I'd say the Conan type. Given his description, way of life and the background history you pick up on him in the books, he seems a big, hardy, stocky bloke from the Steppes, rather than a streak of water in a loincloth. Personally, I wouldn't base my image of characters on how they appear in book llustrations. Take for example, Titus Crow. In all the short stories and novels, he's described as having a leonine appearance with dark hair and a beard. On the cover of the UK edition of The Compleat Crow, that's a fair impression, but on the US cover, he looks like a lanky Father Xmas. Jason

Have to agree with you there Nathan. A brilliant read, I'd forgotten how good the book was. Fantastic story with all the biblical references linking in with the action scenes. I was in Rhodes in 92 so the good thing about this re-read is that it brings back memories of my holiday. Whizzing up and down the dusty mountain roads between Rhodes Town and Lindos on a clapped-out bike, the airport terminal that's the size of a garden shed, the bored-looking customs officials and best of all pints of lager for 50p.

Digging a bit deeper, Demogorgon is mentioned later in the book as Satan's familiar, his watchdog on Earth who takes on the form of lightning when bidded. This cleared up a few points for me as I couldn't understand at first who or what Demogorgon was or even if was just another name for Satan.

To all I sent an e-mail to Brian, Silky & Shadoe on Saturday in response to Brian's post on the Message Board. I received a reply on Sunday and Brian stated he wished I had posted it onto the board. Well since the Master requested it here goes: Dear Brian, Barbara Ann & Dave Just read the above post on the Message / Breaking News area. Thought I'd send a brief note (sic) to say thank you for your timely words from someone who isn't interested in turning all your hard work into a RPG site.(Perish the thought). Regarding the visitors to the Board, it is time to separate the wheat from the chaff. I must admit I have cut down on the number of posts r/e non-specific items & post now only in reference to your work. A majority of posts I reply to are from people new to the Board and your work who ask bout pre-NecroScope works. Through the Board, I have gained access to my favourite author, the newsletter and details of forthcoming publications etc and received items such as the Autograph pack and a tee-shirt from Dave. I have also managed to obtain five books that I thought I would never be in my collection, "Ghoul Warning", "The Caller of the Black", "Beneath the Moors" "The Horror at OakDeene" and "The Last Rite". I am a relatively new fan (eight years) yet I have managed to obtain the above rare books in the space of a few months to complete the set. It's been a long eight years to get all the books, but well worth it. I can still remember buying Khai in a Manchester book shop in 1992 and thinking "Who the bloody hell is this Brian Lumley, never heard of him before". I'm so glad I rectified that. Finally, some of the Brit fans have managed to meet up a few times this year, and especially with Scarlet/Layla and Lord Lich/Billy living near me in South Manchester, there's a few BL fans to socialise with, (although they'll be cribbing my earlier books left, right and centre). So even if The Whisperer is not published in the UK next year, check out your local branch for an imported book.
