2nd Time lucky. Saw ROTK today. The best film in the trilogy, You ain't seen nothing yet. Not going to say too much until more people have seen it. Highlights for me. Apart from the whole film. Gollum is near perfectly intergrated in the digital effects. Pelennor Fields, WOW! Shelob, Truly nasty. You can see on the screen where Jackson's loyalty lies. Sheer giant, stompy action, and shedloads of it in this film. Will be seeing it again. Criticism. The first hour build up is a tad on the slow side, but a minor quibble to what comes after. ACE!

I think there is a hell of a lot of extra scenes shot for this film which don't appear. The extended DVD should be stunning. I agree it's not perfect, but Jackson never said he was going to do straight transfer. I separate the films and the book into different camps. I'm just glad of the almost independent feel, away from Hollywood, aspect to the film. He's done a fantastic job of what people said was unfilmable.

obviously you can't include everything from the book into a film, I'm sure he had to cut loads of stuff that probably made him sad that he had to, but that's the just the way it is with films, no matter how good they are.
I don't want to say a bad thing about any of the films, because that's just nit picking, as no other director would have done a such a good a job and, as accuratley as possible as peter jackson did, and I'm not going to criticise him, as wooky said the lord of the rings was deemed un-filmable for years, and he did the impossible. Also after all no film is perfect.
I saw it tonight, and being old soppy bitch and crying at the end :( fantastic, I just wish there was more and it wasn't over. I need a hug... :(

I went to see it last night - I though it was hilarious - especially when people weren't sure when the end was... You could see them holding the arms of their seats ready to stood up - and it cartried on for another half-hour! When they clapped at the end I have a sneaking suspicion it was more to do with the film actually ending than it being a cracking film...
Oh - cliché-haters stay away as well...
Big battle was good though - Gandalf kicking some but was nice...
My main problem was constantly wondering where thge extra bit were going to go. I don't get on with Tolkein's prose-style and as a result can't be bothered to read the books - but you could feel jarring scenes, rushed dialogue, and hints at more that you know this time next year will be on the Special Edition DVD.
Oh - one more gripe about cinema goers... If you don't want to be in a room full of a few hundred other people all enjoying the same film, some with coughs, some with muted witty observations, some kidz, etc then don't go to the pictures - the most annoying thing is people going SUSH! Unless you're giving a running commentary in which case you should be shot.

Unless you're giving a running commentary in which case you should be shot. I don't like tolkien's style of writting either, that's why I prefer the films as it cut out the drivel. Usually I hate cliché's, but lord of the rings, well, I guess it was one of the first of its kind, and you kinda excuse it for that one, but I will refuse to watch and the read cast of that type of story though.
The only thing about cinema goers is, I hate it when I get the guy who has a bad cold even flu by the sounds of it, coming to the cinema and sniffing loudly and like a pig, all the way through it. timing it perfectly between the quiet bits, and shutting up at the loud bits. If he'd just tried to do it quieter and less frequently, maybe I wouldn't have wanted to kill him.lol
pybob guess you disliked the film a lot then? It's quite freaky that you mentioned cinema goers after my pig guy sitting right next to me last night.
Talking about sniffing allergy kicking in...

Cell phones. CELL PHONES!!!!!
Get a clue people and either turn them off or do not bring them.
I'd like to flog to death every person who's cell phone rings in a theater!
I mean really...... Why not change the ring to "I'm an inconsiderate ass and you may beat me now."

Hi Sophie. I had exactly the same guy. He comes in, sits down with the wife and kid, and then he starts. Mobile goes off, he then opens a huge jumbo bag of multi flavoured crisps. The ripping sound seems to carry on for at least ten minutes. He then sniffs back snot with a loud snort for the reminder of the film. Like you I was waiting for the battle scenes just to drown him out. I'm goin to get a small blowpipe with a nerve toxin tipped dart next time I go. Concealed in my palm I can then quickly cough in his direction. End of problem. Maybe I could market them to the major chains.

my friends and i, geeks all, had the argument about the deleted scenes. my go is that the cinema release is for the average, non-tolkien reading, movie goers and the four disc set is for buffs. when i saw fellowship, a guy at the urinal next to me actually looked at me and asked me if there was a book before there was a movie. i mean come on, even if you don't like tolkien everybody has heard of the hobbit and tlor. everybody must have seen the crap animated hobbit as a kid.most of the worl are illiterate, uneducated, and ignorant of the finer things in life. sorry, ab it miffed at stupid people with stupid questions. when i saw two towers, ilucked out. went to a crap cinema around 6 pm on a sunday. it was just my friend and me. we had the entire theater to ourselves. that's the way to see a film.

- SophieDidn't think it was that bad - I just don't wet my pants when I watch it... Scenes such as when Our'gormless got his sword and the camara did a slow pan up had me in stitches... And when the Elves are walking through the forest in procession my mind inserted the backing track... 'Young Man, there's no need to feel down; I said Young Man, pick yourself off the ground...'
I guess that was just me then...

Great Film .. that really is all I can say! The Lord of the Rings is a great book IMHO, I'm reading it again at the minute and if anything the films have given the written word even more clarity and focus. This was just so epic, the effects the scenary - great entertainment.
I loved it ... in no way has it undermined Tolkeins book and to be honest, most of the deleted scenes and characters (Bombadil etc) were not missed. Lots of weeping in the cinema, so reckon its really done its job ..BRAVO MR JACKSON - A Classic!!

If I had bad cold, the last place you would find me is at the cinema.
It so classic this guy was being a fucking neanderthal pig, he must of been about 35, and they were 4 boys of 13-14 years old sitting quietly and attentively watching the film right next to me, while their supposed pier acts like a caveman. Also he couldn't stay still throughout the entire film. If his phone had gone off to boot, there would have been blood...
hmmm nerve darts, now that would be very effective, certainly solve quite a few problems grin.gif
anyway... going to see it again with boyfriend early today, hope I don't fall asleep as I'm getting insomnia, christmas does this to me every year. but still looking forward to seeing it again smile.gif

I saw this today, and with LOTR being one of my favourite books, it had a hell of a lot to live up to.
It was absolutely fantastic. The cinema I was in was mostly devoid of idiots, although the guy next to me had to check his mobile phone about once every 30 seconds, which started to really annoy me, but I got through it as it wasn't ringing.
THere were a fair few people crying at the cinema afetrwards, I nearly cried at one point, but that's just the way of things. I want to see this film again already.
I'm not going to spoil it for you smile.gif Right, I'm going back to the tolkien camp, I need a propper fix now smile.gif The films are superb, but they are missing quite a bit of back story.
Later,

You know, in a way I sort of wish I hadn't read the trilogy so many times, or ever at all!
The adaption is so good I wish I could've enjoyed it as a movie without always knowing what comes next; without second guessing the finer points; without having to be the one to explain the finer points to others...
Peter Jackson is my hero.

N8,
I totally agree with you, but I've refused to let any of the finer points slip until the extended edition is available, and then if some f the more important bits of story are still missed I'll go into detail about these.
BTW, Having read the first couple of chapters in FOTR, I now realise just how much of a mamoth job Mr Jackson had in doing the trilogy.
RIght, I'm off as I have presents to open, and people to visit smile.gif

Have just seen the EE of The Two Towers. Was a pressie you see. I enjoyed this version so much more than the theatre release, although at the time I loved that as well. If the same great job is done on ROTK this time next year I will be a very happy wookie. As I said before, a stunning achievement irrespective of the liberties taken with the story. I thought the separation of Sam and Frodo by Gollum before shelob was a better narrative device than the book. Jackson has made some suspect changes but has also improved and made some definitive changes. The staircase scene in the Mines of Moria being one of them. I hope greed doesn't kick in now the films are finished and extended, extended editions are released, though I suspect that may happen.

Heard a nasty rumour that newline are balking at the price Weta are charging for extra fx in the Extended ROTK. Instead they're considering a cheapo american fx house to do the shots. Surely they've made enough money to keep the standards up to the end. Corporate bastards.

I dunno - there may be more reasons behind them wanting to go with somebody else... Outside of the big battles some of the VFX were bloody awful, where in the Fellowship the interaction between the hobbits and full-sized folks was outstanding in Return it was bloody awful - the mini-mes wouldn't have been more obvious if they had great big arrows above them!
And the army of the dead being made up of rejects from the Frighteners (yes, Peter Jackson in gentle comedy mode) crossed with mushy peas - it looked like the elephant wotsits were being attacked by the result of a giant's sneeze!
Using another small FX house could well bring back the freshness and awe people got when watching Fellowship. I'm sorry but it feels like WETA got lazy in Return (big battles exempted) and if they're asking for more money than before then maybe they should lose the contract.
There you are - rant over! tongue.gif
