This TV series, based on the 'Sookie Stackhouse' novels by Charlaine Harris, is due to be shown on TV in the UK soon (on FX, home of the excellent Dexter!)

US buddies (without any spoilers please!)... is it any good? Is it worth watching if you're a fan of the books (which ashamedly I am!), or is an appalling waste of time? I may give it a go, as I do like the books in a 'vampire lite' kinda way, but I have a suspicion it's going to be drivel! Although the gal playing Sookie ('Rogue' from the X-Men films) is quite cute!

Opinions anyone?

I've also read a couple of those books (I wouldn't say I was a fan, I don't own any of them but I did enjoy them) and am thinking it'll probably be a bit of a Buffy type show. You know small town, pretty young girl standing up for what she believes in, gets caught up in all sorts of dangerous adventurers with supernatural characters, friends and foes.

That's my preconception anyway!

The better half caught some episodes of it while traveling for work (free HBO in the hotel) and she didn't like it at all. She's read all the books and loves them and - this is according to her - the characters were all miscast and it just didn't follow the books well. She said they 'sexed it up' for tv. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion. lol Basically - if you're a fan of the books, you most likely won't like the show.

I have no opinion though as I haven't read the books or seen the show. Why did I post again? :)

  • 3 weeks later...

Is this on UK tv yet and can i see it on council telly as i don't have Sky or any of the other service providers for digital tv, only freeview.:(

Kenny, it started in the UK last week, but as far as I know only FX are showing it (on Sky). Maybe if it takes off the way Dexter did, it might get snapped up by some of the terrestrial/freeview channels. You might be able to download it somewhere, but I wouldn't know where, I'm crap at that sort of thing :)

Is this worth buying as a series on dvd? Due for release mid October.

Season One was on sale over here in the States for $40 so I took the plunge, even though my wife kept telling me it wasn't any good because of being miscast.

Funny thing was though - I start talking to her about the first three episodes and she rattles off all sorts of things that happen in the whole season. It obviously didn't bother her so much she didn't watch it. :) After three episodes, I would say go for it if you can find it at a good price. I can see myself re-watching it if the rest of the season goes like it started.

HORRAY, just seen a trailer for True Blood, starts here next Wednesday on Channel 4. Can't wait.

I've not seen the end of series one yet... I've accidentally read who the killer is, and I'm not bothered. It's a shame as I could have really liked it. I hate romantic vampires. Vamps shouldn't be nice, they are cold blooded killers.

I'll finish with series one and reassess where I am with all this.

Oh and the best thing about the show is the music over the credits at the beginning ;)

It started well, but haven't been so impressed with the last couple of episodes. I don't think they're particularly ghey, not more so than Buffy, but I just don't like some of the TV-invented plot lines. I know they're not going to stick exactly to the books, but the episode from a couple of weeks ago was entirely new, not a single plot line was from the books.

Buffy was no way gay, high kicking super charge frivolity maybe but never gay!

Well Zander as a pumped up commado dude was a little gay and Willow was an actual gay, but other than that no way was it!

Maybe Spikes jacket I always thought that was Gay I mean it didn't even fit properly, and he had BROS like hair which is defo gay!

Huh maybe it was a little gay after all!

Is this classed as off topic by the way, if so you know I'm truly home!
