No answers ok then did not think that this was too hard a question but as a clue I might say that it sounds like someone who used to be a profiler for the fbi behavioural science unit.

Is it Mandy Patinkin's character from Criminal Minds? (Jason)The Gideon (spelling). And this is without looking at the books, so i'm probably wrong.
If i am right then it's my wife i will have to thank as she doesn't like (putting it mildly) any of Brian's works. I know i know i should try and get her to at least read.........Sorry going off on one there.

Sorry can't give you that one but you where close it's more of a lovecraft name but without the vowels.

edit. yes it is similiar to Mandy Patinkin's character name

edit again. sorry but meant to say that is is similiar rather than sounds like in my clue

I was going to post Roc but then decided against it - thought I was getting confused with an old Sinbad film or something like that where the character gets carried off by one!

I'll post a question soon...
