Ok everyone, i know how everyone is so very excited to see the Necroscope in live action! Sounds GREAT! however i disagree(this is in MY OWN opinion) for the fact that the movie NEVER gives the BOOK justice! i mean Harry-Dragosani-Max batu- Sir Keenan Gormley - Alec Kyle......everyone in Master Lumley's Breath Taking Saga have impacted my life so much that i have to ask myself... Who has the Right....no the Privlage of taking any of these awsome and inspiring characters and binding them to a physical form? I have a mental image of what everyone looks like and i cannot bare to find that the "Actors" DO NOT GIVE THE CHARACTERS JUSTICE!

And this my friends is far scarier than any Wamphyri Lord!

please do not take this the wrong way.

but when people hear the name Harry Keogh i do not want them to think of some Actor who will never Ever even come close to the Necroscope we all know and love!

and THAT friends is my opinion

That's a very understandable opinion Strife, I too have a mental image of what the characters should look like, what their voices should sound like and how their manerisms should be, which I'm sure is totally different to yours and everyone else's.

I think many of us are concerned that it wil be ruined with Hollywood changing the storyline, hiring unconvincing or generally inappropriate actors and just genrally not being up to the job. However, what if they actually do a good job? I know it won't be exactly as you want it to be but what it it is close?

I'm certain to be dissapointed but am willing to take the risk and I'd rather it be made and I didn't like it because it wasn't true to the book than it not be made. If it's a successful movie (by successful I mean loved by the masses, not necessarily us) think of how much attention it will bring? There'll be much more interest in Necroscope and it might mean a whole new wave of people discovering and appreciating this amazing series, isn't that worth it?

If it was really bad you could always just re-read the books until your own imagined characters are back in your head!

Yes Silver, I see you've got a valid point. even if they DO manage to mess it up it shall not effect my mental images of the events that take place for Master Lumley has made it a point to describe Every single detail so that one may be able to fully grasp the events that take place.

so even if the movie does ruin it for many it will not effect my views on the story.

It hapened that way for me with I am Legend. I thought the way they'd changed the ending of the movie totally changed the entire theme and wasn't anywhere near as powerful as the original. That's only one of the things that disapointed me about that film!

I've lent that book to 2 people who enjoyed the film, and after reading the book said that they got exactly what I meant and agreed, and one of them still enjoyed the film aswell. They both read that book because of the film and wouldn't have gone near it otherwise.

I'm with you on this one, Silver.

Many years ago (1980?), I saw and enjoyed Kubrick's "The Shining" which led me to read the book. Although they were very different from each other, I found I could appreciate each as a separate entity and get pleasure from both. I've subsequently read most of Stephen King's novels. He's a great writer.

I might have to pick up a copy of I Am Legend. I loved "The Omega Man" with Charlton Heston and enjoyed the recent Will Smith version so it will have to go on my to-read list, I guess.

Is I am Legend the book about Vampires? I thought it was a virus? Or did i miss the point alltogether?!?! Also there is 2 alternate endings to I am Legend. Or either of those the book ending. I will have to read it im sure but i have another 10 necroscope books to read!! :-)

Also i think that even a mental image is better on screen. Equal to the fan art of the books. Its nice to look at every detail and see others interpratation on how wamphyri look, eat and behave. But yes it needs to be done correctly and sometimes hollywood gets it wrong.....

Let me quote

Amazon.co.uk

It seems strange to find a 1954 vampire novel in Millennium's "SF Masterworks" classic reprints series. I Am Legend, though, was a trailblazing and later much imitated story that reinvented the vampire myth as SF. Without losing the horror, it presents vampirism as a disease whose secrets can be unlocked by scientific tools. The hero Robert Neville, perhaps the last uninfected man on Earth, finds himself in a paranoid nightmare. By night, the bloodthirsty undead of small-town America besiege his barricaded house: their repeated cry "Come out, Neville!" is a famous SF catchphrase. By day, when they hide in shadow and become comatose, Neville gets out his wooden stakes for an orgy of slaughter. He also discovers pseudoscientific explanations, some rather strained, for vampires' fear of light, vulnerability to stakes though not bullets, loathing of garlic, and so on. What gives the story its uneasy power is the gradual perspective shift which shows that by fighting monsters Neville is himself becoming monstrous--not a vampire but something to terrify vampires and haunt their dreams as a dreadful legend from the bad old days. I Am Legend was altered out of recognition when filmed as The Omega Man (1971), starring Charlton Heston. Avoid the movie; read the book. --David Langford[/Quote]

I am Legend was an incredible book and absolute horrible movie... when compared to the book.....in my humble opinion.

Directors and producers take liberty to add their "vision" of the movie creation and should concentrate more on following the books more closely.

That being said..... Vampires are all the rage in USA right now with the Twilight series of movie, True Blood on HBO and now a new tv series Vampire Diaries.

If the movie came out now with the available special effects, I think it would be a success whether it followed the books closely or not.

But see the Vampire Diaries were good books. seen the premiere episode and it rocked it was better then i thought it would be...

As for The movie of his books well i can't say many movies were better then the books...Though i can say for sure and thats Interview...

I also thought the Langoliers was a bit better then the book...

I think i need to read this book. Sounds completely different to the film!!!

Thanks for the clarification!

Although it is a short novel it is a very good read and pretty dark for sci/fi if you are interested there was another film adaption of the book that went by the name of the last man on earth and starred Vincent Price and from what I hear it is faithful to the book but I've never managed to track it down.

Forget about the movies and read the book. The authors' name is Richard Matheson and you shouldn't have any trouble finding a copy...cheap.

Matheson also wrote the classics "Hell House" "The Shrinking Man" "A Stir of Echoes" among many other stories and screen plays that you should recognize from TV and movies.

Well of course that is probably the better option.

The movie is in the public domain and can be legally downloaded from:

The Internet Archive

and:

Public Domain Movie Torrents

There's plenty of other interesting downloads at these two sites.

I can't wait to see it tbh.I'll just remember to leave my thoughts on who I think should play who and how at the door, otherwise I'll be disappointed.

Just enjoy it for what it is I suppose its never gonna be whats in my head anyway and thats probably different to whats in yours as well......course it still has to be made....

Bring it on:)

Hmmm, the Necroscope series is one that's as visceral and imbued with such an aura of vampiric evil that I can't honestly see Hollywood doing it any justice.

I'd be loath to see Brian Lumley's greatest creation being butchered by some MTV influenced hack with a penchant for odd camera angles and illiterate one-liners. :(
