I know a lot of you have been reading the Titus Corw stuff recently, as as I plan to reread them in the near future, it seems like a good time to get some view and opinions on them.

 

I personally really like the titus crow shorts, but then I've always been a fan of the shorter stories.

 

Anyway, over to you guys.

I really enjoyed the three Titus Crow shorts in weird hero's and I am enjoying the larger crow books although they do tend to completely jump about which I find a little strange and is probably one of the reasons I can't seem to get through them as quickly as I would normally.

What I mean by them jumping around is that the Burrowers beneath was a kind of Holmes and Watson type of adventure then Transition just through me as it was like an episode of Doctor Who then the Clock of dreams went off on another tangent and now I'm reading spawn of the winds and it's completely different again and Titus Crow doesn't even seem to be in it, well so far anyway.

All in all I really like the Titus Crow books so far plus I can't wait for my copy of the complete Crow to arrive which is winging it's way to me from the states, it's supposed to be a pristine condition signed first edition that I got quite reasonably, I just hope that it is in good nick.

I'm from the school of George Peppard and the school's motto is I Love it When a Plan Comes Together (which is infinitely more refined than the BA Baracus School down the road whose motto is I Ain't Goijng On No Plane?)

Oh yes - I love it when a plan comes together - especially in tales like Name and Number, but also the Titus Creepy tales - Billy's Oak springs to mind...

I love the Titus Crow books, they have everything, heros, villans, aliens trying to take over the world etc.

 

I really like the short stories but I think my favourite of the series is Spawn of the Winds, even though there isn't much of the man himself in it. I can't explain why it's my favourite, I love all of them but this one shines that little bit brighter.

Thats the name of the game LP.... The best way is to read as many of the short stories first but still reckon my favorite is the novel The Burrowers Beneath -- a classic book IMHO... Then you can go and read the Grandaddy himself Mr Lovecraft....... One of my favorite stories of all time is The Strange case of Charles Dexter Ward -- Brilliant.

 

If you can get a copy of Caller in the Black.. that one is one I go back to time and again, although Coven of the Vampires is a great collection. So many books, Ebay is a good (but sometimes expensive) source. MYTHOS RULES!!!

if you're gonna visit HPL, my fave is definitely The Shadow over Innsmouth:) It rocks! Haven't read charlie in years, although I might do it again before moving onto something new...

Just finished Spawn of the winds, It were proper bo I tells thee, It was top class and I'm now on In the moons of Borea.

 

I read a HPL short(well I think it was a short but it may have just been an extract) the other day it was Nyrolathotep(sorry if this aint spelt right) the crawling cahos, it was a little weird and very very short but good all the same.

I'm only mentioning this as there is a movie of this short just being released and it's meant to be pretty good and true to the HPL origial.

My 2 fave Crow books are Burrowers and Transition, although the whole 6 book series combines a mixture of horror, sci-fi and fantasy.

 

I'd say the best introduction to HPL and 1st and 2nd generation Mythos authors would be Arkham House's finest book "Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos" published in 1969. Arkham editions and anniversary copies can be expensive, but it is available as a p/b re-print.

 

I've got the 1988 Grafton p/b copy and I think newer editions are now published by Harper Collins or Voyager.

 

Arkham House owner August Derleth was also a prolific author and I'd recommend his HPL collaboration "The Watchers Out Of Time". A lot of Derleth work has been re-printed by American publishers Carroll & Graf, Del Ray and Sholastic.

 

Also worth checking out are Arkham imprint Fedogan & Bremer collections "Tales of the Lovecraft Mythos" and "The New Lovecraft Circle".

Its ages since I've read some Derleth and indeed some HPL ... this thread is really whetting the olde appetite.

Just a quick question for any of you die hard collectors out there?

 

My copy of the Complete Crow arrived yesterday and I was wondering if I've gone and got a good deal, now I spoke to Tops about it on Saturday telling him that it was a signed 1st edition in good nick that I got for around £30 which he said was reasonable.

 

But I was wrong, it's actually a pristine condition deluxe edition No 119 of 300, signed by both Brian and the illustrator Stephen.E.Fabien (I think that's his name), it has a snazzy dust jacket and comes in a black box sort of slip case as well.

 

So I was wondering if any of you guy's thought whether I've got a good deal on it or not, or if it sounds like I paid the going price?

I've been collection the ganley "un-deluxe" editions when I have spare cash for a while now, I would say that £30 for the book you have is very reasonable as I have know people to pay more than £40 for a less than adequate version of what you have:)

 

IF you're interested in trying to workout what the market value is, take a look at http://www.abebooks.co.uk , it might be of use to you - don't spend too much time there or you may get sucked in

 

Hvaing looked at abe, they don't appear to have any deluxe editions, and the most expensive is £30, so I still stand by what I said

W Paul Ganley still sells new Delux Editions of his books on his ebay store.

 

The present cost for a delux edition is $40 plus shipping costs so you would be looking at paying about 35-40 quid all in.(he hasn't got this one for sale though).

 

You can get some Ganley editions from the Fantasy Centre for about £25.00 but again, this is one they don't have at present.

 

You may find someone who has bought this for £10 somewhere and another who may of paid £35-40. It depends on whats on offer at the time.

 

I would agree with Tops though, you probably paid a reasonable price for a superb book.

A year or so ago, we had a lumlian meeting at the fantasy centre in North London, where I bought The Compleat Khash Vol 1 & 2 and Iced on Aran, in the same format (Ganley, Deluxe slip case). I was quite lucky though because I got a good deal because I bought the 3 books + a hard back Necroscope (and because Brian was there)I think I paid £45-£50.00 for the 3 Ganleys

I reckon you've done okay LP ... I reckon for an 'out of print' £30-£45 is the going rate. As mentioned earlier you can check ebay and sometimes the amount varies by over £20 -- 'tis just your luck.

 

The only question is mate ... do you actually want to read a pristine deluxe copy .. or just have it for your collection?!?! then you'll have to try and pick it up in paperback .. which then means you'll have more than one copy... then you really will become a collector!
