Hi everyone,
I've lurked about this forum for a few weeks now, and I've decided to remove myself from the shadows and reveal my evil intentions!!
Do you invite me in of your own free will?
I feel its only fair to let you know i'm watching... as I'm finding various threads on this forum compulsive reading (during my lunch hour) and would like to contribute in a small way. This thread is by way of a brief intro. and I hope will be enjoyed by those of you with more sanguine tastes... (pretty much everyone covered there)!!
I've been reading Mr Lumley's work for a good ten years now, but It's the short stories that I've been enjoying the most recently. I think the majority of the power of these stories, for me, is the edgy familiarity that I have when reading them. I live in what could be termed "Lumley country" (Short story-wise), up here on the wild and haggard North East coast of England. All forsaken mines, deserted pit-villages and Deep sea mischief up here you know!
I was wondering... What do you consider to be the greatest Lumley short story?
You can guess my entry into the short story stakes by my name. Think about it.
Apologies if this topic has been done to death (ha), but us newbies have a habit of asking the same question again and again...
And BTW does anyone know why he changed some of the mining villages names up here in his stories? Wondering aloud again.

My favorite by far had to be the story in fruiting..... the story where the rot takes over the small village on the coast
and at the end when he goes back to look at the town again even the old man has succumed to it
i have forgotten the names in point due to the fact that it was a book i had borrowed and then made to give back a short time later

The short story I enjoyed most has to be Necros (although I must say fruiting bodies was creepy enough too!). I Just like all the vampire related stuff (boy I'm a very sick person
). This story has a hell of a nice twist at the end.

I have yet to read the short stories. I am waiting to finish the Necroscope. I'm on blood brothers again and want to finish the Wamphyri Familiar Tree.
Watch posting to hasty or Lord Shadoewolf will send you to the provisioning. I found out the hard way. My wife informed me I was, I'm not sure if this is the right word but it means the same only in e-mailing (spamming).
I was lucky, but be careful.

I had to have a long think about this one as I like so many but I've settled on two as my pick of the crop - Dagon's Bell from Dagon's Bell and other discords and The House of the Temple from A Coven of Vampires.
I've also got to say that the Introduction to Dagon's Bell.. is probably the best i have seen in any book so far.
Cheers

<font color=440066>Favorite short story... it's got to be the Titus Crow short, Name and Number... It manages to blend BL's love of puzzles with a prose style reminicent of Conan Doyle.
Though just about all of his short stories are great fun, oh, and The Way Home seriously freaked me out the first time I read it... marvellous fun...

Welcome, so you've been spying have you?
Hmmm......very sneaky.
My favourite short story by B.Lumley would have to be "The Thin People". I will never look at a phone pole the same way again. I get the shivers just thinking about it!

BadM- Welcome, good first post!
Favorite short story (so far, I'm only half way through Fruiting Bodies and Other Fungi), but I liked The Man Who Felt Pain.
Vasagi- Fruiting Bodies is the title of the story you are thinking of, and that was an eerie story!!!!
This is my first reading of his short stories, but I like them all so far.

can I have Demogorgan as it is short and story like.... and only took a couple of hours to read?
Seriously though, my favourite (at this point in time) would have to be Lord of the Worms as that messed with me and reminded me of something, although I am not sure quite what exactly.
Bad 'M' nice to see you finally made it here! I was waiting for your arrival, I could sense a disturbance in the force (that must be wrong)

). But you just find that post for yourself because I don't want to point Shaithis in the right direction

VASAGI, DRACUL....
Congrats. Although you are not Wamphyri executive-class (yet), a step up the food chain is still just that. A warning to the wise (as I've just noticed I'm the only Thrall here). Don't try to bite me. I don't taste good...
TOPOL_SHEAP....
Nice to meet you in this incarnation. Thee and me go way back (heh) or way up North, or whatever! Thanks for the book. Great!! I told you I'd make it here eventually!
MIKE C and LUNA....
Thanks for the warm welcome, guys. It's always nice to meet like minds. Thanks for taking the time to make me feel more conformable amongst strangers. Luna..., "Sneaky"? moi? Conniving? Maybe. Machiavellian? Possibly, but never "Sneaky"...(LOL evilly).
Yep, this Mushroom just loves "Fruiting Bodies". Great metaphors for what's going on here in the N.E. Decay. Crikey, just thinking about that story gives me the creeps.
Also, I'd highly recommend "Return of the Deep ones" to anyone who has not taken the plunge short(ish) story wise. OK so it's not particularly short, but it is worth it's weight in snail-shells. A must for all you Garlic and lemon escargot freaks out there!
Garlic makes me nervous (garlic mushrooms). Shiver.........

Hi there BadMushroom... about changing the names of mining villages: I'm originally from Peterlee (and Sunderland too), so when I met Brian n February I asked him about that. Unfortunately I ended up pretty plastered, so I can't remember! DOH! If my memory returns, I'll let you know!

GOTH GIRL....
Try to remember, It's been bugging me for ages and I've not had the opportunity to talk to Mr Lumley himself...
Cheers! And very nice to meet you.

No Shaiths I probably wont be able to catch you as i will soon be loosing my main source for the computer world. I'm finished school today and will be leaving to work in Ottawa within the next 2.
Its the chase that matters. And if im chasing does that mean youre running. No I didnt think so, I wouldnt expect that from you, but i would expect you to lie down either. Someday you will make wamphyri, you know it and so do I. Damn you got a lot of postings.
