Board Info/ Site News

Just an update that i integrated the forums as well to have some "useful info" on each page and hopefully make your experience here at the site more enjoyable or easier to use. Again, If anyone has any suggestions on what they would like to see or - hell - if you don't like it at all and want it removed, let me know. Thanks and enjoy!

I still haven't gotten around to implementing a new look for the site - but I thought I would give everybody a bit of a change... I finally got around and put into use a CMS which integrates the Forum and your user control panel right into the front page. In case you had the forum set as a homepage - you might want to change that up now! If you set the home page of the site as your own home page, you'll have a nicer interface with more information right there - and when you want to dig deeper into the forums to explore - feel free! Just wanted to know if I can upload an avatar to show on posts, this is different to the user profile image isn't it??? If so-how is this done? If not-when can this be done? Also(just curious), how often is the comment(e.g.freshly bitten) changed? I'm still learning the ropes-thnx heaps for any advice & info re: forums and locked forums. My Blood Is Yours

Just to let everyone know, there are no new articles in this issue of NecroNews, unless you consider my intro a 'new' column. We did a "Best-of" issue this time around since scheduling conflicts prevented the normal deadlines from being met. I took all of the best (IMHO) April articles from 1998-2006 and compiled them into one issue, making a nice trip down memory lane for some of you who have been reading for a long time or for those new readers to catch up some good stuff we had in the past. Hope you guys enjoy it!

Need to apologize to everyone for the forum being down yesterday. At around 5:20 pm my time, the server the database is hosted on got upgraded and they had some trouble with it, but eventually got it resolved - right aroung 3am my time. Sheesh! But anywho - at least the site didn't go down, although some might argue the Forum is more important! Once again - sorry for the issue...

Just a heads up for everyone: I've noticed that if anyone changes anything to their bank accounts on PayPal, it automatically cancells any subscription payments you had. I am getting a lot of cancellations latley and am going through and updating the member accounts, so if you still wanted newsletter access and full board access and don't have it anymore, please know that I didn't take it away for no reason - it's just that when I get the notice from PayPal, I won't receive anymore payments until you sign up again for the subscription. If anyone has any questions regarding this problem, email me from the contact page or let me know in this discussion right here.

Just a quick note to let everyone know we're now runnig the latest version of vBulletin, 3.6.2, just released today. This release fixes some bugs and errors that were inherent in the last release. I don't think we had too many issues with anything, but hopefully now we won't have any! Thanks for dealing with the short break it took me to upgrade.

Just moved some things around today on the board and condensed some forums, so don't be alarmed if something looks out of place! I moved the 'Hey new People' forum into the Lumley Discussions category and opened it up to some minor off-topic. Be considerate though, I don't want it to get too far out of hand or I might have to batten it back down. I went ahead and transferred everything from the 'New Board testbed' into the 'New Board Tech' forum and wiped the testbed. No reason to have it now. Use the board and enjoy - it's staying! Just taking a second tonighht and catching up on some subscriptions that have been past due, or got cancelled by PayPal, or just never got reupped. if you happen to not have access to a certain area that you think you should, let me know and we'll try to get everything sorted. To help with the cleanup and transition of the board, I am going to be going through and deleting old members who have never posted. If you are over a year out and didn't make a post, then I am going to remove the profile. Chances are, you either forgot about the site, or forgot your username and signed up again under a different one, so it doesn't matter! If you are an Elite member and do not like your current username or have forgotten it, please reregister and inform me of your old name so that I can merge the two accounts. i will check the profiles against each other, so if they are too different, I will have you validate your request in some way before i do the update. Hopefully I can get through everyone quickly if this is a common request. Please don't request this on a whim as it will be very time-consuming for me. I will only do this for the Elite members. membership has it's rewards!

just a quick heads up to everyone out there that the board will be changing in the near future. I am working on the new scripts now, recently purchased from vBulletin, and will be tweaking them to get them where they need to be. There will be a test board most likely for a period of time while we tweak things to make sure all is running right before I move/import the current board into the new forum - thus creating the new Brian Lumley.com Community. Hope you are all looking forward to the changes... keep an eye out!

Getting the new board ready - there poses a question. Do we close the old board down and use it for archive purposes only - or do we import everything into the new board and keep on chugging along? Closing the old board down requires everyone to re-register, but it also allows for a fresh start if you have forgotten your password, want to upgrade your status, or want to have a new name that no one remembers you by. No worries on Elite status already purchased. Those accounts will be updated if we go with a reregister so everyone will have access to where they are supposed to. Any questions, we can find out after the poll with a regular discussion.

Just a quick note to let everyone know we have a new Moderator on the prowl - sdkdmd - and he rules with an iron fist - or so I've heard. He'll be manning the Hell-Land's Gate along with some of the other already known mods from the Board. I also added in some mods to some of the other newer forums that hadn't been messed with in awhile.

It was short notice so I didn't get to alert everyone, but when the hosting company (Radiant.net) offers to move over 250 megs of data for you and set all the permissions correctly - you let them. Just a quick note to let everyone know - we will be moving the site to a new server today or tomorrow and the site may be down. I am going to do my best to make sure all messages are kept and current, but if any of you remember a few years back when we did this, there was a bit of a delay in posting since the permissions needed reset, so please bear with me as I get this changeover done. This move is giving us more space and will also allow us to move to a new database driven board later in the year.

Okies, here's the situation. We now have a nice setup where we can have two MySQL databases with 100 MB storage each. The initial plan was to upgrade to Infopop's new product (which is now an upgrade to UBB.threads) when it comes out later in the year. but, their head develper decided to leave for no explainable reason, other than it has taken them over two years to develope this new software and it ends up being an upgrade to s product they alread have, and I might add a product not too many people are thrilled with, from what i can read in the forums over there. I have been updating access rights today and getting all of the past subscribers who have not paid their yearly fees current. Along with the recent server move, there will be a new change later this year in how we interact with each other. The Board will be upgraded to a MySQL database backend - for all the geeks out there that care. We've been using UBB almost from the start here and have faithfully upgraded with each new release which brought more features and better software along for the ride. For the last 2 years, Infopop, now Groupee, has been working on a new version of the Board software which was supposed to combine the best of ubb.classic (which we use) and threads, which is the database board. Just to let everyone know - i have finally gotten around to moving some topics to a newly created archive. Anything that hasn't been posted to in over a year from the Settlement and MediaSpire forums were moved to a newly renamed Archive - The History of the Aerie. if you are looking for anything and are having trouble finding it - well, try looking through the pages of history. I also condensed the forum so only the category shows on the main page. if you want to see the different archives inside that category you need to clcik on it to open up that section. Just a quick note to let everyone know - I have gone in and restored everyone's access to at least be a Basic member now. So - if you have signed up in the past, then you can post again in the free areas. But - if you have signed up in the past and never posted - or have signed up recently and never posted, I am going to remove the account after a set time period.
