Hi, this is my first post on this message board, so bear with me. I used to post on the NG but it seems to have fallen to the spammers.
I was reading some of the posts on what people are reading now and it came to mind the first Brian Lumley book I read.
I was severely fed up having read just about everything by my other fave authors James Herbert and Clive Barker and was disappointed in Stephen Kings latest efforts, in my opinion everything went downhill after "IT".
I remember standing in John Menzies looking for something interesting and this book cover just jumped out at me, it was Necroscope and it was amazing, after reading the taster at the back I just had to have it. This is the one and only book I have ever picked because of the front cover.
I just wondered what it was that drove you all to read your first Brian Lumley, trivial I know but I am curious? http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hi Katie http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/smile.gif
Well what brought me to Brian Lumley Books was a friend who went on and on and on about this bad vampire dude called Lord Shaithis.
Infact he went on so much it put me off totally and I didn't read the whole first 5 books he gave me until several years later after moving to Canada. (I left the books in England)
It was the need of something to read that caused me to buy the first one from a recommendation several years old.. Needless to say IT WAS ACE!! I just went out and bought All I could get my little hands on and I haven't looked back since.
By the way WELCOME http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/smile.gif It's an ACE site this you'll enjoy it.

Hello Katie and welcome,
My introduction to Brian Lumley was basically the same. I saw the cover of Vampire World and was intrigued! I've been addicted to his books ever since.
Regards.

Thanks for the welcomes and replies. I do agree this site is ace, it has been in my favourites list for quite a while.
Brian may not seem to be the most well known author (their loss), but at least here he gets the recognition and devotion he deserves. http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/cool.gif
It would seem that one book is all it takes to get hooked, I have found that none of Brian's books that I have read so far have totally disappointed, a few minor spoilers maybe but nothing worth shouting about.
Finally a question. Are the Dreamland series of books still in print in the UK?

Hi Katie,
...and let me join my little 'hello' to the welcomes already extended!
I was introduced to the books by my MAN who insisted on reading excerpts to me and shouting phrases like "oh, wow" at 1 a.m. when I was trying to sleep ... no other author has done that with him so of COURSE my curiosity was piqued. Ummmm I also thought the cover was cool. http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/redface.gif
Can't wait to read Defilers now!
Cheers

PS I've no idea if Dreamlands is available; anyone know?

Hiya Katie! Nice to see new BLOOD in the Stack... http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/wink.gif
I was first recommended BL by my father... Blood Father! Now my shelves are full of just about all of his catalogue.
If you're looking for the Dreamlands books then Hero of Dreams is available through BOL.com and Mad Moon of Dreams is still available through Amazon.co.uk (a link on the BrianLumley.com home page) and BOL.com...
As for Ship of Dreams and Iced on Aran no, I'm afraid they're like Rocking Horse Sh... you get the idea... lol
But if you try Alibris (through BL's home page) they ought to point you in the right direction...
Again a HUGE welcome, hope to hear more from you soon...

Welcome Katie! http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
It had to be the cover. I was reading King and Barker also when I came across the Necroscope... back in '86 or '87 amd the cover looked so cool. Ten plus years later and going on 11 books I'm hooked.

Greetings Katie. House of Doors was the book that got me started...and it was the title. Just got through reading Maze of Worlds, the sequel. If you haven't read either..I do recommend them both!

Well, thanks for all the replies.
It certainly would seem that Brian chose well when he chose his illustrators. Personally I prefer the UK covers to the US versions.
Thanks Emaleth, yes I have read both of the House of Doors books, the first one I was lucky enough to buy from Silky and have autographed by Brian, this was a few years ago now, before the autograph pack. It's definately my pride and joy, I was actually loath to read the book, in case I damaged it.
They were both good books although I preferred the first one. I've also read the psychomek series, the Titus Crow books and a few short stories and don't forget the Necroscope series. The dreamland series, Dagons Bell and the other Cthulhu book being amongst the few I haven't read.
I am certainly looking forward to Defilers
I think I may have to do my first spot of purchasing on the Internet for the Dreamland series, up until now I've never quite trusted it's security. http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/eek.gif
I'll definately post again soon

Sorry Moth, Gettin yerself mixed up with a.n. other, but I'm sure your still a decent fella, "just with vampiric tendancies" http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I take it the other book thread your referring to is my prized House of Doors.
That, I'm afraid is priceless and unless Brian writes a book so awful and I'm put off for life (extremely doubtful, he could write a shopping list and I'd find it interesting)It will stay in my bookcase.
Thanks for all the info on the Dreamland Series I have though managed to arrange purchase from the Master's Lady and look forward to reading the elusive series

Katie- You mixed Moth up with me?!?!?! I mean just look at him... look at me... we're dif'rent as peanut butter & jelly. http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
To answer your question a PARROTHEAD listens to Jimmy Buffett music... all the time. He may not be very big outside the U.S. (I don't know, I've never been outside the U.S.), but he sings songs related to living like a beach bum.
Maybe you've heard of Margaritaville or Come Monday or Why don't We get Drunk & Screw. Probably his most popular songs.
His concerts are crazy... people bring hot tubs, blenders (for Margaritas), and barbeque grilles... and that's just for the party in the parking lot!!!
And we wear Hawiiaan Shirts, Grass Skirts and Straw hats.
Lotsa fun!

MikeC these concerts Sound ehh - fun, honest!
It does actually sound a bit mad, I can just imagine him doing a concert here in Glasgow. Everyone in the Scottish Exhibition Centre Car park with Bar-B-Q's and mixers, standing in the pi**ing rain, freezing to death listening to a guy singin about being on the beach.
I don't think it'll take off here, but still it sounds like a good laugh.
I'm sorry I mixed up you and Moth, peanut butter and jelly are definately different, peanut butter is sweet and jelly is, well sweet too. How could I http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/wink.gif

Rain doesn't stop us, but the cold might mean we'll stay in the hot tub instead of watching the show.

What turned me on to Lumley?
A friend of my brother's who was a big reader also knew I liked to read, so he gave me about a dozen books of his that he had already read, to me. One of them was Necroscope: Resurgence. The story sounded interesting but when I found out it was part of a series (and late in the series at that) I wanted to start at the beginning. So I read the first Necroscope and have been hooked on Lumley ever since.

Hi, folks. I'm new to this site, too.
I got into Necroscope one day when I had just finished Anne Rice's series, (she was on the third one at the time), so I wanted more vampire stories. Like yourself, I saw the cover and knew this was worth trying. Not just for the vampires, but also for the idea of someone who talks to dead people. This was in late '91 or early '92, and BL is still my favorite. I still like Anne Rice, but I no longer jump up and down and make an ass of myself in the bookstore when I see her new ones on the shelves. Lumley, on the other hand, makes me have that reaction every time.

Necroscope did it for me (so to speak)
I remember scanning along the shelves in what used to be Fagin's bookshop in Derby, when I saw this bloody great looking cover.
Read the blurb on the back.......'hmmm' I thought, 'might be alright....'
Needless to say, it was. 'Necroscope' has the somewhat dubious honour of being the first book I ever read to give me a real bona fide nightmare - 'Thibor's egg, Dragosani's neck....whaaaaaaa!' I remember waking up, thinking it had happened to ME. Scared me half to death http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Katie.
I got into BL in 1992. I wanted to get into a new author. I looked at the cover of Khai of Ancient Khem and read the back cover and the first two chapters in the shop. Hero, Crow, Garrison and Keogh soon followed. Also George Underwood, the cover artist, was in David Bowie's first band and was the guy who smacked him to give him his wonky eye so I knew I was in good company.
Finally BL's ENGLISH.

Jason of Khem has a good point.
It IS unusual IMHO to find decent horror these days that is 'set' in the UK...and I always like it better if the story is 'on my doorstep', so to speak.

My goodness, I haven't looked at this post in a long time. Look what I've been missing thanks for all the replies. It certainly seems that Lumley picked a winner when he chose George Underwood to illustrate his Necroscope novels, they helped to lead us to imho the best author ever.
Thanks Jason of Khem for the interesting fact on Mr Underwood, how infamous can you get.

Too be truthfully honest, what got me into reading his work is the fact that there was nothing in the horror/science fiction section that I hadn't read yet. And to make matters worse, I started with "Deadspeak", not knowing that there were any before. But now, I have all of them. Well, except "Defilers", "Avengers" and "The Lost Years" volumn 2.
By the way, has anyone seen the psychomech series? I haven't seen it anywhere.
