Some of the words in The Necroscope series. I wonder if we are on the same page phonetically(sp?). So, pick a word from the series and include your phonetic pronunciation. Maybe we can come up with the "Lumlian Dictionary".

I'll start, and don't laugh!

Wamphyri: Wahm-FEAR-eye
Thibor: THEE-bohr

Here are two from the FAQ...

11. HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE WAMPHYRI:

"Vam" as in vampire -- "phyr" as in fear -- and "i" as in eek! Vam-fear-ee, with a hissed, slightly extended emphasis on the fear bit!

12. HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE KEOGH?

"Ke" as in key, and "ogh" as in oh. Key-oh.

As for Ferenczy: Fur-RENK-zee
As for Thibor: TIH (as in Tim)-bor
As for Faethor: FAY-thor
As for Szgany: Zuh-GAHN-ee
As for Shaitan: SHAI-tan
As for Shaithis: SHAY-thiss

Any others, shoot them my way, I'll try and help - but those are usually the main ones...

Any clue how to pronounce Zekintha Foener? (with the dots on the o that my computer wont let me do. Mean computer . . .)

At the last BL.com get-together in London (Bram Stoker 5) we talked a bit about pronounciations...

With some it's obvious that when it comes down to it's what you first heard in your head the first time you read a word/name - and that sticks...

For instance I used to go to school with a Keogh - he pronounced it Key-off, so when I read Necroscope for the first time that's how I pronounced it in my head, even though now I know BL pronounces it Key-oh.

As for Tiania - I always read it as if it has a macron (a horizontal line that indicates that you should emphasise a letter as in the S in serpent) over the first A and a breve (an upsidedown ^ that indicated you ought to shorten the sound of a letter as in the i in linen) over the second...

Tea - ah - nia

But I've had it wrong before and probably will again...

FYO: The double dot above the O in Föener is called a diaeresis, and in Academic English indicates that a vowel should be pronounced seperately from the one preceding it as in Naïve.

Can you tell I have too much time on my hands today? http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/tongue.gif

I allways though Keogh was pronounce Key-og, guess I was wrong, but I'll still think of it that way (first impression, and all that)

For Spaz, since no-one seemed to get back to him, I pronounced Zek's name as Zek-in-thea Fon-er, probably wrong, anyone care to correct?

Glad to know I got the pronunciation of wamphyri right.

Cheers!

Aye, Lord Redspawn, it's all about the enjoyment of the Master's works, and though I've spent a long time looking at some of the names (I'm talking Cthulhu stuff here) once I'd figured out for myself how I'd pronounce them I just carried on - revelling in his prose...

Oh, the thing about the diaeresis, what I said applies to English, Föener isn't, and neither is Möbius! Sorry about that - should've explained myself better - as usual I was on a tangent... http://www.brianlumley.com/ubb/tongue.gif
