View Full Version : Demogorgon

I did suggest to Joeann to start a topic for this but thought I'd actually do it myself.

Demogorgon often gets overlooked in the vast quantity of Brian's work. Is this because people think it's not as good? If not, why not, and if it is why is it, and why do you think it isn't talked about as much as the other stuff?

Good one Silver! Demogorgon was actually the first Lumley book I ever read, been a while but I think a friend lent it to me and I bought the book right after I read it. House of Doors was next and then Necroscope series.

I think what got to me was when reading I really got immersed into the story due to the way Brian writes, plenty of good area description and believable characters that a reader in synch with Brian's imagination can wonder if it could be a story that could happen.

A book too that I agree on being perfect just as it is without a second, even though there is room at the end for a sequel.

Here's the other thread on Demogorgon I found. (http://www.brianlumley.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000615#000000)

EDIT: Mind blanking irrelevant..lol Due to Nathan pointing out an older thread I do believe I bought Demogorgon first (1991ish.. heh eh don't rightly recall most of the 80's or the early 90's but thats a whole 'nother ball game), lent it out, bought the book again and then Hod which I read and forgot about Demogorgon for a bit as I was heavy into reading Greek, Middle ages, etc books.

Yeah, it is the way he writes that draws you in, and without giving away any spoilers the twist at the end though not totally unexpected was brilliant!

I have never read Demogorgon mostly because I forget about it because it is rarely mentioned. I will put it on my to read list assuming I can find a copy.

Delirium is going to re-release it this year in a limited edition.
I'll probably read it again at that time. It's been years since I first read it.

I liked Demogorgon, I've read just about everything Lumley, and found that his way of story telling and detail to surroundings makes it hard not to love.(I agree with them who's said it before) I enjoyed Trace, but would have liked to know more about his Bothers. Without giving to much away I would have liked to see (and was waiting for) him to have a sister. Someone close to him if you know what I'm saying. ;)

Demogorgon is great! It - along with Khai - makes me want more stand-alone books from Brian...

:-P Well yeah, so whats your point Nathan? lol I did get the book first and it more than likely was me who did the lending out not the other way around!

I read so much that there are alot I am sure I have bought, never read and lent out. Regardless, Demogorgon is my fav and reading from a complete book, HoD was probably the catalyst (heh heh) that started the whole Lumley addiction :)

I was a traditionalist and read the Nec's first, then came either The Burrowers Beneath, Khai or Demogorgon, can't remember which but I loved them all!

I agree with Nathan too, it does make you want more stand alone books. The Necroscope series is so huge it kinda dwarfs everything else

Demogorgan and Khai are two of the best books I've read, truly brilliant and probably faves because there stand alone novels.
The last scene in the book is probably one of Brians greatest ever scenes, it's truly brilliant and proves he's and old devil at heart...

Link here for Demogorgon (http://www.brianlumley.com/books/other/other.html) leads to Amazon.com (click the Amazon Graphic and do a search for Demogorgon), and when I took a peek there were quite alot of them available, you just have to look and decide on where to get a copy from.

The links here on the site to the left shows books that also all have Amazon links to them so not too hard finding the book you want.

I read his pyscamonk series years ago & it was so long ago & before i read the necroscope series that i cant even remember what the story was about, that was how much the necroscope books had an effect on me, so can anyone give me a quick jist of how the story was? i need to get reminded to get my brain in gear! lol

The Psychomech series was brilliant, re-read it is my advice!

Very very briefly a soldier got caught in a bomb explosion making him blind while saving a very rich and influential German businessman's son. The German realised his psychic potential so encouraged him to explore it. He was dying and believed that he could reincarnate himself in the soldier so left him all his wealth, he also got him a very special guide dog. In the meantime someone was building a machine called psychomech, he believed it was for helping psychiatric patients but it could do much more...

hmm I loved Demogorgon couldn't put it down, I don't understand why it didn't really get as much publicity, probably because the necroscope is so huge it just overwhelms his other stuff.

must re-read it...

I tried to read Demogorgon while I was waiting on my Blood brothers novel to arrive in the mail. I don't know if it was because I was so immersed in the Necroscope saga, but I could'nt get into it.
I'm going to finish Bloodwar and E-Branch. Then, mosy likely I'll re read Demogorgon.

I love the psychomech trilogy too, it was the first I read after Necroscope probably because it was the most accessible to buy at the time (the internet being in it's infancy).

This was a similar situation to myself. I found this trilogy brilliant, especially Psychamok. Demogorgon though just didn't appeal to me the same, and I was slightly disappointed.

I read Demogorgon about six months ago. I found it really dark and suspenseful. I personally loved it. It was what made me look for other works by Brian, other than the Necroscope series. I'd have to re-read it again, but I am surprised it isn't talked about more. As for it being not one of his best works....I personally cannot say that anything I've read of Brian's was not great.

I think a lot of people get hung up on the Necroscope, and when they read something else of Brians it may not be what they expected. Not Necroscopish? Of course I think it's great myself, but Brians work is much more. Once I finally got online I wanted to find out more of what Brian had to offer, and I'm glad I did. I was happy to here of the new Necroscope book, but I would actually be happier to see something completely new. Oh sure you can work the Necroscope into many ways, the possabilities are endless, but a new full novel would be great. When was the last time? 98? House of doors 2? And even that wasn't exactly new. It was a Sequel.

Silver
November 26th, 2006, 01:51 PM
I think as the Necroscope series is so well known the majority of readers will have read this first, so naturally they will want to read the rest of that series before even thinking of anything else Brian might have written. Also as so much of Brian's work is unavailable in the shops it can make it very hard for some people to get hold of it, especially as not everyone has access to the internet.

That's my theory on why a lot of people may not have read it, though I've had my copy for about 9-10 years, but I was lucky enough to find it on the shelf of WH Smiths all those years ago!

Read this one years ago, kind of like a really really good episode of the what the twilight zone was rarely. No spoilers here though :)

Some of it set in Greek islands, if i remember rightly. I love Greece, the people the food ahhhhh ...

The new cover is nice, but I liked the old paperback one, more like The Demon from DC comics (which was good too, in it's own right).
