Although I'm about 23 years too late with this question, I'll ask anyway:

 

How does one pronounce "Wamphyri?"

 

I ask this because I know how I want to say it, but I must have a mental block about it and I keep reading and mentally pronouncing it as Wahm-feer-ee. I want to read and think it as Vahm-fi-ree, but I can't get it to stick in my mind.

 

Is there a universally accepted pronunciation?

I do not know of an agreed upon universal pronunciation, but I would think it would be 'Wham-free' or 'Vam-free'. At least that are the two ways my brain translates it

I assumed it was more of an accent in translation or dialect from the szagny

 

Wampire ( like a russain) wampire, wictor ( just using chekov as an example)

not believing they cant pronounce a W...or maybe the PH isnt as solid as an F

Eastern Europeans pronounce W's as V's, it's not s speeach impedmant it's just they have a different dialect, it's the same all over the world, the Welsh pronounce Llandudno as Clanduno as we all use language differently the world over!

Except Americans who just say things wrong, you can't claim words as your own if you've only been going 200 years dam it!

Ha ha, you're not in trouble - I just wanted to know! Now I understand, though of course you mean chips and crisps! (Actually, french fries are still french fries - there are different kinds of chips, but I'm sure you already know this!)

 

As for the wedding pics, as soon as they've finished doing the rounds of the family and I'll get some posted.

Being German, I would pronounce it VAM PEER EE. The ph would be sounded as a p only. Vampire in german is spelled wampir and pronounced VAMPEER. How Mr. Lumley wants it pronounced I do not know.

Ah so that's the intended version. Hm, nevertheless, I'll stick with "VAM PEER EE". I think it kind of suits eastern Europe.
