Ultimately I haven't read Vampire Worlds right through yet, and so really perhaps are yet to see the most powerful of Lumley's saga unveiled (Though I have recently started up the first book...and near finished it rather quickly). And as I said earlier I sincerly agree that on a literary note that Lestat's massive powers and invulnerability lead to a severe problem with the stories. Yet as a simple observation of what each code of vampires are capable of I can not really see how Lestat's god like station could be overrun but the Whamphyri.... THOUGH I guess I should really ask what chance Lestat would have agaisnt...say a handful off Vampire Warriors? The other thing in defence of the Whampyri agaisnt Ricean vampires is the fact that Ricean vamps HAVE to sleep by daylight, they simply have no control over it. I am pretty sure one of the violently clever Whampryri could find away to exploit that, even if it meant creating a few fresh thralls for the job. But hey, it is all moot, just amusing conjecture from my point of view.

I wondered what everones thoughts would be about the timeframe this film should be shot it? While as I recall, the book itself is set early eighties (someone can confirm or deny this for me) do we think it should be shot with that in mind or simply shot in a modern setting? Not that many films are made in period of the 80's since it's a time not far passed and was not a period of great political upheaval or anything. The only one that comes immediatetly to mind is "The Wedding Singer" which is made as more or less parody of the period. I wondered though, in a more gothic setting, would it be workable to keep the tale in the eighties? I am not suggesting that, we see Harry dressed in "Miami Vice" colored suits, or change Dragosani into a Russian surfing necromancer or anything....but holding more to the technological contrainsts, motor cars that where popular then and yadayada... Also when something get's shot in period, it is usually done with much more reserved stylings from a direction point of view, which would sincerely fit my feeling that "Necroscope" to be effective she really be shot as mundane as possible, keeping it small and gothic rather than some grandiose spectacle... Yet I am certain most of you guys have read it more than I, was interested in your thoughts?

I think I'd likely spend a great deal of time trying to annoy the 'great majority'. And when I was not doing that, possibly contemplate more interesting ways to annoy them...

Ermmmm....I mean he is supposed to be Romanian....Vin, "The Rock"....not so Romanian....like...at all. I do like the idea of him be very bulky and intimadating physically but also making him a little less galmourous than those guys would fit I would think?

Being niether a "Fanboy" of any of the respective literary representations I still say it's a little odd to have the Whamphyri as such clear victors, especially over the Rician Vampires. I mean c'mon really Lestat is given enough power to transcend contintents by self-flight, move faster than sight can capture, bend a quarter onto itself by sheer strength, kill a whole room of people without lifting a finger and cause Vampires to spontaneously combust. On top of the fact it is alluded to that he is so physcially dense now it's unlikely that the vaunted gauntlets of the Whamphyri would be able to break his flesh. Doesn't reflect at all on quality of character though, and well making any character as strong as Lestat has become makes him less entertaining. The fact that on rare occasions the Lumlian vampires still have to fight for their survival (thinking specifically of Shaithis fighting the 2 bears in "Deadspawn" here) made them more interesting in that sense, and made there completely vicous over riding desire to survive all the more powerful. Speaking of Vampires in film that I found interesting, I really like Dafoe's "Max Shreck/Count Orlock" in Shadow of a Vampire, that creepy decadence and atrophied mind. I too really Like Dandridge from Fright Night and the Near Dark vampires (I'd love to comment on the Salems Lot vamps but I am pretty unfamilair with them).

Darcy was a great character, I think his death was the saddest in the books for mine. On top of having a really intriguing "power", one that really kept you wondering constantly how much protection it would afford him how far exactly could he push it, he also had a really strong sense of doing the right thing. I'd have loved to see his power pushed further, how far would he be able to ignore his gut instincts, the need to get the hell out before the power seemingly had to make minor miracles happen to keep him in the game. Of course by the end of the fifth book the description "possibly the words most non-descript man" started to grate a little....[ ]

Come now, given the levels of power Lestat has reached in the current Rice novels I think its a stretch to think even the powerful starside lords could best him. I think its a great and really unique mythos though. The Whampyri's desire to survive there territorial nature. The starside lords especially, there fleshcrafted Aeries there constant warring and mistrust, plus just the whole shape-shifting is kick ass.

Pretty much sums it up for me, but not just the surprise of that, I thought Faethor would get at him some how, but just how brilliantly his descent through vampirism was handled. He is turning evil, and your still on his side but you know how bad he's getting. Him shutting off Darcy's talent was a huge pinning moment, tricking him, betraying him yet still feelign somewhat vindicated. Knowing thatvery gesture means he is somewhat willing to kill his old friend rather then be beaten. Even when Darcy dies, insteading of feeling really guilty he instantly seeks out vengeance on the man that pulled the trigger, almost ignoring his own hand in it. Then after his child concubine dies, he doesn't even seem to mourn her loss for more than it takes him to dive into Karen's lust. I wish he had of gone the whole way down that spiral...

I'd go with the popular recognition of Faethor. He's "negotiations" with Harry well brilliant to read, the old dog just kept on pushing and prodding looking for every advantage he could gather even long lost to beyond dust. Yet he still accepted his destruction at the time with a kind of pathos that was entirely unseen by any of the other Whampyri. And well he did fall in love to at least some extent. He above all the other vamps, seemed to show no effort in being a fiend, he didn't go out of his way to be a monster. He was fiendish no doubt but not in the revelling way that the starside Whampyri and thibor were. His evil was more natural and concievable then theres.

I think Ridley Scott would do an excellent job, he seldom does anything but a great job with everything. I would hate to see Burton helm the stories in those early books, his vision is just to ....eccentric and I think these stories work better when the supernatural elements are less "in your face". As a less A-list suggestion I'd throw in Vincenzo Natali, he directed "Cube" and "Cypher". He has a very tight visually style and deals with strange and often disurbing things very naturally which I think suits the Necro-saga.

Well hello all... Recently just finished the "Necroscope" saga (just those first five books) and decided to have a look around and see if there was some quality rambling around the place. I've still got the "Vampire World" trilogy, so I am told I have some spectacular reading in store there. I look forwarded to reading what everyone here has had to say about the works, which really have carved a more interesting vampire mythos than I have read in a while.
