Just saw Nochnoy Dozor (Night Watch), got the DVD and decided to see/keep the Russian version with English subtitles which I tend to do with foreign films as dubbing (most times) is not very good and kinda takes away from a film imho.

 

Have to say I enjoyed it, also ordered the books by Sergei Lukyanenko too, although only 2 are available atm. It's an interesting twist on Vampires, Shapeshifters, Witches and the like. A Good vs Evil sort that have both sides, Light and Dark, keeping tabs on each other so that they don't break a truce that was made, lol they even have warrants out for someone who has accidently (or on purpose) killed another from the other side . Have to say though if you aren't a fan of foreign films and are expecting a 'Hollywood' type of movie you will be disappointed, but you will also be missing out on a good film (as many tend to do unfortunately) if you don't expand and watch other genres.

 

It's also a movie where you have to pay attention to what's going on too or you can get a bit lost. The storyline is interesting enough for me to order his books, as I mentioned above. Looking forward to reading the books.

The actions in the novels centers around a group of people referred to as the Others - human beings who tapped into the Gloom and gained incredible abilities. But the Gloom doesn't offer its gifts freely, feeding off the strength of those Others who enter it. If sufficiently weakened, they are consumed, never to return to the ordinary world. I've had this for months and not got round to watching it, but with 10 days off work over Xmas, I have time to watch lots of films (stockpiling DVDs at the moment, I have 34 films to watch so far, as well as Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, Peep Show series 3, Family Guy season 5, and King of the Hill season 4 and 5!)

 

And I agree with you... subbed is much better than dubbed! Dubs always seem to be completely hammed up and ruin the feel of a film completely. Subtitles are the way to go!

I did check out the Wiki on the film and there is alot of the book which isn't in, taken out, other stuff put in, etc. as is usual with films from books.. mainly to appease the US 'Hollywood' audience I reckon. I'll see if there isn't an original UK Night Watch too. Hmm, although not sure what region my Comp/DVD player can do.

 

Pity that we can't get the great foreign films as easily, and the ones we do get all torn up before they release them.

 

I hear though that Daywatch is even better, especially when you get the gist of the storyline from the first.

 

Oh heh ehh I am region 1. Hmm didn't find either on that site, and Amazon only has region 5 for Daywatch. Oh well, will just have to wait.

Red Sun DVD is great... it gets all the foreign releases before they're even shown at the cinema in most places! I got the sequel to Ong Bak (Tom Yum Goong, or Warrior King as it was renamed!) months before it was released at the cinema here.

 

It's especially great for Asian stuff... makes me glad I have a multi-region DVD player!

Ohh I have Warrior King too, if it's the same one we are both talking about, they made a sequel? Great fight scenes in that one!

I believe that there will be a third in the series and that given the sucess of the first two it will be filmed in english with a bigger budget. Hopefully they will keep the feel of the first two.

Just saw Da Vinci Code too. Hadn't read the book, but may just do that too. I liked it, it kept my interest to the end and did a good job on a conspiracy theory (lol had to look carefully at some paintings, albeit on the net!). 'Course this too comes from an agnostic who thinks the bible is only a good 'story' from the get-go. Heh heh God could very well be a woman!

Sometimes the worst actual movies are usually the best movies. Mars Attacks is one of them.

Saw Night Watch last night, thought it was possibly one of the worst films I've seen in ages, some really good effects etc but the premise and story were just stupid and childish.......thought whoever wrote it lacked any kind of genuine imagination and that it was just old story's and ideas thrown together and not very convincingly

I agree. When I first saw it others were praising it. I thought maybe I missed something, so I didn't make any comments.
