June 19, 200917 yr comment_39191 This thread is continued from the newcomers part of the forum. The following are quotes from the aforementioned thread: Dark Cyder: "I love the fact that Wamphyri history is somewhat cloudy. It lends a validity to the stories that it is not all cut and dried. What we refer to as fact is often ambiguous so why shouldn't fantasy be the same. Much of what Radu learns about the Ferenczys is equivocal: garnered from tortured Berbers and a dying Drakul amongst other dubious sources. It is chinese whispers. The one sure thing we can take from him is that Radu and Nonari came through the gate together, probably in 371AD. He was there after all. I'm less likely to believe Faethor's account as it is mostly hearsay passed down either from his egg-father or from an even less reliable source... and Faethor was the greatest of Wamphyri liars. Apart from Waldemar, his sister and their son are unaccounted for and thus could concievably have survived. Certainly if you Google "Ferenczy" it returns some 829,000 results. Some have survived: are they all descendents of the Szgany supplicants or are some surviving lords and ladies?" james1984: "Yes Radu heard all of this from other people he did not see any of it...but one account is almost accurate...Nonari's slave girl ululu i think her name was, she said she was freed when Nonari's place was invaded, but she had also seen Belos himself in person... Was this a lie to cover up Nonari's escape to make sure Radu did not find him or what? As for Faethor being a liar...what is the point of him lying about his own family...i thought the Wamphyri lied about everything else besides family, because it was either they hated them or actually obeyed their father etc etc etc...so why would he lie? Shadoe the more importamnt thing to ask is...Do we as readers believe in Vampires? I do believe in them... Can the Wamphyri exist...it is possible" Report
June 19, 200917 yr Author comment_39192 The slavegirl was Ulutu, IIRC. And she seemed to think that Belos and Nonari were different people. I'm not saying Faethor did lie about his family; just that he was a liar. Certainly it seems he was mistaken at the very least. If Nonari came through the Gate with Radu in 371AD then Belos could not have come through 100 years before Christ. Thus the whole of Faethor's story pre-371AD is called into question. Report
June 19, 200917 yr comment_39194 Well thats simple i think...what if Belos told Waldemar who then told Faethor that was the year he came through then Faethor would think he was telling the truth and not been told a lie... As for Nonari and Belos well what if Ulutu was in fact told to tell Radu that so he would believe that Nonari had died instead of changed his name...like he hypnotised her and then sent her on her way...This of course happened after his Villa was attacked The early Ferenczys were cowards, yet it seems they overcame this later...why were they such cowards? June 19, 200917 yr Author comment_39195 Well thats simple i think...what if Belos told Waldemar who then told Faethor that was the year he came through then Faethor would think he was telling the truth and not been told a lie... More likely some of the detail was lost in the telling IMHO and other things added that came from other sources. Either in confusion or bravado perhaps. It's a factor of oral history that stories get modified in the telling. As for Nonari and Belos well what if Ulutu was in fact told to tell Radu that so he would believe that Nonari had died instead of changed his name...like he hypnotised her and then sent her on her way...This of course happened after his Villa was attacked It's possible but not implicit in the text. Besides Nonari was noted more for his strength than for his mental skills. Ulutu seemed happy enough to be with Radu and genuinely frightened of Belos. Incidentally, as Onarius there is no mention of his club hand. Perhaps it was unfused at this point so that he could fit in to Roman society more easily. Or, to further speculate (I have no proof), maybe Onarius was Nonari's son. Report
June 19, 200917 yr comment_39196 Was he a coward like his forebearers? Okay...i just re-read the line about Onarius....his hand was fused togethor, like Nonari's... Ok...you said that Nonari was known for his strength i never read that anywhere, where was that said?...As for his nickname the Gross...was his entire body gross or was it just a nickname for his hand being fused togethor? And Nonari and Belos being different...Ulutu never seen her master die...we know Faethor was a necromancer, as was his two sons, a trait not passed on to Angelo or his twins sons, he had the telepathy and future sight... Somewhere down the line the Ferenczys had to learn Necromancy b/c Faethor learned it as well if I remember.... We don't know much about the early Ferenczy bloodline because its is never said much about them or their abilities...All we know is one Nonari swore a bloodoath against Radu when his father and uncle were killed... and Belos took over the bloodoath and passed it down father to son till Faethor...Thibor and Janos never knew about it... It is possible Nonari had great strenghth and mental abilities like hypnotism... As for Belos he looked like a Hawk and according to Ulutu was like a wild Stallion...Now if he was truly his egg-son the we know what happened to him, thats told but Bonnie-Jean Mirlu....She told when invaders tried to capture his castle he died, which they were killed by his son Waldemar,Same castle that went to Thibor... Radu thought that Nonari never died he just faked it and changed his name and his looks...if u want the page this is said then i can supply it... Edited June 19, 200917 yr by james1984 Report
June 22, 200917 yr Author comment_39207 Was he a coward like his forebearers? Is it cowardice or self-preservation? I reckon it's a subjective thing. In the same way I guess you could describe a hero like Harry a reckless fool. He had two chances at life and was killed both times while still quite young. It seems to me that the Ferenczys didn't always avoid conflict. They'd defend their territories until the odds weighed too heavily against them. Then they'd flee. That's one of the factors in the longevity of the Wamphyri in general, while reckless heroes perish. A thought: perhaps on these occasions it's the leech that calls the shots. Their enemies, like Radu, might consider them cowardly but they'd be biased. Report
June 22, 200917 yr Author comment_39208 Okay...i just re-read the line about Onarius....his hand was fused togethor, like Nonari's... My mistake. It's some time since I read it. Ok...you said that Nonari was known for his strength i never read that anywhere, where was that said?...As for his nickname the Gross...was his entire body gross or was it just a nickname for his hand being fused togethor? I assumed that he fused his hand into a club for fighting. By all accounts he was hardly a pantywaist. And Nonari and Belos being different...Ulutu never seen her master die... She saw Nonari and Belos together and was terrified of Belos but not so much of Nonari. It is possible Nonari had great strength and mental abilities like hypnotism... It is possible but as you wrote, it is not stated in the novel? As for Belos he looked like a Hawk and according to Ulutu was like a wild Stallion... "Excellent, Bill." "Bogus, Ted." Very different to Nonari then. Radu thought that Nonari never died he just faked it and changed his name and his looks. While it is possible, Radu may just have been paranoid. IIRC he felt very vulnerable trapped in his resin. Report
