I enjoyed Black House, it was that book and the fact Father Callaghan was coming back that made me start this DT series. I'm so glad I did. Must look at Insomnia with my new enlightened DT eyes. I must admit I wasn't a huge fan of Insomnia either. But it may be better now I know a little about the Crimson King.

Still with The Wheel of Time, book 5 at the moment, can't wait to get to book 10 as I bought it a while ago but wanted to refresh on the others before I read it, it's so hard not to just jump straight to a fresh unread book, but I'm managing so far!

... just finished Crisscross the new Repairman Jack book by F Paul Wilson - he never fails to impress me - always fresh and new this stuff.
Before that I finished Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson - a genre I wouldn't normally delve into, but a mate made me read it. Very very good. If you like the internet, and are wondering what it might become (in the loosest possible sense), and you haven't read this, then shame on you. Very cool book
Now I've started the Gunslinger by King. THe intro was pretty good... I have 3 more volumes of this to read so I might not be back for a while!

I have Song Of Susannah sitting on my shelf. Boy do I want to start it. Soon I hope. I'll post when I'm done with it. Only one more book then. I'm glad it'll be out before christmas. I'm itching to know what the town Thunderclap is like. I hate getting to the end of a series, a very bitter sweet feeling. Necroscope had the same effect. Whoever reads SOS try not too post too many spoilers. The newspaper reviewers have already given most of the twists away.
I'm also at the end of Matheson's I am Legend. Thanks for the recommendation Tops. I can see a lot of this book in Salems Lot, plus Alan Moore borrowed a fair wodge of the vampires anaerobic physiology when he put vampires into the comic Swamp Thing.

No, no, Tops, read away! I'm interested in the take of someone who's read these consecutively.
In my humble opinion as a twenty-year Dark Tower fan, the last two have not lived up to my expectations. Still good, but not epic as I'd envisioned from the first four. Book VII: The Dark Tower will have be pretty frickin' good or I'm callin' bulls**t on several different recent developments!
As for your Dad's tastes... you should've had him read The Source to start off! Plenty of fantasy and sci-fi in that one!

Legacies is great:) Conspiracies is better. Actually they get better with each book - not one bad one so far... not sure how the guy does it.
As for me, I'm about 2/3rds of the way through Wolves of the Calla, which is cracking reading... it also looks like my plan to read them all in one big read is going to pay off... Hmmm, is that about 3500-4000 pages in one sitting?
Next up will be Song of Susannah, which will be in a couple of weeks, and then I'll have the final book in my grasp (on 21st), so sometime in october I'll hopefully have finished, and have the time to read a Laymon someone recommended to me! Are the DT books really this good fellas????
I'll be hohest and say that I've never ever read a Stephen King book, he's just never appealed to me and so I've never bothered with him.
Thats probably just me being obstinate for no apparent reason but hey thats me, the reason I asked my orginal question is that over the last 6 months or so you lot and your continuos bleating about how terrific these books are has made me lift my blinkers and glance every so often over at the DT books in WHSmith's.
So should I buy them or would they be wasted on a non King fan???
Nathan
September 28th, 2004, 04:31 PM
Whether you like King's other stuff or not, you'll like the Dark Tower books. They're completely different from his norm. As a matter of fact, the end reminds me of the end of the original five Necroscope books!
Ka really is a wheel after all!!
Have you others who're reading this last DT book read Insomnia, Everything's Eventual (the short story, not the book), and Hearts in Atlantis? I only ask because three people from those respective books show back up to play a major role in DT7. I don't think you'll have had to read 'em to understand, but to fully understand, you probably should.
Insomnia isn't all that great a read, but the other two are most excellent...

I used to O/D a little on him a few years ago and read 3 or 4 back to back - then I'd get fed up of him. So every now and again I like to pick one of them up. I'm about 4 books from catching up with his annual releases. Wasn't sure if he was published in the USA or not.... thats ___ing good to hear that you can get his stuff! grin.gif

My first TP book was 'Hogfather' and I had brought it to work to read during break and lunch and LMAO while reading it.. heh heh folks thought I was a bit strange anyhoo.. laughing aloud at a book sure doesn't help! I went after reading when I still lived in MN and bought every book my used bookstore had.. which was 9 I believe at the time.
I should check out some here in Grand Rapids.. I'm sure there are a few of them around here. There is a module made by a fan for the game Neverwinter Nights that is just great.. has most all the characters and little bits (for the quests) from many of his books.
Into re-reading for the umpteenth time the Necroscope series at the moment, but methinks I need a bit of Pratchett very soon...

I started reading Prat-chett almost at the beginning of Discworld, with The Light Fantastic, and until Soul Music I was a huge fan... used to literally laugh out loud while reading. But since then I find it getting very repetitive... the last few I've read I find myself thinking "he did that joke in...", and it's totally ruined the whole series for me. Last one I bought for a long plane trip... I left it on the plane!
I don't think much of him as a person either. I met him a few times at signings, and he did the same goth joke at me each time... he wasn't as amused when I told him the joke was getting old!
But I walk past the Fantasy Centre every night, and they've got a tonne of second hand Prat-chett (no, not all from me!), so if people (Ema, Lupa, whoever!) list what they're missing I'll keep my eyes open.

Cheers Guys, but I do tend to get his books when there released so I'm upto date. Thanks for the offer anyway.....
I've been to one Pratchett signing - it was packed and he was rather brusque!

Just read 3 books by Koontz in quick succession and i do mean quick, it is just me or do his books seem really good at the start and give lots of ghostie horror but just realllllly drop off at the end.
i got really disappointed with the books as i thought they would be good but....
I'm starting Khai (again) 2nite, that will be a rockin good read!!!

Lightning, The Mask and Servants of the Twilight

Nathan
November 12th, 2004, 03:47 PM
Hey Tops... do give him another try. Shadowfires was originally released under the pen-name of Leigh Nichols. I think he was trying to appeal to a female audience with that one. No wonder you didn't like it!

Oh Tops, these books are brilliant. My favourite of the first 3 has been Consipiracies..... my bus journey into work on a morning seems mighty short when I'm reading these. Tension, great characters and brilliant stories.... dare I say that Repairman Jack is the best character since Harry Keogh??

I'm about 150 pages from the end of DTIV... other things have been getting the way lately.. but I'm trying to get at least 20pages a day out of the way... which is not the easiest thing in the world to do right now.
As for RMJ... well, I'll have a look at the other thread... Yes, there is an order to read them in, and they also fit in with another series of books, this was not FPW's original intention - it just happened!

it's gotta be frustrating getting through the whole DT series the way you did [at lease it seem like you got through it quick] and then get held up on the last one.
i'll have to give RMJ a look, if its not to extensive.

Take a look at the Tomb sdkdmd ....and see what you think.
I read some of his stuff years ago ...but earlier this year started on the other RMJ stuff and to be honest its been the best stuff I've read this year alongside The Dark Tower....

very frustrating. I hate it when this happens. But I am reading it, and enjoying it very much. When I've finished, it'll be time to go and buy a copy of MIdnight Mass by FPW as I need a vampire fix ;) Then hopefully on to Abarat 2, and then a very long sleep.
as for RMJ, do what Lupa says and read the Tomb, if you don't like that (I doubt that), then it's not worth reading the rest. RMJ isn't too extensive - when I was reading them the first time, I got through about 4 of 'em in about 3 weeks.
