Popular enough with whom? If you want him to be mainstream I think you may have a long wait. My wife thinks he is way too graphic and scary. Other than her exemplary taste when it comes to choosing a spouse she is quite mainstream. She likes the Twilight series and Harry Potter, but she also likes some good books and authors as well.

If Lumley were more popular I would like him a little less fervently. If "everyone" likes something it's hard for me to enjoy. I'm sure there is a psychiatric explanation for this, but I think it just stems from the fact that in general I do not like people. Of course this may just be a crackpot theory by someone who believes that it is posible to fervently like something.

Being bland appeals to the taste of the majority and I don't think that Brian can be accused of that which means that he will continue to be an aquired taste but that doesn't mean I don't hope that people come to their senses. I myself am not a fan of the whole emo-pire(great description from one of our fellow Lumliarians) or urban gothic(except for the Simon Green nightside books)but that is because I just like good books.

Although to be fair there are some good authors writing mainstream novels however there are some who just suck(sorry Dean but you used to be interesting)

I would never want Brian to change his writing style and become watered down to suit the mainstream massses, but if he were more poplular you'd be much more likely to find his books on the shelves of Waterstones etc instead of having to search for books that are long out of print, making him more accessible to us.

Funny you should say this, i was in my local Waterstones at the weekend and in the Horror section, there was 4 Lovecraft books on the shelves, no sign of anything Lumley. There was a section floor to ceiling that was full of these Twilight type novels:mad:.

At least they still have lovecraft but I remember a time(1990's) when you go into a book shop and there would be tons of Lumley stuff. Ah the good old days when horror novels where called horror novels and there was no buffy inspired dark fantasy.

I remember those days too, there was a time when I would spend ages trying to decide which book to buy as there were plenty on the shelves but I could only afford one at a time. I don't mean just Necroscope either, I remember trying to decide if I should get Khai of Ancient Khem, Demogorgon or the Next Titus crow (this is before the Mythos Omnibus came out and the books were separate). I believe I went for Khai as it had more pages - my logic was get the biggest, it'll last longer!

Even then though he wasn't amazingly popular, I was still the only person I knew who was buying and reading these books or had ever even heard of Brian Lumley.

Just read all the Primal Lands and it was sublime. I was trying to convince my self that there was more, but no. Oh well, this is a good time to be thankful for what we have instead of lamenting what we do not.

Have to admit that Dreamland Series is one of my personal favorites outwith Necroscope, give it a go.

If you are going to read Necroscope start at the begining otherwise it will just mess with your head if you start in the middle of it. Necroscope I gives you the building blocks and a lot of the background to Harry and Co. as well as other more sinister characters:eek:

Actually I disagree a little, though it's certainly better if you start from the beginning withiout a doubt I know there are quite a few guys/girls in here who didn't do that and still loved the stories and that made them want to read the others.

I would say that you can probably get away with reading Nec 2 and 3 before it becomes too involved and you really won't get it.

If you have patience wait till you get Nec 1, if not I say get stuck in!

Well enjoy, saver every ghoulish moment.

I know, I remember the first read all those years ago I lost so much sleep because I just couldn't put it down! A friend of mine has recently finished his first read - he confessed to being late for work on a couple of occasions because he was still at home reading up to 5 minutes before he was due to start work!

a friend of mine and myself used to go to the pub and discuss nothing but Necroscope in the 90s,many is the happy night I fell home qouting Harry and Faethor, its funny your Faethor voice does improve and become more evil with each pint or drop...amazing really:D
