figures have you seen go unscathed publically? It seems that the majority of the US prefer the influences of Jerry Springer, Howard Stern, WWF, and eat their young. I believe that if Jesus Christ were to return today, the media would misrepresent Him as well.
Agreeing with Nathan, could any film adequately/accurately tell the tales as they are written?
And...who would you like to see play certain roles? I vote for Christopher Lambert in some villainous role because of his seething accent and penetrating eyes.
Quid Pro Quo?

Ema,

Thank you for the welcome and for pointing me in the right direction! Perhaps it would behoove me to read more, and type less, eh?
